Bikes: too many or not enough

83 Pinarello with custom paint

I bought this bike from forum member gridplan a while ago. He posted a few pictures in a custom paint thread earlier this year but it is such an exceptional bike I thought I would post a few more. I made a few changes - black bar tape and cables, removed black anodizing from stem, redid some paint infill in gold to match frame accents - but the credit for the beautiful paint job goes to griplan and CyclArt. I'm pretty sure this is an early 80s model, probably '83. Not sure of actual model, maybe a Super Record Special. It has a "chameleon" paint job that changes color depending on the angle of view. The color changes from a light blue that matches the lugs to a deep purple. Very cool. And a very cool bike. Super Record group with very nice Modolo Master Pro brakes.

Bikes: Enough for now

Eye candy! How did you do the infill? And do you still ride it or just hang it on the wall?

Looks like Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci(spiritually) had a hand in painting that beautiful Italian master piece!

I am generally not a fan of Cyclart and even less often of custom paint. This bike is well thought out and attractive.
Quite a bit of effort to create the custom graphics which may have been done all with paint.
Your rework improves the bike quite a bit, I am sure it cost Gridplan a handsome sum coming out of the paint shop.
You won't see another like this.

Please explain. Except for the too-modern C on my downtube decals, everyone seems to like my Capo.

I do the infill by painting "within the lines" as carefully as I can, then wiping away the excess with a paper towel or q-tip dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits.

I just finished working on it and took it for a short ride yesterday. It rides very nice. It is a bit small for me but has a long steerer tube with a large spacer so the bars are higher than they normally would be which helps with my bad back. It probably won't get ridden too much but I should be able to get out on it at least a few times a year. I need to seriously get on selling some bikes next spring as I have too many to ride even a few times a year right now.

I only just noticed that you are the guy that recently put his collection on velospace... I was the guy drooling all over his ipad on the Zeus (smiley). Sorry, was looking more at the bike than the nick.

On my not a Cyclart fan: Basically it comes down to business practices foremost. Which have been outlined on the C&V forum a few times with issue repeat. That and while some projects seem to get great attention, others look rushed and appear to endure less well. The double sided coin of insisting to place that painted by transfer on a frame.

OK. How do they do that "chameleon" paint? Anybody know? And, did you do the lug lining too, BD63? If so, outstanding job.

Very interesting treatment on the shift levers too.

I have three CyclArt repaints. This one is superb. One is real crap with it being obvious that the prep work was really neglected. The other is alright.

Oh and I bought all three of these as repaints. I have never interacted with CyclArt directly.

No the lining was done by CyclArt, by Ruth A. in fact since her name is on the CyclArt id/logo. Very well done. I did the paint infill on the stem, seatpost, levers and chainring.

Hi auchencrow, I saw from your posts you own (or owned) a 1995 Marin Pine Mountain. I do as well, what a solid and light bike!

I unfortunately have not reached enough posts to send you a PM, so maybe you'll find this here...

Have you been able to find any good-matching touch-up paint for the frame? Mine's starting to rust in a couple of places where the paint's been chipped or scratched. Marin doesn't offer any (for any of their bikes), so I'm looking at the secondary market. If you've had any success, please let me know! I'm getting antsy about it with the upcoming winter just ahead and don't want to resort to (for money and nostalgic reasons) powdercoating.

Oh, almost forgot...bottom bracket. Do you know the manufacturer and correct removal tools?

Thanks!

Wow, this is officially my favorite bike. That paint looks beautiful and the parts are perfect. Hold on to that one.

Exactly what I was thinking. But not in a forced way. More like the bike took some really good acid. I'm on the fence about the hoods, but wow, what a head turner.
