danscomp (you have to call them via a phone order) gives a slightly better deal than 'childhood dreams' on ebay. at least, that's been my experience.

i haven't tried lee. what's he charge for db spokes and shipping?

i just received some sapim db spokes from danscomp. they're $0.40/ea with nipples, but they charge almost $10 for shipping. 72 spokes cost me $38.00.

i've been real happy with db sapims.

Anybody had any recent tales of horror (or just disappointment) with Sapim spokes breaking?
I have used Sapims and been quite happy with them, but...a friend had some really bad luck with a recent wheel build (from a shop who has sold A LOT of Sapim spokes over the many years they've built wheels...and I've been a customer with no problems, yet).
Repeated breakage...multiple spokes...it's freakish.

I've never had problems with Sapim spokes, the ones I bought from Lee or Dans Comp are all great quality and build up just as good as anything else.

No issues here and I have at least 8 wheels rolling with them, most are on city bikes so they take a beating.

Bought my CXRays at outside outfitters. Best price I found for those expensive things.

I'll put in another vote for Lee. Almost all my wheels now are rolling with his spokes.

More likely the former, i.e. a bad build.

that's a possibility but not likely due to how experienced this shop is, and they have used Sapim spokes exclusively for many years. No telling whether they let some intern take his first crack at wheel-building on this set, but AFAIK the re-do has been a success.

does he have a pool? Chlorine can seriously do a number on stainless steel if stored in close proximity.

Nope, no pool or other source of chlorine. This guy also ca, and has, built his own wheels but decided to let the shop do the whole job due to lack of time. The Sapim spokes broke within the first week of (normal) use and he took the wheels back to complain whereupon they replaced the broken spokes (and I'd assume checked all of them). Then right away he had additional spokes break so he brought the wheels back again...by then he was steamed.
IIRC they were not breaking at the "usual weak spots" (like the heads, J-bend or threads) but at random places.
I didn't hear any more complaints so I reckon they got it all sorted by the 3rd round...but now I'm going to follow up with him since I want to present a complete story, here.
