A New Trick

A New Trick
This might be “old hat” for a lot of you, but for me it was a new trick….
I was working on my ’73 Raleigh Super Course TT. (You may recall the one from this thread )
Anyway - the old steel crank and front DR were sorely in need of an upgrade, so I got a Shimano Ultregra crankset and a matching NOS DR. I fiddled with the crank until I finally tried a BB that fit, and then I installed the NOS Ultegra DR.
Only THEN did I realize these new-fangled front DR’s do not have an integral cable stop like the old-fangled jobs do. “Golly Gee!” I said, “This is not going to work!”
I'll admit that I did not actually say “Golly Gee”, and I really did not want to spend another dime on eBay.
- But then I had an epiphany:
“I’ve got a double cable stop in my junk bin” and I installed it just above the BB shell, as you can see in the picture below.
- It works like a charm, and it (almost) looks like it belongs (though a single cable stop would look even better).
I know the purists won't like it, but it's something to consider if you need (or want) to install a new front DR on an older bike.

in a similar case, LBS guys suggested that I use a rivet nut and a single dura ace down tube barrel adjuster.
Pic will follow later tonite when I get home.
PS. It took me a while to get the rivet nut in, I broke about 7 bolts before the rivet nut finally sat properly in the hole.

You could have routed the housing under the bottom bracket, up between the chainstays & ended it an inch or so above the chainstay bridge. This generally works fine. The housing tends to stay put I guess because the friction between the BB and the sheathing is greater than between the cable and the housing.

When I needed to do the same thing, I just drilled a hole in the bottom of the bb and installed a hard plastic cable routing guide. The screw was self tapping, so it was no big deal.
I like the clamp idea though as there is no drilling involved, and I have a crap-load of these clamps.

I can't say that I have ever done that, but I do take "creative" measures of my own from time to time

From: My response would have been something along the lines of: "Does your bike have computer controlled suspension? Then shut your piehole, this baby is from the future!"

I had to do the same thing on the vintage Record FD on my Schwinn Super Sport. I found a Campy one cable stop but had to turn it 90 degrees out of sync to make it work.

On my tandem with it's quad brakes I had to add all sorts of extra stops. In this case I used four of these "Problem Solvers" which are sort of ugly but get the job done.

I have a Sachs top-pull triple front derailleur, braze-on (use a clamp adapter), if you're looking for a proper solution...and if you live in Camp Hill and work in Mt. Laurel, you probably drive within a stone's throw of where I live on your way to/from.
