Any opinions on the machine? Neal |
I believe I've seen a few other Super Tourers with Altenbergers supplied from factory.
It is also very common to see them fitted with aftermarket drops - lightweight touring machines simply didn't catch on back then, and many were converted into road machines. Is the fork crown of the lugged design, or one-piece a-la Professional MK-IV? One piece would have a chromed fork crown top and ends, so it is possible that the paint flaked off between these two spots...or it was a substitute part at the factory...or a later modification by the original owner. Important point: If there was ever a model of Raleigh that you'll find modified more then any other, it's the Super Tourer. To find one that hasn't been tinkered with is a rare sight. -Kurt |
It's a one-piece fork, and it's entirely possible that the paint decided to throw in the towel. The frame has had a hard life.
Luckily, it fell into the right hands. |

Some may not consider this a catch as there will have to be repair work done. But for the price, I think it is a deal. Considering a custom rising sun paint scheme for it. If not, will go with some other color than it is currently. Current plans are Superbe Pro crankset and derailleurs, DiaCompe NGC 400 brakes and DiaCompe aero levers, probably Suntour Sprint hubs with Araya aero rims (possible Superbe hubs), Nitto bars and stem.

I bought a Panasonic Sport today for my cousin who wants a bike. It looks late 80's, shimano sis everything. Should be a good bike for her. Lugged cromo, lighter than my single speed.

Just beware of ever selling it to a die-hard young fixie*. They may chisel off the naughty bits for sex appeal. 3Rensho frames are next to Godly in that crowd. What was the price, by the way, if it's not too brazen to ask? *apologies to die-hard fixed gear enthusiasts who engage in this practice. In my humblest of opinions, it's like cutting the knees off of one of Waterhouse's lovely vixens to make the painting smaller. |
i found some bar tape from the early 90s for 5 euros. cool!

A few weeks ago I was out riding my 1982 Le Tour when I saw a yellow frame set out with the garbage on the curb.
I thought about going to get my truck but the fear of losing my prize was stronger than the pain of wearing the frame home necklace-style. Here she is, a Japanese-built Le Tour on her first half century ride: http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j7.../yelletour.jpg |

Well, I have confirmed the date after the initial finding based on the 1955 Sturmey Archer hub. Serial number T76828 places the frame as October 1955.
Now for the puzzles... How much is original? I am not actually looking to restore it to original, but I am curious. My guess for the model based on the rail on the seat, chrome fenders and lack of a tank and one poor image from an online ad is 1956 Schwinn Corvette. Can anyone confirm this? It looks like the chain guard was painted black, but the underlying color looks the same as the frame... For $10, I think this will serve its purpose well. A frankenbike... Now, does anyone have any high rise ram horn bars... that loop around "10 speed" like. EDIT: Just found a 1956 Corvette for sale on eBay (in very nice shape), and the chain guard is the same style, so it seems to confirm my earlier guess. (I assume that bikes made in late October were for the next model year in 1955/56 as they are now). |
Looks like it could be a Corvette to me. The fenders should be stainless. The rack should be on the front and the seat and pedals are newer. They make fun cruisers -- my Dad has a black '58 three-speed.
http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn/195602.jpg Congrats! Bob |
Thanks for the info, and the ad Bob!
I thought the rack looked a little strange where it is connected to the seat... adjusting seat height changes rack angle. I thought the bracket on the front was for a headlight... and was wondering why it had a rear rack instead of the front like others I see online. I see now that the headlight was mounted higher. :o I also saw a reference to stainless fenders, and realized that the fenders are probably not chrome because there is no rust like there is on the chromed parts. It is interesting to have stainless fenders, but not the fender stays. It is also interesting that the rack is alloy. I wouldn't have expected that from such an old bike. The fenders definitely need some work (dinged up) but it is starting to look like I have a relatively complete Corvette, perhaps only missing the headlight. |

