box o crap pass-around game
Rules:
1. Pack a box of bike-related crap. Useful and working is a plus but not required.
2. Contents must weigh between 8 ounces and 3 pounds (227 grams and 1.4 kg).
3. Box must be mailed to your assigned recipient.
4. To get in on this game, you must email me at the address in my signature. Your subject line must be BOCPAG (which stands for box o crap pass-around game). Deadline for opting in is: Wed, Dec 8 at noon, Eastern Time (GMT-5). You are making a commitment and must be ready to supply a box o crap and bear the cost of shipping.
5. I will maintain a spreadsheet with public access, listing the names of participants. You will know everyone's sender and recipient, because you are to send your BOC to the person below you on the list. The person at the bottom will send to the person at the top.
6. I will distribute real names and mailing addresses to the senders.
7. Sender bears the cost of shipping.
8. You must send your box o crap between Dec 10 and Dec 30. Anyone who does not will receive the Huffy-head award, which includes public shaming.
9. Upon receiving your BOC, you must supply clear pictures and descriptions of what you have received. Post them to this thread.
10. I will announce winners after the last BOC has been received, so do not delay!

count me in! email forthcoming. and i think we should start with a flat-rate box, filled to the brim. why be tied to 3 lb? this way there's no weight limit and everyone pays $10.70. besides, depending on zone, regular shipping for 3 lb could be as high as $12.70.

No, wait. This means if you have ten players, they each send and receive a different box of different crap. I liked it better the way I suggested on the other thread, where there's only ONE box of crap making its rounds, with its contents changing over time, and some items --the set of Valentino derailleurs, for example-- go all the way around without any takers.
I know, it's your game and you can make the rules... but I'm not sure this is a game I want to play. Let me look around the basement a while....

I'm IN
Seems like it might be hard to keep this going, so a one time Secret Santa type box-0-crap is a good idea - and the flat rate medium box is a good idea too.
E-mail's coming.
Wait... what are the criteria for "winning" ?

yeah, i'm a little confused by tom's description. i assumed it was going to work like you suggested, rudi. personally, i like the idea of the originator (tom) packing a box as packed as he can get it, then sending it off to the next person on the list. that person takes what he wants, re-packs the same box (or a replacement of the same size, if damaged) to the brim (i think this should be a requirement for each participant-- the box is packed to the gills, but carefully), and passes it along. and so on...
and i don't get the "winner" part, either. aren't we all "winners" in this?

Rudi, your suggestion has merit, but I want there to be a definite end to it. You can run your game your way, during or after mine is done.
There will be various criteria for winning, such as recipient's satisfaction. I will also give awards to winning givers.

I have created the publicly accessible spreadsheet. If you are not on it, you should send me mail with the subject of BOCPAG.

I'm in for both kinds of game. I'll start with Toms since it's here and running. I'll do RHMs when it flies.
I guess those PODS shipping containers won't work?

Given the state of my basement/bike workshop, I was thinking of a deal along the lines of what SJS Cycles offers:

Ben, you crack me up.
There's a giant pile of shipping containers visible from the NJ Turnpike as you pass through Port Newark. I mean they're piled 50 or a hundred feet high, as far as the eye can see. It looks like a whole city of people could live in them if they were converted to housing. And given the need for more low income housing, I've often thought we should do it.
Well, now someone is doing it. There's a concept house made of a shipping container on the corner of Washington St and Charles St in Greenwich Village (Manhattan). It's gorgeous. You can walk in it.

! I lost a tiny little piece on my workshop floor. I couldn't find it with my eyes, so I tried a magnet. I swept around, and I got piles of metallic dust! All my metal shavings have mixed in with the regular floor schmutz. Darn.I guess one of these days I gotta vacuum and mop.

Holy crap this is wayyyy better than secret santa, you get a whole box people! Is this ok for Canucks too? Im used to mailing to the states so I know what the cost typically runs and im ok with it, I imagine there are fellas who think mailing to Canada costs an arm + leg and would scoff though, being stuck with a Canadian!

You may definitely play, Mr. Bright. Please email me your real name and mailing address.
Hey folks, do y'all mind if I publish your data in the spreadsheet? I'd like to because it's easier for me to keep it all in one place.

That would probably be a deal-breaker for me. I'd rather not have my name and address published on a public-assessable site.

OK, bigbossman. I won't publish your data or anyone else's. If you choose to participate, the sender of your box o crap will have to know your name or address or both. And in turn, you will learn that data of your recipient's.

I just put my box together... it was cathartic.
Whoever is below me on the list is going to get a big chunk of my soul. (1)
(1) - I don't actually believe in souls.

Hmm... I'd kind of like to play, but I'm fairly new to the C&V game and I don't know if the spare parts I've collected thus far are worthy. What level of crap are we talking here? I've got some stuff like slightly road rashed Gran-Compe brake levers, toe clips with black leather "Miyata" labeled straps, etc. Would that be up to par or is you guys "crap" probably stuff I'd be out trying to find for my "good" bike? Let me know before I join and whoever I ship to gets the crap end of the deal.
Besides, I've got a couple boxes of crap I'm giving away that I need to hurry up and send out anyway...
I may as well go ahead and clear the whole stash at once.
