Now now, just because the Fiat 500s sold in the USA are assembled in Mexico, in the old PT Cruiser plant.

What do you think it would cost to get a modern framebuilder to braze up a frame like that? It's steel! Look at that BB area! Stunning craftsmanship.

Hipsters, Really? I love how when a person spends a lot of money on something, everybody here who would not spend that kind of money on the same assumes the person is a dolt and is going to use said purchase in some idiotic way. Maybe that person is smarter than you, afterall they have a lot of money to spend, which means they were smart enough to earn it or smart enough to be born with it.

Honestly when it comes to collecting you cannot always quantify what a "lot" of money is, when it's spent on a piece that does not come up for sale often enough to track prices, or is in the kind of condition you may never see again. Not everybody is a collector, I'm not, but I understand the passion and drive that serious ones have. And it's not always the well heeled. I've seen guys who live like paupers but will spend thousands on a 1920's blues 78. It's just priorities (their own).

I personally might not agree with what some collectors spend, but I respect their right to spend their money, and would never piss on their parade when they do.

Suppposedly it was a lot of bondo in the originals. But I'm sure there are builders out there today who could do it in steel. Might cost a lot to do it though

So, the winner pays the money and receives the bike next week. Then what? What does one do with such a bike?

It's a bike with no nostalgic value. It was not used by a great rider in some great event (Olympics, World Championships, etc...). Just a few masters (age 40+) races. No museum would be interested because it is not associated with any such event. And it's certainly not able to be raced as it is barely fit to be ridden.

I can only suspect that it's a hipster from Japan or Hong Kong where, right now, over the top bikes are turning up left and right. It's not unusual to see a Mavic IO ($4K) on street "fixies" over there. But, it's a size 57, so maybe not.
It comes down to basic supply and demand...

Supply-How many original Cinelli Laser funny-bikes can there be in the world that are this original, this nice, decked-out with all the Cinelli peripheral accessories, and have their entire history (even if it's w/out provenance) this well documented? I bet you could count the number on one hand if even that was needed.

Demand-The Laser was the pinnacle of the Cinelli product line in the 1980s. The Laser represented everything that the organization stood for at that point-innovation and style. The bikes have been recognized as modern works of art and may be one of the most recognizable high-end bikes from that era. It was the 288 GTO of the bike world. As a result, there are many that view the Laser as THE bike to have-the crown of their collection.

Would I have paid $16K for this bike? If I was in love with the Lasers, absolutely! However, the amount of bondo used in the bikes has always been a turn-off for me. Otherwise, I may have had to empty out the bike/hobby car/motorcycle fund.

Now that Olmo that he has for sale. Hmmmm...

Bikes: Old Steelies I made, Old Cannondales

I would be pretty nervous selling a 16K bike to a 0 feedback buyer ....

Are you kidding? It's a brilliant investment. Take a look at the stock market. Banks have recently started charging negative interest rates to their bigger customers.

There are many, many worse places to invest your money at the moment...

Makes most of my purchases over the past number of years look like absolute bargains

Not that there weren't a few bona-fide bargains.

Rare = big coin. They've always had a following and always will.

It's sad the amount of money people will pay to impress others.
What's cycle-speak for overkill?

I also agree that 16K is ridiculous. It's mostly based on speculation by the buyer; he/she is expecting (praying?) the value of the bike to go up. There's no historical value in the bike and it's more of a nice design experiment than anything. But if you have money, a sense of reasonableness diminishes.

I don't think the late owner of the collection would have placed the same value on it. But maybe they are leaving out a bunch of stuff and don't know what is marketable.

Does make me think that I should write a few notes on mine just in case.

oh man that look 496 posted earlier is hilarious! the kid riding it in the picture is a little chubster! not that there's anything wrong with being a little out of shape but I would be thoroughly embarrassed riding a bike as expensive as that with no muscle definition whatsoever. he probably averages <15 mph.

I asked Cinelli a few years ago if they would build a "new" Laser frame for me. They said that it could be discussed but that it wouldn't be cheap. There is now talk that Cinelli will be presenting a new Laser at Eurobike... It would therefore appear that this sold just on time to increase teh value of the new production...

I wonder if there is any coincidence to what is featured on the "enter" page of the Cinelli website: https://www.cinelli.it/

There was a moser bike that sold for 9k just within the month on eBay. So this isn't the only hardcore collector out there. Must be nice having money to burn.
