I have a 99 Gary Fisher Kaitai that I converted to single speed...I that bike :)

Well, I don't intend on singlespeeding this one - I'm going to leave the 8 speed gearing on it.

I will mount the narrowest, highest-pressure 559 mm slicks I can find though - no reason to have more rolling resistance then nessesary. I might mount a Nitto North-Road to it as well (yes, I know, the eternal English Roadster fanatic MUST have North-Roads).

Motobecane Grand Touring hanging on fence
 

I pulled over into the shade at the top of a hill yesterday and saw a fence covered with old bikes behind the hedge row. This was a hill I climb all the time and you could not see the bikes from the road. Anyway, one of them was this Motobecane Grand Touring, 58cm, black with red head tube, Vitus tubes, 808 I think, but the center number is pretty much wiped out, 43cm chain stays, Motobecane cranks, Weinmann brakes, Normandy hubs, sewups that actually held air when I pumped them up! The Suntour FD is pretty ugly and the RD isn't much better, it has 6 speeds and just guessing I'd say about 13-32 freewheel. Stem mounted Suntour shift levers are ok though. Filthy as you can imagine, but the paint and chrome were in remarkably good shape, considering it was hanging on a fence with cactus growing through the front wheel and Jasmine growing through the rest of it. I like touring bikes and this thing hit me for some reason. The owner gave it to me and now I have to restore it. This is something I have never done. I'll post my pictures tomorrow. Wish me luck.

What else does he have planted on that fence? (Just out of curiosity)

I picked up 2 bikes this weekend. A '75 or earlier Nishiki Kokusai, not ridable shape but easily restorable, and a ?? Motobecane Super Mirage that's really filthy and has a stuck stem (see bicycle mechanics thread). I think they're both around '74, '75 because the Kokusia had a bike license from '75 on it and they both have Suntour GT derailluers. The wheels from the Super Mirage (weinmann rims and normandy hubs) are going on my Schwinn Le Tour III fixed conversion and the pedals onto my wife's Motobecane Mixte. I don't know what I'm going to do with them both after that.

The Kokusai apparently has a full chromo frame, the Super Mirage I don't know, it says on a sticker "1020 tubes stays and forks". The Kokusai frame is perfect except for two really tiny, really bizarre dents in one of the seat stays. The Super Mirage I don't know yet, it's still dirty and I'm trying to get the freaking stem out of it. All in all though, pretty awesome deal for $25 apiece.

Bicycle fence
 

Mostly rust in bicycle forms. There was one fairly nice cruiser, but I was so excited about the Moto that I didn't even look at the other bike. Hmmm

Here are the pics of the 73 RRA I picked up. I didn't get pics before I left for my weekend vacation. On the way up I decided I was making good time and would stop by some thrift stores. There are 3 right off the highway right by each other. The first one I stopped at has the bikes outside in front of the store. It was the first thing I noticed even at a distance. I got closer and read Trek down the seattube. I bought the bike ($25), and eventually when I got home looked up the serial number. It is an 81' Trek 410 in a 24" size frame. It has Suntour components, 27" rims with tires/tubes that are in great shape, leather seat, and the frame is Ishiwata 022 tubing.

Oh. My. God. Again. I went and picked up the four bikes described above last night, and I've done well. The TT bike turns out to be an Ascoli, rather than a Bates, but overall, everything is better than described. Even the little Raleigh I paid $15 for has Campy hubs..

See my thread below to help me correctly identify and describe these babies. They should pay for me to complete my street fix, buy a lower cost track bike, get the wheels trued on my Gazelle, and still put away plenty....

'65 Moulton 4spd
 

My find today at the local area garage sale. 1965 Moulton with the front and rear suspension like the original Mini had. Sturmey F.P. hub. It was owned by my best customer when I worked at the Goodwill around the corner. She knew I worked on bikes, but would never sell it to me. As I cruised around the neighborhood, I saw it sitting out. Jumped two curbs to run over and get it for $40. Looks like my luck for the season is used up. Pics coming tonight.

Royce Union Sutton-Supreme (Nice Shimano 500 centerpulls - rather shocked at the presense of self-extractor bolts on the cheap crankset though, probably part of Shimano's "trickle up" nonsense)

those pueger's are nice, just watch out for the F.A.G bottom bracket. It's plastic and french made. If you're not careful you can tear it apart easily when tearing down the bike.

I did note the odd lockring - no wonder, it is delrin! What threading does this thing have? I intend to replace it straight off.

pretty sure it has standard british ISO threading, again be careful removing the BB. You can google it for the proper tool, and maybe get the threading and removal directions that way. I ended up taking a drill to it after messing up on side of the cups. It was very stubborn for derlin. If it still spins OK maybe just leave it in there. After removal on my ('87) peugeot I was able to thread a suntour BB in there with ISO threading. Your's look a little older though

Sure enough, it's ISO (marked BSA, 1.37X24tpi). Didn't realize that Peugeot smartened up once and for all and finally got around to using English BB threading.

Would the Sheldon bolt-type extractor tool damage the BB? That's what I figured on using.

It still spins like new, but I don't like the idea of a plastic BB just waiting to shatter into a thousand pieces while I'm giving the crankset 210 pounds of sheer, flat-out hell.

My good fortune continues. I was perusing CL today, and came upon the ad below that was posted mid-day Sunday. I figured that a free bike was long gone, but shot him an email anyway. To my surprize, I got a call from the fellow in the afternoon, and arranged to collect the bike after work.

When I got there, he handed over a near-new garage queen. A dusty but almost unused 23" 1983 Nishiki Olympic Royale 10 speed. CroMo frame with RD hanger, silver with black pin-striping around the lugs. Toe-clips, Suntour bar-cons, drivetrain, and dropouts. Weinmann 610 centerpulls and Weinmann wheels with QR front hub. Cyclepro Kevlar tires, good condition with good tubes. All I need to do is replace the rotted cloth tape and wipe the spider eggs off the spokes and such.

Free, 5 miles from my house, and my size. A nice combo.......:D

This is an older bike, basically in good condition but will need to have the gears adjusted to work correctly. The frame is on the small side and heavy by today's standard. Tires and brakes in good shape, I believe. No charge. email me with phone number to discuss.

Saw this Univega Rover today and thought it might make a good paved trail bike.

It was sold by a LBS (Sticker still on) and has lots of braze ons for brakes, bottles and racks. Says Chromalloy.

No, an LBS I've boycotted has been trying to buy back my buisness. Hell, I'm enjoying this new "dump 'em" setup even better then going to the shop - doesn't cost me anything, and it comes right to my door!
