Toronto's a big bike town. Also a big bike theft town...
One of the reasons I've moved over to old 3 speeds, nobody pays too much attention to them other than
like minded enthusiasts.

I also posted this one in the "Finds" thread but thought it should be mentioned here specifically. This is a ladies' 23" frame. They're pretty rare and I already have one, so I really do not need this one even at this price. The ad has been up for several days. I might just need to respond.

All of these attributes are true Boston and New York, too. In recent years, crime has gone way down in most US cities, especially in New York. But bike crime has not gone down. It infuriates me. When these dolts can't steal a bike, they cannibalize it. I see it all over. I had a fine bike stolen from me a year and a half ago. A friend did only a month ago.

And yes, the 3-speeds are never touched. It actually amuses me. The value of these bikes isn't really that low. A 3-speed in good condition can get $400, sometimes more. They are immensely durable and reliable, but the bad guys just don't care.

Lucky for me, I don't need to lock a bike up for hours at a time. If I did, I might use a 3-speed.

Folks, I would like to announce that our biggest hero of English three-speeds was born, not surprisingly, in 1965, and he turns 50 on Saturday, October 24. What can we all do to honor him? Oops, sorry; he's Canadian. So what can we do to honour him?

When we kids in the 60's my mom would bake a birthday cake and put coins in it. Pennies, nickles, dimes and one lucky quarter. I think they were wrapped in wax paper. So, perhaps a cake with various small S/A parts hidden inside... cogs, indicator pins and one lucky Fulcrum stop (metal of course)

Hoist a pint of Lablatt's Blue? Or maybe a Molson? Better yet! Ride your 3 speed to the pub, then hoist a pint!

To Sixtyfiver - I will hoist a pint to your honour, but with Canadian beer (both Labatts and Molson are owned by foreigners...so it will be a Wellington Arkell Best Bitter right from the cask.

I think I teared up a little...

As a bunch of us celebrate birthdays in the next few days we are going to go for a ride on Saturday, with the cooler weather a little whiskey will be the drink of choice... anyone in the neighbourhood is welcome to join us on what will be some epic random-ness.

Most of the more common beers seemed to be owned by on of the big boys. FWIW my beers of choice are local craft brews or something from New Belgium Brewery. I suppose we could drink the toast with a Canadian Whiskey.

Regardless; HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIXTYFIVER!!!

I don't think I can make it, not being nearby and all that. Have fun!

The problem is that they are in here
and to get at any of the 3-Speed bikes, besides my daily ride, I probably have to remove 5 to 10 bikes

The picture only shows about 1/3 of my collection

I'm excited to report that @gugie is working away doing surgery to my Raleigh twenty! Initially going to move the brake mounting plate down in the back, but instead decided to go in a different direction. Maybe he will post some progress pictures (I've seen them and it's good). Also adding some rear rack eyelet things (they look like metal tubes with threading inside each end - what are these called?) on the seat stays. Also asked him to remove the chain guard mounting piece.

I have Tektro 559 brakes on the front, but rear wouldn't fit. You know, this will mean that new paint may be in this Raleigh's future.

I am Shiva the Destroyer...

Velocivixen completely rebuilt this bike. She's an expert wheelbuilder, and laced up some cool V-section rims after completely overhauling the Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub. I worked at a bike shop for several years in my youth and never tried to service a 3-speed hub! I've got a torch, she doesn't, or you bet your sweet bippy she'd figure out how to do this herself.

I thought the rear brake bridge plate was brazed on, but I heated it up and it wouldn't budge. I ground off some paint and saw that this arc welded on. No problem, just carefully maneuver my grinder with a cut off wheel and remove little bits at a time until a tap of the hammer on one side, then the other and it was off. Please note that no seat stays were harmed during this operation.

After a dry fit of the new brake bridge position, I noticed that there was only about 10mm of clearance between the bridge and the tire with the brake pads on the Tektro's all the way down.

A few e-mails back and forth and we decided to try a curved, tubular brake bridge. I have various sizes of CrMo tubing in stock, I'll work on that tomorrow a bit. Unfortunately I found out today that my acetylene tank gauge is now on "E", no one's open on the weekend for a bottle exchange, so it'll have to wait until Monday at the earliest.

More pics, and video of sparks flying, click here
