Uniglide to Hyperglide conversion... dustcap?
Hi Guys,
So I'm working on an old Schwinn 564 for a friend, and I'm updating the drivetrain from the old Exage/SportLX groupo. I bought a hyperglide STX-RC freehub from sheldonbrown, and a new cassette. My problem is that when the old axle is reassembled, there's a big gap in the freehub well, so the bearings/race aren't protected.
I don't know if I'm supposed to find a dustcap that fits the freehub somehow (and won't interfere with the threads for the cassette lockring), or if I need a dustcap/cone combo. I tried looking up the replacement cone for the rear driveside stx-rc hub, but it doesn't have a dustcap component to it.
I see archived threads mention this dilemma, but I can't seem to find anyone saying "Oh yeah, I just used _____ and problem solved."
Thanks for any help/suggestions. I have the bike completed, all but for this snag.

in this particular case the dustcap needs to match the cassette body. you need the cone/dustcap combo that goes with that era body.
I recently did something similar. I took an old 6spd uniglide wheel and put a 7spd hyperglide body on it but I had to rob the axle and cone/dustcap from a 8spd hub I had lying around.
check Loose Screws, Bike tools ect, Harris Cyclery. with the Harris Cyclery site you can access the QPB inventory.

I just bought a complete NOS hub/freehub/axle/cones/etc assembly off eBay, and then moved drive side stack over with the freehub.
It ended up making the OLD a hair wider than it was before.
The hardest part was getting the freehub off the loose hub. Since I had no need for the hub, I nailed it through the spoke holes to a log.
