I believe, unless I'm very much mistaken, and I frequently am, as a member of the lowly starless masses, that this should go in the numbskull of the day thread. Unless you're goin' for irony. In which case I applaud the brilliance. Oh, you crafty crafty mod!

Brian 08-16-06 10:17 PM

It's overpriced by what, $475?

but the one on craigslist isn't one of them. I'm guessing this one should be $5.00 (simply missing the decimal point). :D

Don't be so sure. He says it "Runs great".

I just bought a Raleigh Sport lady's 3 speed...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Item # 320017217132

Kurt (or others),

Any idea of the year? I guess the shifter is the biggest hint on this one until I pick it up...

More info and requests for information likely to follow. :D

I'll guess 1974 or 1975 based on the style of decals, trigger cover, self-adjusting brake levers, and drive-side crank. Good deal for the money.

Here in LA the average asking price for a Varsity is $100. Any sort of Schwinn cruiser goes for $200 or more. It's ridiculous, we got a bunch of hipsters with too much money who are lookin' to buy nostalgia. May work in my favor though cuz I'm thinking of opening a used bike shop.

6spd Simplex shifting system with Peugeot decals on it

Need some extra cleaning but it is in mint condition. I would rate it at least 8 or 9 on a scale of 10 (besides the bar perhaps).

And the cost? Well... that's a story apart. I was looking for a beater for my commuting but the bike would stand outside all year (and that means a lot of rain here in Holland) so I was looking for a cheap one on our national ebay (mp). The guy asked 30 euro and lived 2 kilometers away from me so i thaught: what the heck, I'll buy it and let it rain/rust away (no other choice). I bought it and it was in mint condition so my other Peugeot (the purple Ventoux 14) got the dirty job of standing outside all day now and this beauty is staying inside or taken out to tour with in the sun :)

Finally a vintage Peugeot (the Ventoux is a '91). Extra info always welcome btw!

how long is the top tube? I have an 83 psvn and I've noticed that the seat tubes tend to be longer than the top tubes in the larger sizes.

If nobody here has found this aucton site please take a look. www.propertyroom.com. Under road bikes Miyata 914 listed as a Mialta 9-14 $98 and a nice Univega Gran Tour $10. I have purchased bikes from this site and have been happy. By the way, contrary to what is listed on the site, you can buy individual bikes from the parts listings and have them shipped. You just have to contact them after the auction and let them know. I bought 4 bikes this way (1987 Trek 560, 1977 Letour 12.2, 1975 Schwinn 3pd and 1973 World Voyaguer) total cost w/ shipping under $300. I bought all of them out of the parts listing and if I had kept all of the bikes I "won"it would have been over 30:eek: I have no connection to the site but want others to know about it as I now have about 10 bikes and have to stop:D

I don't know about Panthers, but I think you got a good deal. It looks to be in good shape and I think the twist grip shifter is cool too. I think they overestimated the age by about 20 years, but that is just a gut feel. Something about that bike says early 70's to me... Irt seems like something I would have seen when I was in high school.

TimJ 08-17-06 08:46 PM

Yeah, I'm figuring 60s or 70's too.

Funny, I've been telling a co-worker of mine to post here with his "catch of the day". He picked up that exact same green Peugot for 10$CDN about a month ago. His still has road bars on it and I've ridden it and it is very very nice. The colour is the best part. When I saw the picture at the top of the page, I thought he had finally visited here but changed the bars without telling me. Weird.

leunkstar 08-18-06 03:39 AM

lol.

I'm considering to put a dropbar back on it to bring it back in the old state but it rides so fine like this....

I bought a varsity for $50 the other day looking for a bike to commute to work. It's in really good shape, but I couldn't find any info on it. $50 seemed ok to me, so I got it, is it a total POS??

I think they are worth $50... although you can sometimes find good ones for less.

They are heavy, and obviously have old components, but they would do better on a crash test than most modern bikes. :)

As long as you are happy riding it, it will last longer than you will. Just watch the braking if the rims get wet, as chrome rims get real slick! Other than that, enjoy the bike. If the wheels go bad, consider replacing them with alloy for better wet braking.

Also, if you ever do get the desire for a lighter more modern bike, don't upgrade it, just buy a better bike.

Other than these obvious points, it can be a perfectly nice rider, and if you develop a relationship with her, she'll be faithful for life. ;)
