Hell is having to listen to another freaking Whitney Houston tribute. I can't even imagine how horrifying karaoke must be right now.

Oh man, that explains all the cool bikes coming out of your mancave, sloar! Evasion is agreat thing. But things might turn around. When my sister was younger she terrorized the household with her britney spears tapes (back when she was still in her cute schoolgirl act, way before she turned into a bald, leather clad harlot with dependancy issues. Edit- that was 'bout britney
). She listens to much better music now.

Was briefly in art school with Wes (their cover artist) . Actually have an original cd pressing of "Southern Rock Opera " they released themselves ; wasn't available much north of RVA. Used to see them at Poe's here in town.

I hear U2 music and I think, "Look at that guy 'Under the Blood Red Sky' at Red Rocks waving the white flag." That's it for me. Every U2 record for me is that white flag.
When the mainstream got their hands on punk, they turned it into an anemic pretty thing, where it kind of lost it's teeth and claws and spine and ability to bring truth to power, to point the lights and go, "There! That is f---ed up! It's you, motherf---er!. Lock him up!" Joe Strummer, if he was alive now and gone through eight years of George W. Bush, I don't think he would have suffered that guy lightly.
What has been called "punk" since ~1991 just isn't. It has the appearance of it, but I don't hear it. It just sounds kind of more like complaining than real outrage. But it's not for me to say. Let's pretend you like these mainstream punk-pop bands. Right on! I'm not going to put you down for what you like. Go get the T-shirt. Go to the gig. Life is short. Get out there, man, because all of a sudden, you're 40+, your tastes are considered "classic and vintage" (without being ironic), and you don't have time to go see gigs.

I'm sure you like the Flatlanders, then. I have an eight track somewheres... seriously, if you like Gram, Townes, Guy Clark, JDG, check out the 357 String Band. Sorta like the Pogues filtering Doc Watson via Steve Earle. Hard to explain, really quite themselves. "Thunder From the North" is along with "Carolina Funk" (an amusing and amazing collection of rare funk from the sixties and seventies from the Carolinas, truly eye opening) one of my fave things music wise during the last couple months. That kinda good.
Thanks!

That book/movie definitely struck a chord with me...thank God I'm able to laugh at myself (I'd have to!). Yes - I've been the jerk that's gone into a record shop and asked for Frank Zappa original, not re-released (underline) records.
I'm still that guy, I've just moved on to bikes. "Do you have any Cinellis, not restored (underline)?"z
This brings up an interesting analogy - U2 is the Windsor Professional of rock n' roll.

Do you guys arrange your bike collections alphabetically, by country, by genre, by brand, by age, or by color?
FYI, they filmed the record store scenes around the corner from my old apartment here.
There's two kinds of people in life: Stones fans, and Beatles fans. You can like both, but one of them will always appeal to you more than the other.
While we're on the topic, you can also divide the world into Little Rascals fans and Three Stooges fans. I prefer the Rascals to the Stooges. Unless we're talking music. Then, I prefer the Stooges to the Rascals.

Kinks fans
We weirdos like like the Kinks better than either.
I like The Beatles and Stones almost evenly for different reasons. The Stones made music I like more and I think it's better rock, The Beatles made better pop and were lyrically heads and shoulders above the The Stones.
Then you have The Kinks - lyrically superior to The Beatles and rocked as hard as The Stones (when they wanted to). The nasal voices and bad luck kept them from being as loved as they should have been.

Those kinds of record stores still exist. It's the chains that don't.

Jumping in this late... I'm just tired of over-produced garbage. I want drummers beating the hell out of drums. I don't want every strike on a drum kit to be at the same level. I might choke the next Jack Johnson sounding singer I run across. Guitarists........... (I am one), tone is created first and foremost by the instrument, then the amplifier. Fix these two first, then break out the pedals. I'm tired of everything sounding like it's running through a Metal Zone/Distortion pedal with the 'level' cranked all the way up. I almost never use pedals. I have different guitars for different tone.
Tone is shot, production value is shot. I'm thankful for people like the Black Keys, through whom I've found many other bands who still have some raw power, and actual tonal crafting.
Oh, and U2... I'd rather listen to Karma Chameleon for an hour on end than listen to an entire U2 album. Karma Chameleon makes me wish I had temporary hearing loss.