Not a catch of the day today, but it was two years ago. I walked into a Salt Lake City Salvation Army store, walked quickly back to the bike section, and found this. 1971 Schwinn Continental with only garage wear, and red foam grips. I replaced the tires, cables and housings, and re-wrapped the bars. I recently added the whitewalls, which I found at my LBS. The price?? TEN DOLLARS! :D
Unfortunately I cannot post the after pic, they're too big. If I reduce the file size, it's so foggy looking you cannot tell how good it actually looks. |
My catch this week is an eBay arrival: a 1961 Raleigh Lenton Grand Prix. Lots of original equipment, including 27" Dunlop special lightweight rims, GB MkIII brakes, way heavy 49/46 cottered steel crankset, Racelite large flange hubs. It also came with the original Cyclo Benelux mechs, but for now I've set it up as a single speed to get it on the road. Topping things off are Bluemels alloy fenders, a Brooks B66 saddle, and Lux flat bars.

Don't tell me it came with a face cord of firewood too...
|
My catch of the day was a 1983 Univega Gran Rally with full Shimano 600 for $55. It will clean up nicely, and this one is a keeper for me :)

Got them from a neighbor for 25 bucks for both. The Trek was geared when I got it, but I converted it to singlespeed about...an hour ago-the shifters were broken, and cables were cut, so I didnt feel like fixing it). the peugeot is in great condition, and still shifts well, so its staying as is. |

I also applaud your build choice. Though I've never owned one I do believe a 3Rensho built with Superbe would be the height of Japanese road cycling and easily the equal of foreign competitors. |
The TREK 510 is from 1984 based on the decals.
The model1 510 debuted in 84, the 85 decals only say TREK on the downtube, the model number was printed on the chainstay protector. marty |

Not a bike, but picked up a like new Thule trunk mount rack at the Goodwill for 8 bucks. Probably about a 90 dollar rack.

bought this morning for 350 CND, not a steal but a deal.... a pearl coloured 50cm Guerciotti circa 1984 according to the campy super record 172.5mm cranks with dustcaps.... (scratch the BB need from the for trade thread) also included are super record brakes and levers with a bit of road rash on the levers. cinelli bars and stem. super record RD, NR braze on FD, super record headset, Mavic hubs laced to GP4 and wolber tubular with new vittoria Ralley tubulars just mounted by a shop. The rims look the same so I am not to heart broken over the mismatch. Oh and simplex retro friction shifters, no pedals, selle italia atomic saddle and super record 26.8 post which is in rough shape and obviously the wrong size, the seatpost binder is generic but oh well. I now have all the parts to complete my faggin. The fate of the frame is probably for sale as my girlfriend said she'd rather keep her marinoni and her GIOS than trade either for this one.
|
Catch of the day: A fairly scuffed, but still very useable Selle Italia Flite Ti saddle. Price: Zero dollars, zero cents.
(A guy from another department of my agency knows I ride a lot and a couple of weeks ago he emailed me for a recommendation for a new saddle. I said that I have S.I. Flites on two of my bikes and would have them on all of them if I could justify the expense. Coincidence! That's just the one he had on his bike and was looking to replace. He just emailed me to say he remembered our conversation and he'd bought a new saddle, and did I want his old Flite? You bet!) |

I would rate it at least 8 or 9 on a scale of 10 (besides the bar perhaps). And the cost? Well... that's a story apart. I was looking for a beater for my commuting but the bike would stand outside all year (and that means a lot of rain here in Holland) so I was looking for a cheap one on our national ebay (mp). The guy asked 30 euro and lived 2 kilometers away from me so i thaught: what the heck, I'll buy it and let it rain/rust away (no other choice). I bought it and it was in mint condition so my other Peugeot (the purple Ventoux 14) got the dirty job of standing outside all day now and this beauty is staying inside or taken out to tour with in the sun :) Finally a vintage Peugeot (the Ventoux is a '91). Extra info always welcome btw! |
