How exactly do I service this bottom bracket?

Working on an 89 Schwinn Le Tour, and I took apart the bottom bracket for bearing replacement/lube, and found this...

Any idea how I can replace the bearings in this type of cup?

If you really need new ball bearings, replace the whole thing with a UN unit for $15-$25.

True; I am fixing this bike up for a friend, so I don't mind doing a bit of work. Figured I would try and salvage this before going with an entirely new piece.

Going to be tough to remove that retainer without bending it. Are the bearings shot? Pack it full of grease and install it?

Brake Parts cleaner will take out any gunk, and then just repack

That retainer will just pop out. then service like normal. You can reuse the retainer or not, it wont affect anything. I've seen these on at least 3 different mid to late 80's Schwinns that I have flipped. I think these came prelubed with retainer for easy assembly when new.

Bikes: Raleigh Supercourse

I serviced a bottom bracket like this a while back. If memory serves me, I was able to pop the bearings out with a small screw driver without removing the retainer.

I usually just spray simple green on the bearings & wipe them down until they are clean.

+1
why replace them? Clean it out with break cleaner/let it soak in solvent. Rinse it well, let dry, pack, reinstall.

If you feel so inclined to replace the BB's once you remove the Hatta retaining ring, just go to your LBS and ask for two (2) # 23 Bottom Bracket Bearings, and drop them in.

If the BB's aren't shot or the spindle isn't worn, just re-lube & install.
