A friend's Rivendel suffered a broken chainsaw, one trip to the welder and $18.00 later he was back on the road. If its steel, not a major problem

Actually, yes, it might be covered. See what a Bianchi dealer says. They may replace it with something even nicer. They may not supply the labor to shift everything over, but that's not a problem for you.

I am sort of hoping that Bianchi will come through with something but that would be bittersweet as I would love this for the wall.

As for how Who is to say. I did take a nasty spill on her back in '93 that ruined the back wheel, knapsack, shorts and jersey that may have something. Years of commuting, a short attempt at cyclocross...

I am not smitty nor ever trained in the arts of metalurgy (you know somebody better come across with where that statment is paraphrased from one day) anyway It appears it had been cracked for some time and finally broken but when?

Before I hug her back up I took a short look at the BB area and everything seems fine there but it seems there is a crack brewing on the other side too.

Cyclocross is never a good idea IMO. I'd leave that part out of your cajoling Bianchi.

+1 Probably faster than warranty to take it to a local builder, possibly even cheaper if Bianchi would want you to pay for shipping the frame.

That's very sad. I'm really sorry... But I think that's still repairable. Some of the paint will have to go too, but that could also be fixed.

bikes where there isn't a lot of overlap between the seat stay and seat tube often have this problem. I have often wondered if some of them have seat stays meant for the next size down frame. This joint isn't heavily loaded, but it gets enough of a load that if the joint is weak and there is an engraved cap it will break eventually.

I've seen people sister in a little bit larger tube to reinforce that location. Looks funky, but a full repair would cost far more than that bike is worth.

My thoughts immediately upon seeing it.

Or make certain one of your upcoming trucking trips takes you up I-91 in VT. Frank can fix that quicker than we can blink. He'll be careful with a minimum amount of paint disruption. Then sand and repaint yourself.

Go easy BG, you know, life, lemons, and lemonade, etc!

BTW, are you only doing local trucking now? When did your location change?

That bites BG, as I am sure you have screamed several times today. I'd be the next to say that Frank would be my first choice if he will do the repair. After cocktail hour is over if you can still manage to write you should write down your options and what the approx. cost might be so you can begin to decide what to do.

OK I am think I am past the shock, anger and denial phase so now it is on to replacement phase!!

I really need to replace this like I need a hole in my head though. Fixing it is an idea and I may take a run at it with Bishop in a few weeks, but for a Sort of no name Tange (like flange) DB main frame with mangalloy stays, it may not be worth the effort.

The real funny thing is that I just sold the other frame I had. Also there was a '87 Brava with the same frame on my local CL last fall I likely could have gotten for $175 or so with some 105 bits.

I think since there is a hole in the rack I might fillit with something funky like a Milano if I can find a tall one.

^ Me too!!

I am refreshing my google searches/crawlers, but I have a problem. I don't know what Shogun models came with triple triangles. Just using Shogun I will get too many replies. Did both the Katana and Samuri use triple triangles?

we fixed this just 2 weeks ago- turned out perfect,
TIG welded with stainless, with very careful control of the heat not to effect the brazing.
it was a sweet frame and well worth fixing it.

A break like that leaves a story, sometimes to the level of root cause. If it has been broken for awhile and the two ends rubbed out the finish to a smooth finish, no story except that its been broken long enough to erase the evidence of the type of failure. My first suspicion is a void in the part (quality is not known as a positive attribute with parts sourced from west of the Japanese Islands) that was stressed in the accident to the point of initial failure. Continuing to ride it allowed the failure to propigate until seperation. That story could be there, in the break, or not. Replacement is the expectation! Good luck.

Not much of a mystery here, there just wasn't enough material in the seat stay attachment area. Seen this type of failure too many times. Stress risers are everywhere, no need for bad parts. If the crack didn't start from one of the letters on the seat stay cap I would be very surprised. Lots of factory bikes have had this flaw, I'm going to speculate that since steel bikes are back in fashion that it's going to start happening again.
