All of these fabulous non-fixie meals invariably bring up that life existential question - "Doth non-fixie cycle to experience alimentazione or doth he experience alimentazione in order to cycle?"

Some questions are better left unanswered. ;)

I had a slice of lardo in Puglia. It was pretty amazing condidering it's fat with just a hint of flesh discolouring the middle. With a glass of Aglianico. :)

Beautiful meals, non-fixie.

Went to Brown's country market and brought home this deep dish apple pie.

Spent a couple of days in Ostbelgien, that part of Belgium where they speak German. Lovely area, and being in the Ardennes during the asparagus season can only lead to one thing: asparagus nach Ardenner Art. Now, does that look C&V or doesn't it?

And of course that famous ham also finds its way into the dish that started this thread, and still my favorite cycling lunch dish: the Strammer Max:

That looks good.
We were 4 weeks in Japan. Here is a picture of the breakfast at a place we stayed.

What a wonderful picture! If any picture ever signified the cultural spread on this forum, it's this one. Love it!

Every time I see this post's title, I'm wondering if you're inviting everyone over. Which you might do, but this would require a plane ticket from me.

Maybe someday!

ryansu 06-01-18 04:36 PM

this thread makes me hungry for some reason

If you're ever in the neighbourhood, let me know and I'll be happy to treat you to an uitsmijter. :)

Meanwhile, on the French coast ...

Lousy riding weather today, so we skipped that bit and went straight on to lunch. What could be more classic than a plate of fruits de mer and a glass of Pouilly-Fumé?

Fantastique!

There are quite a few reasons why my better half and me keep coming back to France with our bikes, and one of them is definitely the food.

This time we're back in south-western France, home of the foie gras, and ...

... Andouillette!!

Lunch today:

Today, a true classic that has disappeared from the menus in my country decades ago: veal kidneys in a Madeira sauce.

How was the andouillette? I had it a few years ago in France, it had an interestinf taste. My wife did not like it, not even the smell.

"Interesting" is a mild way of putting it. They're made of intestines, and as a rule don't leave much to the imagination as to what those were previously used for. :)

This one was actually fairly bland, and as such somewhat disappointing. Still very nice, though.

A couple of days in Stockholm presented me with an opportunity to try a Swedish classic: Toast Skagen. A shrimp salad (mayo, shrimps, horseradish and dill) on toast. Very, very nice.

As I was going through some old phone pics, I found these. Pictures of vintage ship's menus of days long gone. Found them on the walls of the hotel Edward 1er in Monpazier, France, where mrs non-fixie and I stayed on one of our cycling trips. Courtesy of Arjan en Marije Capelle, the proprietors (thanks, guys!).

Thought you might like these, and couldn't find a better thread to post them than my own good ol' lunch thread. :o

January 6, 1934. Dinner aboard the "Heiyo Maru". Apparently she was eastward bound:

To kindle your imagination, this is the Heiyo Maru, pictured in 1930:

From slightly closer to home, in many respects, a 1966 lunch menu from the SS "Maasdam", which probably did quite a few trans-Atlantic crossings between 1952 and 1968 for the Holland-America Line. I'd have wanted the "Relevé":

The "Maasdam" in 1966:

In 1971 things were going downhill, judging by the HAL menu aboard the "Rotterdam". It all seems a bit lower middle class to me. Cheeseburger and fries? Danish Blue? What happened to the Roquefort?

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...9c7d79e69c.jpg

The 1959 "Rotterdam" is a beautiful ship though, and still afloat. Currently berthed in - where else - Rotterdam:

It's harvest season and I picked up a half bushel of green peppers for $5.

Stuffed peppers and an Old Style pilsner. Fresh peasant food.

non-fixie 10-21-19 04:13 PM

Thanks, clubman, for posting those. You can't go wrong with stuffed peppers. One of my neighbors regularly goes hunting in Germany and he supplied me with half a wild boar last week, which is currently in my freezer. Some of that is definitely going to end up in a very similar recipe. :)

clubman 10-21-19 05:01 PM

It's deer season here. Venison for everyone!

iab 10-21-19 05:59 PM

Calf's Brains Sagen carries well in a jersey pocket.

Mmm, mmm.
