Bikes: Old Bike: 1975 Raleigh Delta, New Bike: 2004 Norco Bushpilot

The Raleigh was built in 1975 in Waterloo, Qc, which I scavenged when a former landlord was going to toss it, there is a sticker on the frame for a Toronto bike shop "Hopkins Cycles" that went out of business in 1995. I've seen another bike of the same model at Parts Unknown in Toronto -- and amazingly even though it's an oddball collection of parts it was all original until I got my paws on it.

The Norco was built in 2004 in Malaysia was used by Norco as a factory demo, I bought it from the manufacturer through a contact I had there, that left the company shortly after I got the bike....

The Wife's bike is also a Raleigh, was also made in Malaysia sometime in the 1980's I suspect, don't have the S/N handy to know the exact year, have no history on the bike other then it passed through the Community Bicycle Network in Toronto at one point, and my examination of it is that some fool who new nothing about bicycles practised bicycle repair on it. My wondering is if I should strip it, powdercoat it, and rebuild it properly, although that is a project for next winter. May also see if I can find a small road bike cheap that needs work and then build that up for her....

Bikes: 85 Cilo, '91 Bianchi Volpe, '00 Gary Fisher, '74 Raleigh SuperCourse, '06 Soma Groove, '09 Nashbar X

Mine aren't so interesting compared to some of the other stories on here (especially the Olmo):
-Son's Raleigh - my parents bought it used in ~1977 for me. After being mercilessly abused as a kid's beater/commuter/cyclocross/MTB/'hey guys watch this' bike until I outgrew it, it sat up in their garage attic for ~30 years until Nick found it last summer.
-Cilo - bought while I was in high school from a friend who was moving to VT & wanted to get a MTB
-Bianchi Volpe - my first new bike, bought new from Frank's Spoke & Wheel, Framingham MA.
-SuperCourse-ebay
-GF Marlin - ebay
-Trek 600 - CL

Have you confirmed the Raleigh Sprite was made in England, a lot of Raleigh bikes that were made in Canada had the Nottingham, England head badge, even though they were built in Waterloo, Quebec. They can appear just like an English Raleigh right down to the 26tpi threading.

Bikes: all diamond frames

I have a Paramount from Chicago, A giant from Taiwan, a Schwinn from China, A raleigh from Kent, another Schwinn from Japan, a Motobecane from France. They all hang out together in the same garage. Funny, they aren't nearly as prejudiced about it all.

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

Two bikes from France:
One 84 Peugeot PSV, Owned since new. in Wisconsin
One 85 Vitus Carbone, bought used, seems to have been in the Chicago area in it's earlier life and must have been originally bought there and made it's way out West with it's owner.

Bikes: 71 Chrome Paramount P13-9, 73 Opaque Blue Paramount P15, 74 Blue Mink Raleigh Pro, 91 Waterford Paramount, Holland Titanium x2

Most of my bikes were bought whole on ebay, the only one that wasn't that is in my stable now is my chrome 72 P 15 that has the modern Campy drivetrain, that came as a bare frame from a bike swap. I have bought other bikes on Craigslist or swap meets, those have all been parted out and sold to finance my habit.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

My TS Isaac was built in Boulder, CO for the 1980 US Olympic Cycling Team. Bought from the builder in 1981. IIRC, $200 for frame/fork/headset (Super Record) and shifters (Record).

My Trek 720 I built in Wisconsin while I was at Trek.

My commuter bike is early 70s Italian, unknown builder. Given to me by 3rd owner as scrap d/t broken bottom bracket shell. Replaced BB shell 20+ years ago and still going strong.

My fixed gear conversion is an Atala, so Italy as well. eBay purchase, $20 for the frame IIRC.

My Superbe is British (Nottingham), of course. Craigslist, $120.

My innominate road bike was built by my wife while we were at Trek.

My innominate TT bike was built here in my basement in Appleton.

As was my innominate fixed gear.

My Gitane tandem is French. Purchased new with shipping damage (paint) for $350 in 1984.

Recalling Lewis Thomas: not "automobile" but rather "ipsomobile" or "autokinetikon."

Bikes: 1966 Raleigh DL-1 Tourist, 1973 Schwinn Varsity, 1983 Raleigh Marathon, 1994 Nishiki Sport XRS

My current stable consists of:

2 bikes that came from a lady in my church om 2008, when her daughter-in-law's father died. One was well-ridden- a 1966 Raleigh DL-1 Tourist (Nottingham made), the other was a 1994 Nishiki Sport XRS hybrid (US made) that was apparently bought new and then never ridden (still had nubs on the tires and original store price tag on the handlebars).

I got a 1973 Schwinn Varsity (American), fully intact, from the city dump when I was taking something else there.

I have 1983 Raleigh Super Course (Raleigh of America, when Huffy was running the franchise in the U.S., made in Japan) that I got in a trade with BF user brockd15. I gave a 1987 Schwinn Prelude to get the Super Course; the Prelude came from a pawn shop.

We have two newer bikes- a 2009 Schwinn Cutter my wife bought for me last Christmas, and her 2010 Biria Easy Boarding 3 from the same shop that we got at their liquidation sale (they are closed after today). I think both of those were made in China.

And I have a few old frames waiting to be built up in some fashion or another.

Bikes: 1987 Schwinn Voyageur

Good stories behind each one except the most recent

- 1988 Waterford Paramount: sold to me by my pastor, who is very much into bikes. I had gotten tired of trying to fix an old French gaspipe, and I knew he was selling a "nice bike". He said it was in my size, handed it over, and said "I've just sold you your first bit of crack". Boy, had he ever...

- 1986? Schwinn Voyageur SP touring: found on CL for $125 with panniers, rack, fenders, etc. Looked at it, and it looked beaten up as hell. Hesitated, posted pictures here, and everyone yelled at me to go buy the thing. So I did . Turns out the bike was actually ridden by an avid Austin tourer - he took it out to almost every state park around the area, taking food, water, camping gear on it...a wonderful past life. He had passed on 3 years previously, and his friend was selling the bicycle after holding onto it since his death. Hope to continue this bike's touring legacy.

- 1989 Team Miyata: ad on CL says "90's Miyata road bike for sale $250". No pic. I email, and the first thing I see are Dura-Ace levers. I do a double take, and notice it's a Team Miyata in my size being sold in Dallas. I drive up 3 hours, find the guy in Denton (picking up a frame from CusterMoustache on the way) and get the bike. It's in great shape, but waaaaay too small for the guy, and he just wanted to unload it. It's now with my brother in San Diego. Funny note: the bike was ridden by a surgeon, so the padding on the handlebars was reaaaaaaaal thick faux leather with tissue paper underneat. It felt like I was grabbing a gorilla's thumb or something.

- Ciocc Designer #??: On a whim, check out a Ciocc in Austin fro $455. It's in almost pristine condition, with great chrome, full DA setup. I paypal him on the spot. Dunno much about this frame, other than it's made its way from smaller cities to bigger ones gradually (being gifted from person to person).

And another from CL today. Pink Colnago circa '83.

Got lost for half an hour trying to find the place, in my convertible, in the 35 degree weather
