Looks like it would need some significant work - a good clean-and-lube at the least, very likely new brake pads, etc. I'd pay $20 if I needed a bike of that style (assuming those wheels are alloy) but if you're not pretty sure you can do the work it'll need, it might turn into a bigger expense than you're expecting...

That bike looks like it needs some serious TLC! I bought one of those once for $20. tuned it up and gave it to my sister in law. It is a decent paved path bike, but for $20 I'd try to find a cleaner example.

But then again, I'm jaded......:D

I picked up a near-new (needs bar tape) 2003 Lemond Nevada City for $200. 853 steel, Sora 8 speed drive train. Entry level, but rides pretty nice!

Actually, just kidding ya! I am glad you've had this good fortune with bikes. Let me know if a complete Campag Record Group and 27" 6 spd cluster wheelset ever falls out of the sky! I'd love to convert my raleigh over to all campag!

I've had months where I've scoured every known source for decent bikes, and came up empty. And then every once in a while, bikes find me - even when I'm not looking for them.

I'm embarrased to say I've left some bikes behind for others to find - they were just too ratty for me to spend time on, and I don't have the space. Nothing good, though....... ;)

+1. I'm in the midst of a dry spell right now. They are what they are. If you're hunting for bikes, it's best not to expect to find anything, nor is it a good idea to actually look for specific things. I suppose it's kinda a zen thing... makes me sound like a hippie. Dear god. Oh crap, my hair is long and I ride a bike for transportation... uh-oh.

...and it's been just the opposite for me. I've had to do some serious spring cleaning in the last week just to fit all the new stuff coming in.

Sorry fellows, had to rub it in ;-)

Now if only some nice 23"-23.5" frames would come my way...hint, hint!

Went to look at an old Merckx today and sadly it had seen better days. Stuck seatpost and stem, wrecked crank arms, flaky paint etc, etc. Price was a bit over 100 $ but when the owner saw the sorry state of affairs he gave it to me. 57 cm cc, headset ok, BB ok, wheels true and spinning smoothly, I done good today

You could help placate the law of karma by remembering your less fortunate brethren who prefer sizes a bit different from yours. :)

Lucky you. The stuff you could take off the bike in 10 minutes is worth the $100.00 he was asking. Posts can be unstuck, and paint can be re-done. It's hard to beat free! :)

Thanks for the opinions. I was on the fence. $20 was a little steep and the wheels are steel. Maybe for $5.00

My measly Peugeot PGN10 was $100. A free Eddy Merckx?!?! Geez man, great find! :)

Raleigh Quasar, surely the most 80's of Raleigh road bikes. It's a mid ranger, Reynolds 501 tubing, but proper aero brake levers, reasonable bike, but boy, is it ugly, with ludicrous logos and decals. I paid about $8 for it, because it's my size, and it'll be perfect for the single speed commuter I want to build for London riding. Nobody will want to steal it. This thing will be losing it's derailleurs, one of the chain rings, and the freewheel, and getting a single speed freewheel, and that's about as fancy as the conversion is gonna get. No redishing here, though of course I'll respace the wheel. What I may do is buy a pair of moustache bars for it.

Of course, when I'm done using it in London, I may respray it black, line the lugs in silver, but a Brooks B66 or something else with springs on it, and matching leather bar tape on the moustaches, and have a really sweet looking SS bike, but for now, it's foulness is it's benefit.....

Oh! 23 watchers on the Bates now - hopefully get a bid soon.

Just a postscript on that little 20", 1985 Raleigh Super Course:

I began an attempt to remove the stuck seatpost this afternoon.
2 hours and 20 pounds of sweat later, it was removed, in one piece...both stem and bike ;)

Now for the hard part...the stuck handlebar stem! :eek:

Bought this stuff for 10 bucks Dura-ace front and rear derailers. And 2 Campagnolo front derailers 1 rear and pedals. This good stuff?

10 bucks for that? geez. The rear campy derailleur looks like a 2nd generation c record which
generally sells for $50 and up, the pedals also looke like they're from the same era. Don't know
much about the dura ace but Id say you did really well. . .

I only bought one bike this weekend. I passed up a couple that had an owner that was on drugs. me "You want $100 for that ha ha that is worth $20-30 at most in its current condition." drugged owner "It sold for $900 when it was new." me again "sure it did" and I walked away. But, what I did find is a Raleigh Grand Prix in the jumbo 25" size. It is 2010 steel and has Simplex der. (rear pulleys are gone), Simplex DT shifters, cottered Nervar crank, GB stem, Weinmann center pulls, rear rack, Wrights W3N leather seat, and 27 rims laced to Brampton hubs. The real interesting thing is the rear hub is a flip flop track hub. According to the sticker on the seat tube it was made by R.V Gazelle in Holland. I am not sure of the year, but I did find G72 stamped on the BB spindle. So I am guessing 1972. I paid $20.

Thats nice to hear. I have a question you can probably answer for me all the bikes Ive had where the front derailer fits on the down tube they have a clamp or something to hold it there am I missing this ?

Those front derailleurs are made for braze on tabs, There are "adapters" that
allow you to use a band on (or clamp on) attachment with braze on FDs.
I'm not sure of those particular models but with older campy (nuovo record) you
could replace fitting on the derailleur with a clamp on.

I also think you did really well. The dura-ace probable says integrated 8-SIS (or something close to that on the arm) see sheldon brown (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/dura-ace.html) about compatability issues. If you have the shifters you are golden if not I might be into purchasing it off you to replace me scratched up DA RD, I'd take the front with it as well. I also would be into buying one of your braze on Campy FD... PM me if you want to sell them. Otherwise.. again.. nice catch!:D
