Bad BF Search Function
When I click on "Find Threads I've Started" I get "Sorry - No Matches". What's up with that?

Left click on your name on the left of the screen. Choose view forum posts, and you will get every one of them.
The search function on this forum is not very useful. I just use google instead for general/topical searches.

Thanks, Bill. I've no problem finding ALL posts. I'm looking particularly for the one's I started. No dice, on that. I can't even get Tom Stormcrowe to respond with help.

There are to 'search' buttons. There's one just below the searcj box at the right end of the dark blue bar. Do NOT use that one.
Once in the sub forum like classic&vintage you'll see a 'search forum' button just below all the page numbers. Click that button then advanced search. From there click 'threads started by' and then enter the users name.
search forum<advanced search<user name<switch find posts by user to find threads started by user

There is no way I can get the "threads started by user" search to work -
When I do get an answer set, it's egregiously WRONG - see the results below - I have NEVER participated in most of the forums listed, much less started threads there.

The search function on BF is legendary for having been ported from Bizarro-World. You would think that along with the wonderful interface overhaul that nobody asked for, someone might have looked into Search; but I guess that's the ironic cherry on the BF sundae. Of course, by posting this, I'm taunting the mods to close this thread.
Use Google, and add site:bikeforums.net. Of course, that doesn't help to find all of a member's threads.

Personally, I would like to commend the mods/administrators for taking such bold action as they did in doing the complete overhaul of BF's - even though we never asked for it...
It was far more than a simple facelift I am sure, and it was an excellent improvement for their users.
The few things that don't work however, always tend to overshadow the many that do, so they really ought to hold the developer's feet to the fire to fix the search function.
But again, I do want to stress that their overall approach, and the look and feel, is far superior to that of other internet forums: I think it is reflective of the quality of its content, and of the many good people who play here. Kudos.

I dont want you to take it the worng way but your seraching wrong. You have to use the 'adavnced search' function which is located within the 'search forum' box. Do NOT use the generic search box .

Using the other button though gave me the garbage illustrated above.

If you key word search be sure to wrap the key word in quotes "dura ace" not dura ace with no quotes.

1) the mods/admins had little to no say in the upgrade. Just want to remind everyone of that. It was needed due to technical issues we were having with the old software, unfortunately the alternative to stay on the old system would have likely resulted in more pain than getting on vB4 in it's early stages has been.
2) Yes the Search functionality is difficult and often results in less than complete or correct results. Yes, searching for "threads I have started" or "all posts by memeber" should be the simplest types of searches to get right - but the devil is often in the details as they say and there's probably a very very complex reason why a simple thing like that doesn't work. They don't let me dig under the hood of the software or database so I can only speculate.

To be clear, I didn't start this thread to complain, I really am just looking for some way to get what I need from the present system. A "work- around", so to speak.
MiamiJim, I tried your way to get my "threads I started" and my single result was THIS THREAD. LOLOL! I must be doing it wrong. Anyway, thanks for the help.

Its not specific to BF, its any forum running vBulletin 4.0
You need to b*tch to these people www.vbulletin.com, they're the ones responsible (and the ones who'll eventually fix it)

I respect Tom for putting up with what he has done, and for taking the responsibility to be the primary point of contact for us users, attempting to make us happy. But he was handed a bad set of goods. The look and feel refinements were implemented after the switch was thrown, so fine, that represents good work. But I feel it's better to give kudos for having used good judgement in deciding to make a change rather than in heroically fixing that which never needed to be changed.
In industry, one way to become a hero is to mess something up then show how good you are by making it good. Not to show a good decision process in prioritizing what is to be changed and what is not worth changing, or too risky to mess with.
Search, and my issue, will get fixed when the next Millenium comes.
I am sick of talking about it, but I will not agree even tacitly that it was a job well done.

Hi Road fan -
Take heart about the search function - The back door method (as mamijim showed me above) works OK - so i very much doubt that the thing is so broken as this code could not be recycled to work elsewhere. Anyway I think there is cause for more optimism.
There is always a substantial risk when you change anything in systems: Risk is risk, but the certainty is that your systems will degrade and atrophy when you change nothing.
That's why migrations are a way of life in the IT world: That is unfortunate in a way - but credit is due when these events are used as opportunities to improve the user experience, as was done here (with exception as previously noted).
