Picked up a sekine today shimano 600 shifters and derailers dia compe brake rear missing first white one Ive ever seen. I through it in my p/u hurried home put a nice set of wheels on it WD 40 on the chain and anything else that moves Than I test rode it. What a bike, man this thing was made for me. Id say mid 70s SR cranks. WHAT A GREAT DAY. Oh ya cost me zip.

Small catch today... I'm often stopping in at local bike shops when I find the time, and yesterday I found an unusual one... I was out in South-Central LA dropping off a truck load of car parts I sold to someone, and on my way home found "The Bike Doctor". The Doc's a guy who fixes up used bikes for the locals out of his house. Driving by, I saw his lawn sign stating that "the doctor is IN", so I stopped to have a look... The guy must have had 200 bikes of all kinds in his back yard! He's got file cabinets in the yard loaded with all kinds of used parts, and while I couldn't stay long, I saw a chrome '60s Carleton Continental, and an early '80s race bike frame (my size) that I couldn't ID...(very light, nice lugs, strange logo on seatstay caps). The race frame still had some 165mm DA AX aero cranks on it... Anyway, my "catch" was these old metal roller Binda Extra straps in good, usable shape... for $2. I have to go back with some $$. He wanted $50 for the oddball lightweight frame with the DA cranks, and my wallet was empty - he's a "cash only" doctor.

ok, my curiosity is piqued, what was the marking on the
seatstay caps?
Nice straps, two bucks is quite a deal.

Marty, it was something like the letters PRO in an odd script, with a line connecting them. The BB shell and one or two lugs had big W cutouts in them... I seem to remember seeing those seat stay caps before, but don't remember when or where. I'm guessing it was a Japanese build, as the drop-outs were forged Shimano. It looked and felt like a high quality frame; the stay ends and lugs were very nicely finished.

Miyata Pro? Sounds like a deal!

Hmmm... Maybe... I'll go back there in a couple of days & have a good look around. Were they equipped with DA AX in the early '80s?

lotek 04-21-05 11:16 AM

Miyata, interesting bike with an Identity crisis.
Dutch design (Miyata), Built in japan (koga).
good quality but little known.
I've been looking at them lately.
I know it isn't Vintage, but the british press
really like the current Koga/miyatas.

I'm thinking maybe Miyata "Team Pro". Weren't these the blue and gold ones from the early '80s with the full D/A AX set up? I've seen a few of these for sale in the last few years very cheap as the name seems to be stuck with the lower end Miyata mojo for some reason (too many Miyatas in the thrift stores or something). Wish I had the cash to grab the ones back then. You might think about getting this one. I've heard good things about these frames.

Bob, it is light blue with gold head tube... No decals on it, and the paint's pretty bad. Didn't see any dings though. I'll head back over there in a few days. The "doc" said he'll look for more "race bikes" over at a friends house for me...

BobHufford 04-21-05 02:54 PM

Here is a page with pics of a "Team Pro" from the early '80s. Are these the same features yours show? Maybe they're a year or so off? Same colors?

I think is saw a "Team Pro" frame on craigslist in the last month or so with the "Pro" seat stay caps and "M" BB cutouts in pink repaint with a $150 asking price.

There's one on Ebay now (and in another thread)
light blue. Bet the "W" cut out is really an M

nice bikes, very undervalued.

My mom picked up a girl's (about 9) Specialized Rock Hopper (in pink) left over from a rummage sale. I gave it a quick tune-up, and will donate it to the Bike Church for a little karma (I'm hopin' to find some toe clips and straps).

el twe 04-21-05 06:18 PM

Hooray for karma! I donated the bike and as I was looking through the toe clips, the guy said that I could have any used clips. I found some steelies, one of them a little tight, but with a bit of persuading, it works well. They had straps, too, but only new ones (so I had to pay for 'em). Total cost: $3.

That looks like it, except for no decals, and the shifter braze-ons were on the sides of the down tube. Same cut-outs in the lugs! The "doc" says it was all DA AX, and he has some of the other parts around there somewhere... Thanks for helping me ID the thing!

el twe 04-21-05 06:56 PM

Looks like a nice ride, Mr. Other!

Hurling Frootmi 04-21-05 09:30 PM

Picked up a Miyata Seven Ten at the LBS and a hitch mounted Bike Rack for dirt cheap. Smooth riding bike. Mostly original and in really nice shape.

homebuildbloke 04-22-05 08:23 AM

Latest catch eh? Mine's a BSA Golden Century road bike from the mid-fifties. Absolutely original & complete with Campag Gran Sport front & rear mechs & levers. Classic Rendezvous showed one of these Gran Sport front mechs on its "crazy prices" page. It went for about $800 on eBay last year! I won't be breaking this one though. It's too nice. How much? Local rubbish tip find. £5.00 ($10.00). Sweet! Brooky.

mswantak 04-22-05 08:36 AM

Well, that does it! I hate you, too.

:D

Well... I visited "the doc" again today, and brought home the Miyata Pro frame and a really early ('68-'69) Nuovo Record rear derailleur. Both look tired, but the frame has no dings or dents, and the derailleur pivots are nice 'n tight. $60 for both, including the DA AX cranks, BB & 1 pedal, which were on the frame.
Doc says to check back in a week; he's getting another 20 bikes in (used stuff), and he's checking with a friend for racing bikes... Most of the locals want only MTB or BMX... So I'll check back.

But, the one you stop at two weeks from now, may have that cool something... You never know. I'm always looking, and go through "dry spells" before stumbling over something cool. Keep looking..
