Do you consider yourself a collector?
#2
Yes. Definitely more of a collector than a hard core rider. Prior to bikes my main interest in collecting was Japanese car parts. But now its bikes, furniture and anything else that is old and well made.

i guess so - but no garage queens - my bikes all ride - i would say i'm rider first
kinda into collecting bike tools too - have about 20 fw removers - and have even bought some that i didnt need
dont collect anything else though

Yes I consider myself a collector/curator/restorer. While not all my bikes are in 'off the rack' configuration, I try to maintain (like most of you) the spirit of the era.

Yes, I'm a collector. It's a pathology, I'm well aware of that. I started with coins when I was about ten. One of my favorite novels, Something Fresh, by P. G. Wodehouse, is about collectors; which is a big part of why I like it.
But with bikes I am primarily a rider. I only collect bikes because (a) I love to ride and (b) because I have this habit....

About 5 years ago I heard my daughter tell a friend her Dad is rich because he owns 2 bikes. In kid world I guess bikes equal lots of money.
I am up to six now, makes me feel like the Richie Rich of bikes. I guess that makes me a collector, but everything gets ridden with nothing hanging on the wall. Not that you would want to hang any of mine on the wall. They are mostly middle of the line bikes that fit me well and ride well.

I would consider myself a collector and a fairly avid cyclist, who really likes to wrench for therapy when I'm not riding or hanging out here on BF.

Bikes: Was Fuji and got my grails (Pro, Pro SR, Design Series, & Ti). Now I hunt 50's/60's road bikes.
It's all related for me. I also collect old Fuji posters

and the early catalogs.
I still consider myself a rider first, but I should be done collecting bikes by the beginning of the prime riding season. Poster collecting should become the focus of my collecting attention, but it is sooo difficult.

Not any more.
I love these C&V bicycles, but I am bringing the herd back down to reality.
I love many of the Italian racers for their aesthetics, and spry road manners.
American builders for the same reasons.
But I can only ride so many, and I'll be spending the next season or two on gravel and single track.
Most of my buddies race gravel events in the Midwest, and MTBs in several events as well.
I am joining them and likely building from new, not nos.
So, the sales parade has begun.
I sold a very nice Curt Goodrich frameset to another teacher in our district yesterday.
Present for her husband.
I really need a gravel road racer for this season, and I don't have a bicycle here that fills that need.
A full suspension mtb is on the horizon as well.

I've always had an acquisitive nature, and I did collect coins and rocks as a child. However - I don't think of the things I own now as "collections", given that they are used on a daily basis.
E.g., I have more chairs in my house than I can sit on, and more pairs of underwear than I can don at any given moment:
-Does that make me a chair collector? - I think not.
-An underwear collector? - I hope not!

Yes.
I also collect chairs. (These aren't my pictures.)

There are more but I won't completely bore you to death. I also restarted fly fishing a couple of summers ago. I do love those old-school bamboo rods. n+1 rule applies there too.

That's an interesting, and funny, take Auchencrow. I must have thirty ball caps, so I guess I collect hats, even though my wife admonishes me "you only have one head, why all the hats?" I only have 3 bikes so I guess I don't collect bikes. These are interesting responses but perhaps I worded my original post incorrectly. I have noticed that folks that acquire vintage bikes often share an interest in other vintage things. A subject that has probably been addressed here before. So, do you collect other things besides vintage bikes?
Pics OK.

Those are beautiful Iab, and you haven't bored me. Just the kind of thing I'm looking for. To explore members' other interests. Do you have a Mies chair? As for bamboo fly rods, I can't quite say I'm a collector as I only have a few, but they are nice ones. A more beautiful, hand-made, utilitarian object I can't imagine.

Bikes: too many or not enough
I'm a collector for sure. I know some here don't really approve but I almost never ride my vintage bikes. I do ride quite a bit but it is almost always my mountain bike or modern road bike. I collect the vintage bikes because I think they are beautiful, I like to work on them and I like to think that my collecting and preserving them means some other person will have the opportunity to see/own/ride these bikes in the future.

I get hooked pretty easily into collecting things I really like such as die cast cars, I have probably 80 to 100 in various scales primarily geared towards historic motorsports.
Here's a few, I also build and collect 1/24-1/25 scale model cars that I primarily kitbash into my own creations.

As far as bikes go, I would collect them if I could ride them and with my size requirements it's just not that easy so at this point my personal collection is at two. If I had more cash I could find more but it's just not that easy to stumble across 64cm+ bikes.

Tis all good 'rootboy'. I only have three bikes myself, and one of them is (gasp) a MTB. I'm not a collector by any stretch of the imagination, just mainly a rider and wrencher. All my bikes are top notch though, even the MTB, which is a cro-moly hardtail GT. Been screwing around with bikes since I was a kid, and never let up. I take pride in my abilities that I can do almost anything, from building houses to overhauling engine blocks. Several years ago I wanted a bike trailer to pull my grandson around, so I built one. These days I seem to wrench more than ride though. I keep all my family's bikes up, and my friends bikes as well. I have two bike repair stands and more often than not someone's bike is always clamped in it.
I'm also somewhat of a small time knife collector.

Started collecting antiques as a kid, mugs and steins (mainly German) from the late 1800s/early 1900s. That obsession has passed, but I need to sell them.
Started collecting mission and arts and crafts furniture and lighting as an adult. We have owned several homes from that era. Most of it is installed and in use (every light fixture in the house is antique, anywhere from late 1890s to early 1930s). Almost every piece of furniture is also antique. If you are into antique lighting, we have some nice pieces.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG
Yes...I collect, but I also ride. With a couple of exceptions everything I own, I ride (or my bride does, I don't fit on a Raleigh Colt). I have a soft spot for old Raleigh 3 speeds or similar bikes. I also have the bad habit of accumulating small wheeled bikes. None of my bikes are what I would consider the consummate collectable but they make me happy and I enjoy working on and riding them, and even letting others ride them on occasion.
