105SC brake upgrade comedy

Thought I'd try and update a set of BR-1055 dual-pivot calipers with a set of Kool-Stop Dura Type pad holders and salmon inserts. I noticed that tightening things down was abnormally difficult, and that the pad holder still had play when the bolt was snugged tight. So, after stripping the bolt head entirely, I went back to measure the old pad's post diameter at 6.0mm, and the Dura Type post diameter at 6.5mm.

So, I take it that modern Shimano Dura Ace and Ultegra brake pad posts have increased in diameter by 0.5mm since the early-mid 90's? I was hoping to be able to run Salmon inserts - does Kool-Stop make other pads in the correct diameter?

I'm confused. If you used Dura Type holders shouldnt you have used the hardware that comes with them?

Can you just file out the slot on the brake arm?
