Your favorite man..Origin8 Gary. It'll look even better with racks, cables, and bar tape. I'm surprised I haven't found a decent FD yet..eBay doesn't have very many 28.6 clamp, bottom pull, deore or better front derailleurs. If someone has one to spare shoot me a PM

Hey jdefran, I should have one in the bin for you. I just organized my derailleurs into separate bins, pretty sure I have a few XT triples in there. I'm working on a build for a buddy tomorrow afternoon, I'll take a look and let you know. Hold off on buying anything unless a good deal pops out of the blue, I'll PM you when I have them in hand and let you know what I have.

Peace,

while you're digging around, i'm also looking for an XT FD with a 28.6 clamp.. a double would be fine for me if they made any.

so i have to say the compass tires i put on my Alpina are REALLY nice.. i will compare them to some Paracer Tservs that I have ordered, but wow what a difference good tires make.

Deore DX, LX and XT in 28.6 are getting scarce, especially XT. Plain old Deore work just as well. They're just not too high on cool factor.

Im pretty sure the stem is generic, grabbed it from the coop..

I believe they are planet bike. They're a little large for the tires currently on there but that'll leave options later.

"plain old deore" in the late 80s was the 2nd level mountain group below XT. Deore became Deore DX and then Deore LX, then i think SLX. Then "plain" deore was reintroduced. But by then XTR had become king, with Deore XT being 2nd fiddle. Plain deore is now 4th in the line up but back in the day it was 2nd

there's really not much difference between FDs anyways.. but XT has the cool black parts and logos

New plain Deore came well before SLX, I think.

Right after STX was dropped, IIRC.

Mid to late 1980s, just "plain" Deore was mighty fine. By the 1990s, Shimano brought out the alphabet soup model names.

The toughest ones for me to get straight were the A-groups (Altus, Acera, Alivio). The earlier 200, 300, 500 (LX and GS) etc. were easier, just had to remember that higher was better.

Agreed, LesterOfPuppets you nailed it there, the number system was so much easier!

Ha... frantik that's pretty damn funny but I couldn't agree with you more! What I remember being pissed about (it wasn't just me because I knew a bunch of people that felt the same) the "A-name" series of components were Shimano's first entry into inferior grade goods that were made in Taiwan. Up to that point, high or low end Shimano always carried the "JAPAN" stamp. Many people that I rode with felt like Shimano was on the slide and people started turning back to Campy, Shimano put their finger in the dam by releasing the "silver" XTR line in the early '90's and that swung many back to their favor (especially since it was getting very hard to find Campy triples).

Mid to late 1980s, just "plain" Deore was mighty fine. By the 1990s, Shimano brought out the alphabet soup model names.

Thrifty Bill (wrk101), you are one funny cat! Just about every other page there's some little diddy, like the gem above, that always puts a smile on my face! Thanks man... it's always refreshing, insightful, or both to catch your contributions!

I hope everyone enjoys the weekend! With all the schnizz going on these days, getting to ride and forgot or reflect is just about as good as it gets in my opinion and I'm thankful for each and every mile that I log!!!

Peace'fo'real,

-D-

i chose a threadless stem adapter for my High Plains because it was the lightest option I had in the parts bin.

I agree the Shimano "A" list is anything but....The Deore line is really where its at. I admit to being a SRAM and Suntour fanboy....but oddly most of my bikes now have Shimano Deore, or 600/Ultegra. Shimano just works so well and its readily available.

The stock stem actually worked out really well for me. I have very long legs, long arms and a short torso so the tall short reach stem worked flawlessly for me.

I figured since I finally got the 1-ton walmart knobbies off this thing, I'd post it. No drop bars... yet. Still trying to decide (and I've got plenty of time since I won't be able to justify spending any more money on bike parts for a while )...

Pardon the angle: tiny apartment + 28mm is the widest I can go on the SLR.

1988 Trek 800.
Bottom-of-the-line, sure, but this particular year was one of only a few (for the 800) that had CroMo tubes (main tri) and the ONLY year it seems for a CroMo fork.
Heavy and beat-up, but I see myself having a lot of fun with this one.
Only paid $10 for it last summer on CL.

New tires are Panaracer Pasela TG, 26x1.25. I could see someone thinking they make the bike look silly... I think they make the bike look serious.
