Why not. It was a prime example. Prices have been very good for the right bikes lately despite the economy. There's collectors out there taking this stuff seriously. One day that 16G may seem like a bargain.

Also, according to a post on the CR list this bike was listed for months on the AZ. CL for $4000. I guess all you flippers missed a good score there!

Yeah, unfortunately, you may be right. Never underestimate the power of hipsters to take something and screw it up. I've seen a LOOK 496 Track decked out with risers on as a "sweet fixie". That frame is hand-built to order with a MSRP of $10K and a wait list of 6 months to a year.

These bikes were or are also for sale. Check on the Bay.

The Laser is worth it if you have the money. I am not sure if one can find an other example of this bike which is in that shape...., so I guess some collectors had the same in their mind when bidding.

I don't think it would have made the same final price today. Not after the DOW dropping almost 1,200 points in two days....

LOOK 496 "fixie":

This is a street bike.

It can be seen here at the 3:17 mark in a track stand contest.

A LOOK 396:

It's sad the amount of money people will pay to impress others.

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes here, but what makes this bike worth it? $2K? Yes. $4K? Maybe. But SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS?!

So, the winner pays the money and receives the bike next week. Then what? What does one do with such a bike?

It's a bike with no nostalgic value. It was not used by a great rider in some great event (Olympics, World Championships, etc...). Just a few masters (age 40+) races. No museum would be interested because it is not associated with any such event. And it's certainly not able to be raced as it is barely fit to be ridden.

I can only suspect that it's a hipster from Japan or Hong Kong where, right now, over the top bikes are turning up left and right. It's not unusual to see a Mavic IO ($4K) on street "fixies" over there. But, it's a size 57, so maybe not.

Yeah, but the next highest bid was $16,500.00 by a guy with 74 transactions and a rating of 100%.

The hipster with the coin will then turn fortyfive one day and find out his body cannot take the TT position for too long without pain..........then he sells it for $25K???!

Well, I agree it's not worth 16k... but it's definitely an awesome bike, in amazing condition. The cinelli stitch on grips are really cool.

This single Highland malt Scotch whisky from the Dalmore Distillery in Inverness, Scotland, was one of only twelve bottles produced in 1943 from four single malts dating from 1868, 1876, 1926 and 1939. Each was labeled with its own unique name, this one being called Matheson after the Dalmore Estate’s owner, Alexander Matheson. It was purchased for £32,000 at the Pennyhill Park Hotel in Surrey, where the anonymous buyer reportedly shared it with five of his friends. It has been speculated that the buyer and his friends are the only people to have actually enjoyed a bottle of the expensive vintage. Dalmore 62 – $58,000

But that pales in comparison to this Macallan that went for $460,000. They did throw in a one of a kind Lalique decanter.

Some Japanese tube amplifiers costing tens of thousands of dollars have no circuit boards but rely on discrete parts and several pounds(yes, pounds) of silver wiring.

20 pounds of silver in every Ongaku

The Laser was a fabulous looking bike made in a very small quantity and it has the name Cinelli on it. Some Asian looking to impress his buddies just HAD to buy this and pay more than anyone else just for bragging rights.

I agree - it's nuts!

You can get a brand new Fiat 500 for less than that! (OK, no Fiat jokes please!)
