cool dumpster find...vintage atala

imo
an almost complete vintage atala
definetly looking for feedback on maybe how old the bike might be
i'm thinking 70s or even earlier
here are the highlights with pics below

shimano crane rear derailler
suntour cyclone fr
fr wheel - campy hub, ambrosio rim
ttt stem
maxy (sugino) crank set
shimano brake levers (no calipers)
suntour power shifters
double leg kickstand

basically was dumping a frame after picking parts of another free bike and i came across this old thing - i'm diggin it - cause i like the old and crusty - the most value i think is in the wheel - spins true - no rust

btw - sorry for the crappy pics - its the only kind i take

Does the TTT stem say "Made Italy" (Instead of Made IN Italy)?

If so, I'd guess late 60's.

The other components could well be later replacements - but there is some good stuff there and I'll bet the bike will clean up just fine.
Looks like a steel seat post, so I have every expectation that it will free up.
Excellent snag.

Back from when I was a noob and the nicest bike I owned was a Fuji Sports 10 or something similar. Here is an old catalog page somebody posted in that thread:

Bikes: one of each

Wow. I just Ebayed one of those Cranes for a LOT of money (it was NIB, though). All of those parts are pretty classy. Chrome lugs in the dumpster!?!

thanks guys - yeah - you're not really supposed to take stuff from the recyc center but...
what is recycling anyway right
plus i couldnt just leave this lying there

btw - one thing that made me thing possible 60s was the ATALA and GRANd PRIX lettering
the style of font just seemed 60s to me - more gut and that i have spent too much time looking @ old bike

my previous best score there was my 78 letour
its obvious that the person that brought it in
had no idea in what they had or just couldnt care for whatever reason
i was especially suprised to see the campy hub
still deciding what to do with it all

btw - the adjustable cup is different here
like - i gotta get the arm off to really check it out
but from a superficial inspection it didnt seem
to be 'adjustable'
there's a lock nut or ring but the cup seems to curve inward towards the bracket
and it doesnt seem to have any areas where you can grab purchase
whadda ya think

I think the spindle doesn't fit the BB. That's my guess, anyway. Good score nonetheless!

I don't suppose it's your size? That would be so cool. Perhaps too much to ask for, though.

its def on the small side of what i ride - that said - i might throw it in the stable

first thing is to take a look at the BB - there's play down there so i need to address it anyway
but i still have thoughts of selling some parts

here's the thing - i would love to break my horder tendency and sell a few things
if i could do this - my wife might take a different look at my obsessive CV seeking
which i might add i've been hitting some nice deals in the last few months

I always thought those Tipo hubs were cool looking with the holes instead of the slots on the Record hubs. Cool find nevertheless!

I would guess then, that your stem predates my late 60's 3T item, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the stem - and perhaps that kickstand, are original.

those hubs ranged from late 60s into the 80s it sounds like
the crane derailler is a 70s piece
the frame lettering has me thrown - i cant find anything like it on the net - i'm just so intrigued

btw - i see this tipo front
hub - attached to an ambrosio rim - i might be able to score a few bucks on the bay - no?

i dont know if i want to let it go though

That was exactly what I thought. Lots of people that don't have a clue about the value of C&V bikes. <sigh> And for every one that is salvaged, it would be great to know how many end up destroyed. I'm sure there are tons of really nice bikes that have went to scrap because of ignorance.

If you keep the bike, I'd suggest you keep the wheel with it and add a similar looking rear.
(I'd make a few other changes as well, but probably keep the derailleurs even though they're newer than the bike.)

Very cool. I still have the Atala my originally mom got for a NY Youth Hostel trip on Cape Cod, 1961 or 1962. I guess my grandfather just bought what they told him to buy...

There's play because there's no lockring. There's no lockring, because, as rhm said, the spindle is the wrong size. But you'll fix all these problems.

Someone recently said his Atala rides nicely, even though it's a piece of ____. I had the Giro D'Italia, the model just below this one. I don't remember how it rode. It was my first 10-speed.

do you think the fixed and adjustable are reversed - unfortunately - i havent had time to get at the BB - you might be right about the spindle

also - i just peaked at the serial stamp drive side seat cluster
we have a 7 as what appears to be the first number - cannot make out the second and most of the stamp is very faded - i would guess this is a 70s model as the component dating would also point to that

anyway - i want to ride it eventually - we'll see how it goes w the BB - very curious

I doubt that the Japanese cranks and DRs are original to the bike.

Bikes: 71 Chrome Paramount P13-9, 73 Opaque Blue Paramount P15, 74 Blue Mink Raleigh Pro, 91 Waterford Paramount, Holland Titanium x2

I'd say early 70's, based on the Shimano Crane and the Sugino Maxy.

Nice that the Italian chrome seems like it will clean up, it is usually pitted or peeling.
