I've used one of those heavy chrome wire things you loop under the rim and over the shoe bolts since about 1971. Still works great!

I use a velcro strap to snug things up and hold them in place; a match stick for a spacer.

That sounds like the simplest/easiest thing for a beginner with no tools too, good idea.
