Missed out on curbside find.
Yesterday I am on my way home. I was on my tribars, head down pushing kind of hard when out of the corner of my eye I see an old bike laying on it's side. As I ride past it.
In the quick glimpse I noticed just a few things.
It's complete-good
Has quick disconnect rims-good
Says Peugeot- good or at least potentially good.
It has center pulls-i think this dates it as at least 30 years old, but, i could be wrong.
So, I blow a U turn, go back and stop for a better look.
It has aluminum riims, good tires with air. Think is might have been suntour components, but unsure. It did not have a lug frame which leads me to believe it was a very low end Peugeot. I read the sticker on the frame, quickly. Said something about carbon steel, i think, but, i could be wrong.
Anyway, I was tempted to call the wife to bring the minivan over to haul it away, but, i said screw it. I'll take my pickup to work in the morning. If it's there, I'll snag it.
It wasn't.
Did I eff up? Is it possible this thing was actually worth something? I was gonna bring it home, clean it up and give it to my 12 year old son.
Wish I had given it a better look.

If you had grabbed it, somewhere there would be a boat without an anchor.

If it didn't say 531 you don't need to kick yourself. I sounds like a nice bike and it will make someone happy. Another will come along soon to make you happy.

NEXT time, slap your bike lock on your curbside find, and attach it to a nearby tree or traffic sign. Then you can return at your leisure and make a more reasoned determination. And even if it was a boat anchor, as BBM insinuated, you could make some money off it, if nothing else.
Aquakitty's comment could be true, though, so you want to be certain that it is trash day when picking a "complete bike, air in tires" off the curb.

Alternately, you can do what I once did: Carry the curbside find home while walking my own bike (it was only about 3 blocks).

Any thing free is worth picking up, plus there are a million fixie kids who want to brake there bones on a bike like that after they "fix it up". The barns, sheds, and attics are not empty yet, so you will get another shot.

lol i don't know where you live but a complete working bike with air sitting by itself unattended would not last 20 minutes here. I put out a completely stripped women's MTB frame on the sidewalk and it was gone within an hour.
A complete working bike might have been someone's though, so I think you would be obligated to wait around for a little while to make sure. Probably should report it to the police too to make sure you don't get busted riding stolen property.. it could be stolen and abandoned.
but yes if you see a free bike, take it, cause someone else will if you don't. especially if it's working.. it's a free ride somewhere for someone at the very least

Not all lugless Peugeots are junk either. My HLE PH10 is 23 pounds, 1 ounce. Has some decent cartridge hub 80's wheels, Cyclone M-II, and a chrome replacment CrMo fork. Yeah it surprised me too

I don't like the lugless Peugeots; just don't look right to me. But I'm off topic.
In your situation, I have done all of the following:
Ridden home while pushing the dumpster bike alongside;
walked home pushing both bikes;
walked away pushing both bikes until I got to a suitable spot to stash the dumpster bike in the bushes; then ridden home and come back in the car;
ridden home, walked back and walked the dumpster bike home;
ridden home carrying part of the dumpster bike, such as a wheel, and come back in the car to get the rest;
ridden home and come back in the car to find the dumpster bike gone;
and probably others.
You did what you did; you lost nothing, and besides, there's no use in second guessing yourself. And someone else took it, so all's well that ends well.

I found a nice old Sekai 400, not a great bike but pretty much scratchless Tange2 at the curbside while riding last year. I grabbed it pushed both bikes until the next stand of woods and stashed it to pick up after work. Also, I like to bike around town hitting rummage sales in the summer and a couple of years ago I found a nice Mavic Wheelset for 5 bucks, I had to buy it on the spot and ended up riding back one handed holding two wheels in the left hand. Free or cheap doesn't come around all that often and you just have to snatch it up, hopefully you find another freebie soon.

Low end maybe, but it would have made a nice beater for a 12 year old.

Lesson: Don't leave you bike curb-side while taking a leak behind a hedge. Vultures at least wait for their meals to die first. In the past few years my boys have lost at least 4 bicycles because " I just went to the back door to see if _______ was home and when I came back it was gone!"
