I wish I had more space!
I live in a very big home for where it is located. We have a 3 bedroom 2000 sq ft house in Cambridge. We have a driveway ie 'off street parking' which is a huge plus for our area. But with 2 kids there is no space for any hobbies. Especially to store something as big as bicycles.
Currently, we have 6 bikes in our house.
I have my modern road bike (Pinarello FP3) which I ride for fun and exercise, occasional charity rides etc. There is my street rig (Slim Chance fixed gear from my messenger days), which I use to get around town solo. My mountain bike (mid 90s Yeti) has been re-purposed as a tow vehicle to ferry the kids around town. My wife rides a 1990 Bridgestone RB-1 that I stripped down and restored/rebuilt with moderni-ish parts. We have 2 kids bikes: a 12" Go Diego Go bike, and a 20" Gary Fisher. We also have a trailer and a trail-a-bike.
I wish I had more space, a garage, bigger cellar etc to house more C&V bikes. I have no space for N+1. We don't really even have space for N.
Here is something I have noticed recently. I have been riding my wife's bike with my toddler in tow for training rides and I get nothing but smiles, thumbs up, and compliments from other riders, drivers, pedestrians. When I ride the 'plastic fantastic' Pinarello by myself, I either get ignored (fine by me) or I get attitude -sometimes even open hostility!
I guess I don't really have a point beyond that I wish I had storage space for more bikes and C&V bikes make people happier than modern bikes.

Look at it as a blessing, the more room for bikes you have the greater the need to fill it up. I have a 2 car garage, a basement workshop and 2 sheds where I can put bikes. My family bike count for the five of us is 11 bikes. Just maintaining those is getting to be a pain.
I know part of the problem is I am never happy to leave them as is. Something is always getting changed or modified. Which leads to more things getting changed. It really takes away from the riding time. But as long as I have the room, I don't see getting rid of any of them and will probably add more as the kids get older. My oldest now wants to start working on bikes and selling them too.

We don't have a garage, so most of my bikes are crammed into my basement, which has a 1,000 sq ft footprint, but maybe a quarter or third of that is where my bikes are. I do lots of hanging storage plus a couple of freestanding bike racks. I store at least 20 bikes that way.

I got a garage, but that is junked up! I been using one of the bedrooms. But, lately I have used the kitchen!
This morning I noticed I had 6 bikes in the kitchen!! Also, I have even been known to use a bathroom to store bikes, temporary, that is!!

I just have a 1 bedroom apartment that I share with my wife and 2.5 month old daughter. Definitely wishing I had some room to do bike repairs.

I don't have 20 bikes, or 10 bikes. But I too wish I had another one or two, or three. Yes I too am here because on the road and the net it's a little nicer to those on classic bikes. Why people don't like expensive bikes. Don't know.

But they are costly + I think I could build something just as effective for a lot less money.

Build a bike shed.
I've built 2 in the past.
In current house I just took over the garage.

I've given some thought to building a bike shed in the backyard, but my yard is the size of a postage stamp, so the basement is what I use (and all access goes through a bulk-head door, which can be kind of tricky to negotiate).

Bingo -my nearly exact situation. We do have a long-ish tandem driveway. We can fit 3 cars, 4 if they are small and packed bumper to bumper. We only have one car so I was thinking about using the rest of the space for a bike locker or maybe a shed. A full sized shed will look ridiculous and take up too much space(esp vert space), but maybe something about the size of a dumpster would work.

Look, the bikes expand to fit whatever space you have. All of us could use more space. I have a few too many, because we're also bulging at the seams. I use half of the basement and most of the garage, too. I can never manage to count the bikes, but I think I have 30 or 40. I think I peaked near 50. This includes bikes that haven't been restored and sold yet, and it also includes bikes people drop off for repairs.

This all comes up because recently there has been a slew of great bikes in my size popping up at great prices and I don't have space for any of them!

I'm in a 1-bed with my girlfriend and wish I had more space too. Unfortanately I'm going to do some serious downsizing as there are too many bikes (8 or 10 if you count frames) for the space we have.
4 of them are on the chopping block. Lemond, Cannondale, my Nashbar cross/commuter, and a boat anchor Motobecane 10 speed.
Fortunately, I have a barn at my parents' place (central MA) that has limitless bike storage so out of season bikes and future projects can be stored there.

Rocket Sauce, I think we're about the same size and the reason I haven't been jumping lately hasn't been a space issue so much as a haven't been able to convince my wife about n+1 yet issue. She does however need a new bike and is about my size as well. Maybe I can sell her on getting "her" a new bike that I might just have to ride a lot as I figure out how best to set it up for her.

I think I have 8 at the house, and its just about the max I can fit without compromising a room beyond the garage..I'm looking to sell two so I can have a manageable amount.

Is space really the final frontier? It depends on how many bicycles one has, I suppose. I have a smallish 2-bedroom house with basement. My wife's road bike lives on a trainer in the livingroom. My two road bikes and our tandem live in the basement. There is not enough room. End of story.

How about the attic? Can you access it? Or do you have a flat roof?
Having a shed is convenient, but also convenient to thieves. It can get tough living in a city.
If you must have N+1, you can rent a storage garage for those not often ridden collectibles. But you'd have to venture outside metro Boston to find good rates. I got a quote of $35/month for a half-garage in NH, when I was still living in Boston.
I went from a 2 bedroom condo in Brighton to a 3-car garage, 2800+ sq ft house, I thought I had enough space. But that proved to be wrong very quickly. Currently there are 10 full bikes in there, 2 my wife's, 1 my son's, and the rest are mine. 4-5 flips in various stages, and boxed frames (~9 all projects in need of work) !!!
I have too much crap!
So, it's probably more of a mixed blessing that you are short of space. The additions are sidetracking me from riding. :-\

I try not to count, but I currently have 30 complete-ish bikes and 2 framesets that are mine, two complete bikes and 1 frameset that belongs to my wife, and two kids' bikes for my two kids in my house, mostly in the basement (four in the front porch, one in the dining room, one in the backyard under a tarp). Whenever I think I'm culling the herd, I make the mistake of counting. I even sold one today!

Truthfully, I got sick of tripping over bikes in my house, so I sold 5 of 'em a few weeks back. IT FELT GREAT!!! If I was being completely honest with myself, I could part with at least two more...maybe 3. I have a 1,000 sq.ft. bungalow to myself. I've got a "full basement" with a whopping 5'8" ceiling...I'm 5'7". At first, I had them in the kitchen, dining room, living room, and even the second bedroom was stocked. All rooms had about 3 bikes in 'em. Now...
The second bedroom is now a laundry room, so bye bye bikes. I inherited our magnificent family heirloom dining room table, so bye bye bikes. One remains. The living room is, well, a living room. Bye bye bikes except for one. The mud room, which is the former laundry room, has my 2 road bikes hanging, and my mountain bike standing by, ready for action. The other 3 are in the basement, and like I said before, I could get rid of maybe two of the basement bikes and not notice an impact in my life.
Quality over quantity. That Slim Chance of yours sounds magnificent!

I'm finally realizing that myself. I hope to have only two road bikes by the end of the summer (both high end Eddy Merckx), one cyclocross bike for bad weather and commuting (and cyclocross), and one mountain bike. Then, instead of buying any new bikes for myself, I will just upgrade the bikes I have.

I don't suppose any of you with too many bikes and too little room in the Boston area have a 58 or so cm mixte that's taking up too much room do you? I'm looking for a bike for my 6' wife and she wants something "girly" (though I'm not sure of the wisdom of a step through for an athena). Just thought you know that I'd offer to help you guys make some room so you can move on to your next project.
