Maybe Botto is just a name, that represents 30 people working shifts around the clock. Maybe time moves slower for him and he is able to accomplish more than an average person.

mickey85 05-07-10 06:35 AM

For some reason, every time I see "botto" I think "blotto"

KonAaron Snake 05-07-10 06:47 AM

I have no idea who that person is, but the name makes me think of the awful Styx song...and for that, I already support a permanent ban.

If I have to suffer, so do the rest of you:

Domo Arigato
Mr. Roboto
Domo Arigato
Mr. Roboto

lotek 05-07-10 06:47 AM

and the point of THIS thread is???

mickey85 05-07-10 06:52 AM

There has to be a point?

BigPolishJimmy 05-07-10 07:14 AM

I thought in C&V we were allowed to ramble on without a destination in mind

The Golden Boy 05-07-10 07:22 AM

Minus.

It is how I ride most of the time.

I agree, the moderation on this forum is great. They seem let things develop to a point and usually give a gentle reminder when things heat up.

I cannot believe that a thread about a thread got this many responses!

+1...the moderators here do an amazing job of mixing tolerance with firmness. They correct sincere errors in a friendly manner and treat people with respect. This is easily the best run forum I've come across.

Well, nobody really answered the question, but I thought it was one of the more amusing Rivendell threads. It was locked and disappeared after a couple people began questioning each other's sexual orientation. That's what's great about Rivendell threads; you never know where they are going and this thread is proof that they never, ever, ever end.
I'm ordering a Bombadil before the Tolkein family sues the name out of existence.

Elementary my dear Marty! The whole of the Lord of the Rings saga is rife with emotion, intrigue, plot twists, and the chance of the destruction of all human life by the evil eye powers of Sauron. The battle is all about Good vs. Evil, or the very core of what it means to be human.

Now, jump over to Rivendell bikes and the creator, the infamous GP. Is he really the good wizard encouraging the hobbits (C&V aficionados) to destroy the evil ring (i.e. unobtanium (anyone notice how Avatar stole our word for CF and Titanium?) frames)? Yet GP spaces his bikes to modern specifications, promotes unsafe helmet practices, and tries to tell those of us who like to ride in spandex, we are evil. His opinions come across as a sort of The Really Annoying Bike Gospel According of Grant.

So we C&Vers find ourselves in a predicament. We like what GP does with his bikes and products, we just don't like being told what to do, i.e. helmets are not necessary, spandex is evil, and only Pine Tar soap should be used for cleaning.

This is why long pointless discussions about Rivendell and GP are so much fun. It's where mythical epic fiction--- and truth is stranger than fiction--- nicely collide!

I've been in C&V too long - I see "basso."

While it's tempting to pile on GP for all his wacky ideas ...... if we look in the mirror . . . . we all have ideas considered wacky by someone. Even the thought of this discussion about one person the way it's done here would be considered psychotic by those outside of the cycling world.

We say it's fun to make fun of him/them, but it's oozing with sacarsm, jealousy and discontentment. I don't like many of Rivendell's ideas and business practices , but it's my problem. I have a choice to buy anything from them, or even give them another consideration in thought.

The packaging, IMO, is a big part of the rub. Actually, to extend the biblical analogy, it is also presented as unquestionable Mosaic Law. Additionally, a little bit of his elegaic and world-weary writing style goes a long way with me.

DISCLAIMER: Just because I say GP (or anyone else) is irritating does not mean that I believe that I am not irritating or anything - I happily dwell in a glass house with an expansive peanut gallery. Or, perhaps were I a Japanese guy with limited command of english:

To those who respectfully disagree
I cordially extend my offer
To them the soothing caress
Of a welcoming Canadian Club

Let me see if I have this right; you start a thread asking what happened to a thread that was deleted for having so much conflict and kvetching. You wait for some fighting on the resurrection of the thread...and than you criticize people for being too harsh on GP. It looks to me like you just wanted to continue exactly where the old thread left off so you could share your point of view on GP, which includes calling those who criticized him psychotic.

Do you see the problem here? :deadhorse:

Don't twist my words, please....but I respect your right to do so.

If I had wanted a continuation of where the first one ended, I would have stated so. I didn't see where in the original thread it got all awry... or know that it had done so. I don't know what happened to the thread, hence, my question.

I believe I was only critical of myself. I'm as guilty as anyone for piling on .... but there comes a point when I see what I'm doing. How crazy it is. How harmful it is. I don't need more of it.

Chicago Al 05-07-10 09:12 AM

I hope this thread doesn't go the way of the other one...wait, I mean I hope it DOES keep going like the other but does NOT get deleted. I'm cracking up at some of the posts, esp Robatsu's. It even inspired me to this not quite haiku (lacks a mention of the season):

thread on Rivendell
kumbaya bikes, heated words
moderators ax

lotek 05-07-10 09:16 AM

What happened to the thread?
I'll tell you. That thread garnered 5 or 6 reports all within a few minutes. While we (mods/admins) generally try to let things work themselves out here (C&V) this one required intervention. About the time the thread was locked and moved for a 'clean up' we received a few more reports, and private messages and it was decided that it had broken down so far (by C&V standards) that it was best to just leave it closed and trashed.

Now if y'all want to argue about GP, Rivendell, odd philosophies and the like, have at it. If y'all want a pissin' contest with name calling, innuendos and completely off topic responses take it elsewhere.
Marty

With all due respect, do you think that starting a SECOND thread...after the first one got deleted...is likely to help or hurt your stated purpose of realizing that piling on is "crazy"? I would submit that this thread is a continuation of the problem. Whether you did it intentionally or not is something I can't know, but I think that was the only possible outcome. What Kurt wrote earlier is exactly right...a thread about a thread is a continuation of that thread. In this case it was the continuation of a hostile and rude thread that the moderators deemed outside of the site's scope.

Again spiral to Python
Lotek locks in the law
second thread dead

Listen, admit it - the ridiculous humor of this thread, such as these haiku, is arguably the best and most lighthearted portion of this discussion - if a bit silly (mods, insert "This is silly!" comment from Monty Python here).

No harm in a bit of good-natured nonsense - we need a bit of levity around here :D

That has got to be one of the best haiku I have ever read.
