Flame me if you must! Chinese postal bike!
Didn't have a camera with me today.. Met a gentleman on the path
ridding a Chinese postal bike from the 30's. Brand new. Found it in
his uncles garage after he passed away. He had spent several years
in China as a missionary in the thirties and early forties.
They put new tires on it, the originals looked OK, but he didn't
trust them.
It has an inclosed chain, drum brake on the rear, pinch on the
front, rod activated. Rack on the back. It has a park brake under
the seat. It has a plate in the front part of the frame triangle
with a Chinese symbol cut out of it. It has a "y" kick stand.
Full fenders, generator and lights front and rear. It is red and
blue, red frame, dark blue fenders and rack.
I sure wish I had my camera with me.......
I hope it see him again and I will have my camera..

My first bike was a blue Tsunoda (nee Lotus) with 24" wheels, push stand, rod brakes and sealed drive. I learned to ride by pushing myself off the stand. Think my folks junked it after I got my Sears Screamer in 5th grade. Years later I rode a tofu delivery bike in Taipei with double top tubes, rod brakes and a rack the girth of a Weber grill. 29er no doubt. Talk about biking, there's nothing more compelling than the sight of a Chinese family of four riding on one of these with dad at the helm, mom on the rack, and the kids on whatever's left, usually top tube, handlebar or mom. Grab a picture the next time!

Man, I can't believe this. But we have rules against flame warfare, so I guess you can slide this time.
Still... next time: camera. Savvy?

Though I will voice some skepticism that this fine bike is really from the 30's. I'm sure it is very much like English bikes of the 30's and, not to mention Indian, Chinese, and Japanese ones. But I'm equally sure the same bike was being manufactured in China throughout the 50's and even 60's with few changes. All this, yes, without photos to tell me anything.

The story I got was that his uncle had lived in the house since the early 50's and was a bit of a recluse. The
house had not been lived in for about twenty five years. His son was in an institution and nothing could be
done until his death this past year. The family is getting rid of the property now. The garage was full of
junk, old furniture and trash. The bike was at the very back, most likely one of the first things put in
there.
All the markings, badge and wheels are in Chinese. There is some painted script on the chain housing in
Chinese.
Note, after a lot of looking, I think it is Japanese! This is it! I added the plate in the triangle in bright red.
The rack and fenders are dark blue.

wow. Yous guys are brutal Yes, we need larger pics. BTW, Japanese use characters that evolved from Chinese ones, so the bike could be Japanese. If it really is from the 30's, it could be Chinese, or Japanese. I'll take Cap'n Blight's bet though and say it isn't American made. If you have some pictures of the lettering and script I can have my wife translate them when she gets home.
DID YOU TAKE A PICTURE OF THE HEAD BADGE?

I'll bet it's going to look like the 4th bike down on this page: Rod brakes, rear drum, 28" wheels (and I have FOUR pix!):

If I posted something that turned into a "pile on" I would be so pleased.
Everyone wants to be popular and have all their friends joking.
Maybe one day you could do this for me!
