This was sent to the Classic Rendezvous listserv. Alas, it was this past weekend:

I posted pictures and a brief report of the my blog-
http://bikeville.blogspot.com . The old bicycle swap meet is different
than the "new" bike swap meet held inside the velodrome. The old one
takes place in the field behind the velodrome and is a much more
traditional swap meet. Some out of state vendors arriving the night
before, and through the night with a lot of trading happening before
sunrise. It deals with a wider range of bicycles compared to the
velodrome swap, that caters to shops selling closeout parts/bikes and
private sellers bringing bikes within the last 10 years or so.

Amongst the large selection of Schwinns and Shelbys, there were
Paramounts, a Drysdale, claud Butler, and other CR worthy machines.

Man, I never even heard about that one... would have been worth going to.

I'm kicking myself for even saying the swap was later at the start of this thread. It is (duh) but I would have lked to be at this one too... I know the bikeville guy and may talk to him about this this weekend.

Yes, this is true. But you can join in on the fun by buying table space, even if you don't have anything to sell. That gets you in early.

Not to despair. The poster of this message and blog was exaggerating a bit, I think. He's the same that sent another message to CR applauding the recent Bike Jumble as having tons of parts. There's plenty of stuff that's older than 10 years, although there is also a good mix of modern gear. The commercial vendor area as you enter is occupied by LBS closeout stuff - from which you can get great deals on clothing, shoes, consumables, et al. The infield is occupied by the smaller used parts vendors. I'd say the bulk of the offerings are 80s - present, but you'll certainly find some nice stuff that predates 1980. It is mostly vintage lightweight, however, and MTB. Not many cruisers, middleweights, balloon tire, pre-war stuff, etc.

KonAaron Snake 10-06-09 12:34 PM

I did as advised and bought a table...it wasn;t that much more than the two admissions anyway....

My question is...the registration form said set up begins @ 7...which isn't much earlier than it opens anyway. I've heard people are making deals all night...how exactly does this work and where do I want to be situated? I'll probably bring a few things to sell, but if anyone wants some space....let me know. I bought one infield spot.

Thats the encouragement I needed! :)

How much is a table there? I'm gonna go as an average joe this year but next year might be a different story.

KonAaron Snake 10-06-09 12:51 PM

The table was $40 for one infield spot. I called up and spoke with a woman there, and she said that no one gets in before 7...6 for commercial dealers...and that camping is illegal. She also said that it's going to be enforced this year.

Translation...I'm probably going to go as a regular guy and cancel the table purchase.

Well, if anyone is interesting in splitting the cost, I'd be in for $20. I've only been twice, but I do remember seeing smoldering camp fires...actually, the last time I went, I think one of those smoldering fires drew a response from the local fire department, which may be part of the reason they'll be enforcing the camping ban.

That was two years ago - and set the plastic trash can ablaze as we were chatting with Citoyen du Monde.

If you want too find great deals, be there at 6:00 am with a powerful
flashlight. Just walk around the parking lot and check out what everybody
is bringing in while you are waiting to get in. You have nothing to loose, and
possibly, a LOT to gain.

By the time the gates open for the Public, you may already have found, and
bought what you needed.

Ask me how I know ;)

See, this is why we can't have nice things. ;)

its such a reasonable price for a table...If I were better prepared I'd go in on one in a second, but honestly I think I'd just want to go walk around and see everyone else's stuff

We had nothing to do with the fire, other than noticing a plastic trash barrel was smoldering in the corner of the parking lot.

Poguemahone 10-06-09 06:04 PM

Yay! Sold the Bianchi today. GF says I should use part of it to buy myself something nice... the other half goes into our vacation fund. $200 plus'll buy a nice frame ifn I see one at the swap...

JunkYardBike 10-07-09 06:10 AM

Still looking to share a space (though I did receive one kind offer for space, but I wouldn't get early admittance). Anyone interested? I'd probably also be willing to go 75/25 if you just want to get in early without selling anything (sorry, a full $40 just seems like too much for what I've got to sell, which isn't much).

What's the deadline for the $40/space rate? The registration form shows 10/10 noon, but that doesn't make any sense. Yeah, I could call, but that wouldn't bump this thread! :)

KonAaron Snake 10-07-09 07:38 AM

Junkyard...I'm waiting on a call to see if we can get three in on the table. I will keep you informed when I get an answer.

Zaphod Beeblebrox 10-07-09 07:58 AM

if not, just tell em you're two and you've got a third as a helper to carry stuff in. There's really hardly any way to tell.

JunkYard...I'm really considering your offer too. I scrounged around last night and I've got a bunch of wheels I want to sell and a table really might work out

Thanks. I broke down and called, and learned that a space can be purchased as late as Friday by phone at the regular rate.

Actually, they issue wrist bands, so depending on how organized and/or hawkish they are, I don't think they'd permit it.

You can do it. You can wake up at 6am, I know you can! I'd probably leave at 5am to see if there's any trading/selling in the parking lot, like JohnnyBee suggests.

jgedwa 10-07-09 08:40 AM

The gems will go fast. But, many of the great deals will happen down the stretch.

I try not to get worked up into a frenzy at these things. And instead pat myself on the back for having the eye to spot useful bits towards the end that the seller does not feel like reloading in the car.

That sounds like a very good point!
