I have tried them...I think they make sense for some purposes, but I think, for me, I'm fine with LEDs.

Jimmuller - great post and an interesting perspective. I think I'm leaving everything as is, at least for a good bit. I rode the bike into work this morning...quick easy ride. Enjoyable...I need to adjust the bar position a LOT.

No rolling or fraying. The shellac keeps everthing stable.

I use Tressostar, roll from the bottom up, and use a little wood glue to secure the top of the tape (on the underside of the bar, where it's not visible).

I vote for white tape as well.

No. It would be most appropriate in my opinion.

Also if you ride it, the white tape will have patina to match soon enough.

Yep, that was my point. In a few rides it will look like it's been on there for years.

I think shellacked brown might come out very dark and muddy, Aaron. You could try a subtly tinted white or lighter color, for that "vintage" look;


But I vote for black Newbaum's.

I'll give it some thought...I already have 2 rolls of the brown cloth. I could probably swap them, but I'm just not seeing how white ends up good here.

You need moar pix? Draw your own opinions. It's just cloth and it's easy to replace especially with non-aero levers so put something on there and change it later.

Colonel is right. Go with the brown and you can always change it if you don't like it.

I suspect shellac-ed brown is going to come out almost black Aaron. Go for it. Probably look great.

Your bike is repainted but that orange (or close to this) WAS a Cinelli colour, if it was mine that would be the colour it would get painted if I refinished it. If you are going to leave it as is I would probably not refinish the badge, but since there is no paint left on it, I would if I refinished it. I have seen the badges go for almost $400 so I would keep an eye on it...

Yeah...the fenders on this are KILLER! I sort of feel like having the badge restored would ruin its originality.

On the repaint, orange is my favorite color, but, for me, nothing sings Cinelli like their rose/salmon pink.

I love orange, it is my fave colour,but I agree that the best Cinelli colour is the rose/salmon like on CdM's bikes. I have also seen the occasional Colnago Super with the same colour, beautiful.

If you want a "brownish" color, white Newbaums w/ amber shellac. I will get you a pic when I get home.

I was wondering what you might use for a reference if you go the salmon/rose, or just wing it. Don't suppose there's a number for that amazing color. Using a touch up paint right now called "dusty rose pearl", which is pretty close if memory serves.
You going to have to have CTM send you one of his bikes to get a perfect match.

Me, I'd paint it orange. But not quite such a "hot" orange as is extant now.

Thank you, KAS. Truth be told, I posted that because I didn't have any clear thoughts of my own. Except for the Masi which certainly needed repainting I've never had a bike for which the question mattered. I certainly don't have the skill (or the time to practice) to do it myself. However I have a few ideas do now.

Whether you spiffy up the headbadge depends on what else you do with the bike, whether you intend to paint or "restore" it. If you intend to paint it (not such a bad idea if vjp is correct that it already is a repaint), then by all means do the headbadge too. But it might be really cool to do just the headbadge, a sort of personal statement about the bike's inner beauty.

Fender - that brown looks great, maybe I'll exchange the tape.

Root - maybe I can sneak into cdm's garage and take a paint chip.


Jm - good idea for down the road.

2 rides on the Cinelli and the rear valve felt rough. 5 miles in, it tore. $80 for made in Thailand, poor quality control. I with there were better tubular options in wider tires!

They should be covered under warranty since you bought them new. Have a pic? What exactly happened with the valve?

You can't hate on Thai tires, man, there are few other options.
