The air quality index due to the California wildfires was around 200 last weekend and it kept me off the bike, but it didn't stop this guy I spotted when I was at the gas station.

When you see a bike "in the wild" that you used to own several years ago, it's pretty cool, especially when it's a vintage Trek 900 series. This former customer of mine sent me a Craig's email about a crankset I listed for sale. I didn't recognize his name. But when I saw that bike, it all came back. He only made a few changes to it. So glad to see him still riding it and keeping it in excellent shape. He's now building up another vintage Trek with Ishiwata.

I trust you scalded him for having mismatched rims and tires as well as not aligning the tire labels with the valve.

Tip of my hat to the lad or lass for braving the elements on that noble steed.

On my commute home today, I ran into a buddy and fellow teaching colleague, Calvin Trampleasure, who works at a nearby school. Calvin was an accomplished racer in the 70s and 80s. He was a multiple CA state champion, who raced professionally in the U.S. and Europe. He raced against a young Lemond, and was Berkeley Bicycle Club teammates with Bob Roll, Gavin Chilcott, and George Mount, among others. He was a riding a beautiful, orange classic repainted by Ed Litton in Velo Sport/BBC livery. He shared a neat story about the bike. He won the frame in the late 70s (1977?) at the Berkeley City Criterium, and then later ended up selling the frame to an acquaintance, who recently gifted the frame back to him, before he had it repainted and restored.

Sorry for the NDS photo. Sometime you got to make do when on the road in traffic.

Wild enough to qualify. Branding matches my '93; this ^^^^ one's a cooler color. And although it looks like it's in never-ridden condition, it's not all original. The RD and crankset are definitely upgrades, as are the brakes, it appears.

Also in a shop, this one about 30 years ago in Norfolk VA. I just came across the photo in an old album. Old at the time, this Miyata looks like a home-market bike that was probably brought stateside by a returning sailor.

Not so much in the wild as at a local swap meet yesterday, held at a local shop's parking lot.

This is a Jenkins, done by a local builder. At the time I was last working in a local shop--more than 30 years ago--Arthur was working at Xerox and starting to build frames. Don't know how many he made but this one looks pretty nice. This might be the same one that was on CL recently.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7d1aea911b.jpg

This Romani looks like the one that was on CL recently (and repeatedly) being sold by a former prez of the local bike club.

A nice Bianchi Eros.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...497210dfcc.jpg

Everything else was pretty mundane. I did not even look at prices, not having space for anything else.

"Apocalypse Ready" E Fat Bike

I'm trying to determine whether or not this configuration is purely organic in appearance (i.e. complete hand to mouth expediency and pragmatism) or intentional to make the bike look less theft worthy. Neverthless, pictures had to be taken. The pack mule in the background shares the same hitching post.

It’s not often I see a PX10 locked to a post. I’m hoping the original wheels are safe at home and switched for the sake of riding clinchers rather than gone due repeated use of this locking technique.

I was walking out of Safeway the other day, when I noticed a young gentleman, and more importantly, his bike. He was pleased at my enthusiasm; evidently I was the first to recognize his Miyata One Thousand for what it was. He's riding from Seattle to San Francisco.

I was out riding my 78 Raleigh pro when I spotted this early 70s Raleigh Competition. Thought I’d pose my bike next to it for a photo. Glad to see it’s still in service and putting miles on despite its rough appearance. This bike looks like a hard worker.

Surely he had more baggage with him somewhere?

I'm assuming he was staying in town for a day or two. Unless it's a credit card tour? I didn't ask, as he was on his way in.

Saw this at a very recent trip to a local bike coop. Birdsnest / tumbleweed front braking. The tailpipe is the Midas touch.
