My administrative assistant has asked me to restore a bicycle that belonged to her sister when they were little kids. It's a CCM, made in Canada and based on a little internet research I am guessing the vintage to be ca. 1940's. I'd appreciate any insights that C&Vers can share about this marquee and model.

The stripes were painted by hand by some previous owner many, many years ago, over a hand coat of blue. Although there are a couple of places of overpaint on the headbadge and front rim, the paint is surprisingly careful. I love the "Wicked Witch of the West" candy cane stripes, too!

CCM-emblazoned cottered crank and chain ring. Most of this should clean up very well, I think.

Perhaps a Dunlop saddle? Like the rest of the bike, it, too, appears to have been painted blue - coils, leather, everything!

Bikes: roadsters, club bikes, fixed and classic

Here's a date chart for you...the serial number should be on the seat post lug...

It's likely a Dunlop rubber seat. Beware, they usually leave black marks on your arse

Maybe it's why they decided to paint it blue too while they were at it!

I'm pretty sure this saddle is leather. I'll check for sure when I bring it home from the office this evening.

I worked on a more recent CCM model last week. Cottered cranks and chain guards screwed in with Robertson screws. Unfortunately no one in the US knows what a Robertson screw is, so we didn't have a suitable screw driver at the bike co-op and I ended up having to remove it with a vise-grip.

Also the frame was pinned or bolted at the rear dropouts. Like how your seat stay is attached to the seat tube.

Thanks - this is perfect! So, if I read this correctly a serial number of "S 49965" indicates a 1931 vintage. I wonder what the remaining digits signify. Some manufacturers have a variety of indicators, including location of build, month, model, even paint codes I guess.

I presumed the saddle would be a Dunlop, but it is leather, and it has no name plate or other identifier on it anywhere I've been able to locate so far. Leads me to wonder if it is original now.

Some photos of the CCM mixte I repaired at the co-op. Robertson screws, cottered cranks, odd frame design... all made this unusual.
