Vintage Modolo Cantilevers

I'm thinking of picking these up for $100 plus shipping. Yes they are on ebay and you can go buy them before I make a decision and laugh at my stupidity for not pulling the trigger, but you will save me from another frivolous bike part purchase.

Are they worth the $100 in your estimation? They look pretty sweet, and with some replacement adjustable toe in pads I think I'd have some pretty nice vintage brakes... or do you think they are going to suck?

THoughts?

I like the weird hanger with interrupted straddle wire, but maybe it is a flawed system?

Of course as soon as I post this it occurs to me that velo-orange is likely to offer something better for less. Their mark 3 wide profile cantilever set is only $90. But the modolos are very cool and period appropriate if that is your thing.

Look like re-branded Mafacs to me, and based on how well Mafacs have worked for me (not well) I'd spent (far less) money on some nice Japanese cantis and be happy.

Bikes: Enough for now

Like most canti's, these are probably going to frustrate the red bloodcells out of you when installing and adjusting. But I say, they are cool! I have not seen similar Mafacs, but I have only been looking for a set of Mafacs for a couple of months now to complete my CM cyclocross. These look the part and with a set of Modolo levers you will have purchased a slice of happiness to compensate the adjusment annoyance...

If I had a hundred dollars to spare, I would buy those. I am building my Concorde Cross bike right now and would love a set of Italian cantilever brakes. The Concorde is looking good. A few more hours and it will be road ready. Of course, it is Spring and I have been busier than two flies on a pig's butt this year.

Mafac cantilevers utilized different "wide stance" geometry, these are medium angle cantilever design. Interstingly, 4za (Ridley) brand currently makes/sells CX cantilevers that are almost an exact clone to these Modolos, they were definitly ahead of thier time!

there was more than one Mafac: the Tandem was the wide-set, the Criterium was somewhat shorter-armed (but similar) and then there was the short Jacky which was closer (but no clone) to these Modolos.
I was more referring to the construction technique, which is a page ripped right from the Mafac manual: big bronze bushing and stamped aluminum plates forming the arms.
Anybody know for sure if they were made in Italy or France?

I've seen Gipiemme and Campy cantis on cyclocross bikes of that guy in Switzerland (Speedbicycles) that do look like a direct copy from the Mafac Criteriums, but these look more authentic design-wise. So maybe those copy-like ones are made in France on Italian order, but I think Modolo designed and made these themselves. Even though the technical features are very similar, but on most of their brakes/levers the technical part is same as on any other manufacturer's (except maybe Modolo brifters).
