Mkeller234, I appreciate the referral to velomine. If I ever lack the time to do it wrk101's way, I'll use velomine. Their prices are amazing even for wheels that have DT spokes.

Raleighsport, I feel like complaining to you that you spent our energy and then announced you're not going to do this anyway. Oh well, I learned a few things.

I have some black CXP22/ Formula hubs that I got off CL for super cheap -- they work fine for my Miyata Triplecross commuter. I think they are likely originally from Velomine or the like.

You been to the new location of the San Fran Bicycle Kitchen in SOMA ?
They have a ton of stuff, at pretty attractive prices.

I think they have a rule that anything they sell has to go on a bike,
so plan on showing up with yours sans wheels.

I feel moronic now! There's also the Re-cyclery even closer to me.

I might show up with the wheels on the bike and they can see exactly why I'm replacing them, or perhaps they can even keep them!

I bought (they haven't shipped yet) the Vuelta Corsa HD wheelset... With a coupon I think I paid one and a quarter...shipping was a little harder... Hopefully they ship soon..reviews sound good...prob ably boat anchors, but I don't care...I pop wheelies and bunny hop and sometimes do endos/bounce up and down on the front tire.

That sounds like a great plan! I often go to the co-op with a load of stuff: framesets, bars, whatever; typically donor bikes, sometimes bikes I got cheap and just wanted to donate (like an Austrian Free Spirit 3 speed). They are more than happy to let me find an item or two that I can use, I might pick up a seat post, something small for sure, just something I can use. Win/win. Right now, my pickup is full for the co-op, that needs to be tomorrow's project.

By all means, let them repurpose your old wheels, that's part of the cycle of reuse. And for those of us fortunate enough to find nice bike stuff cheap, sharing some of it brings good bike karma.

Hey, just letting ya'll know, this is massively useful for me as well. I'm by far nooooot a wheel expert, but was looking for brands that are friendly to BF users and warnings against others. Yes no one "wants to do the research for you," but it's so so so helpful to learn from others. Was looking for new decent wheels for an old Bianchi. So thanks.

I'm glad someone else is getting info too! Hopefully shortly with all the info and good advice/offers I've been given I'll have my new wheelset with the next income of payment!

I will also recommend velomine if you want to buy new. Got a pretty decent set of wheels with tiagra hubs (can't remember the rims, some lower end Mavic) for something like $125 shipped and they came well packaged and round and true and the tension was pretty decent (enough so that I'm going to keep watching them, but didn't feel like fixing the few that were off).

An excellent choice, probably my favorite out there.

Good job. I just picked up a set of Ultegra wheels (the Shimano proprietary WH-R600) for $120. Too bad they're 10-sp only, and I've got nothing in that setup going.....I was just happy to get them, never bothered to look at the freehub for the splines...

....my bad, or a good starting point...

I read through, waiting for you to mention the Ultegras. Price here has gone up 25% since you got those....

I concur with the Shimano R500 suggestion. At first I was very dubious, but the price was attractive. And since the Japanese ground is not heaving with wheelsets as used items, I went for it. I got a mechanic to cut the axle and re-dish the rear wheel so as to fit in my 126 mm stays. A spacer kit was used along with a BMX freewheel to make my old Simplon an SS bike. 18 months later, these wheels have behaved beautifully, and I am using this bike almost daily. They remain as true as the day they went on. Go for it. There are lighter, fancier wheels, but I like these.

Wheels are consumables. They ALL wear out, and usually long before the hubs. The hubs on the R500's are nothing special -- I'd say Shimano's off group 400 grade. But, they are smooth. HINT, as with many Shimano hubs, they come out of the wrapping with the cones too tight. Slack them off and then see how they feel when cinched down on the skewers. Mine came in black with a garish sticker. The sticker can be carefully peeled away. Some pretty serious dudes are using these as training wheels and have many K miles on 'em. Check the reviews.

For classic restorations these wheels are a heresy, but for practical use I see nothing wrong with them. In fact, I am having an affair with modern wheels and have aquired a set of Ultegras for my Woodrup build.

Well I got the wheelset for a song as far as I am concerned. They are indeed tricolor mounted to mavic open 4 cd's, they spin pretty damn smooth and need only minor truing (read as anal retentive). Cassette/tubes/rim tape/tires/skewers included, the tires are trash but new ones come wednesday.

That's just another advantage of used. Almost every used set I have picked up has come with tires, tubes, skewers, cassette, tape. At least half the time, the tires are decent to good. Even though you have to toss the tires, the rest of those bits have some value.

And I consider it just another habit that is "green". Recycle, reuse, and save some cash. What's not to like?

The way I'm looking at it, I pretty much got a free wheelset when I consider the math on everything. So especially what's not to like?
