decent quality 27 wheel?

Is it possible to find a decent quality rear 27' wheel anywhere? I am not looking for anything fancy, just something durable and reliable.

I've visited most of the bike shops in Ottawa, as well as looked online and in the Lambert catalogue, and was not able to find a decent quality 27' wheel. I have an early 70s Peugeot and bought the only 27 wheel available (a cheap Alex) and it started breaking spokes almost as soon as I got it. After looking around, it looks like that cheap Alex is the one and only wheel available, even as a rim.

Suggestions?

Sun Ringle makes nice 27 inch rims. M 13 II is one example.

Sun CR 18 makes a great 27" rim. You can find them on Amazon and/or Ebay. They come with eyelets too and are pretty durable.

Velocity too. My Sun rims are terrific. And from time to time you'll find some nice used Araya 27 wheelsets on eBay.

I have a set of Maillard hubs laced to (I think) either Araya or Rigida 27" rims that are in pretty nice shape, original equipment on a mid 80's Cannondale ST.
It's being converted to 700c so these will be available soon.
PM if interested.

How about converting to 700c? My original '75 Araya were breaking spokes - the LBS's couldn't seem to get it right, and relacing was going to cost me $60 each and I was getting in a hurry. So I went to REI for the cheap $40 ea Alex, and had them tension and true and check the hub tightness. Only a hundred miles on them, but so far so good. And REI if they turn out to be spoke-breaking junk I'll get my money back... Later I'll put much better 700c and change my brakes to match.

BTW - I like my original rims, but they might be stressed funny, and didn't have the hooked bead thingie....so might have been a little risky to continue to run at much over 100 lbs after 37 years....

Bikes: Still a garage full

For about the price of new wheels, just buy a donor bike with a decent 27" wheel set.
