Yeah baby! A CR list friend who I had bid against for the Sunshine PRO-am hubs I recently scored, was kind enough to point these hubs out to me... I bought the black Sunshine hubs 'cause I figured it unlikely that I'd ever find a set of the black first generation, large flange Dura-Ace hubs.... Now I have the hubs I really wanted to go with my all black, first generation DA group! Anyone know if Shimano offered a first generation seat post before going to the second gen. DA?
Cool hubs: |
the earliest that i have ever seen is the EX grouppo, about 1980...

Catch of the day? Back in early October, Leesburg, VA vintage British/European motorcycle show. Picked up what I thought was a late 70's Raleigh 10-speed, low end bike. Cost me all of four dollars.
Got it home, stripped it down and repainted, got everything working, started riding for the first time in 28 years. THEN, I find out I've bought a 1962 Raleigh Gran Sport. Been picking up the couple of original equipment pieces that were replaced, will build a second set of wheels for serious distance (Campy Record low flanged with Nisi tubular rims), and then restrip it down to go to the original paint scheme. After I find a second bike, of course. Now that I'm back in shape, I'm not stopping. Syke Deranged Few M/C |
Hey Syke, I see you've found us over here. Welcome to Bike Forums (where I'm not too intimidated to post regularly). :)

Yeah, I finally got a few free moments and did a bit of digging.
By the way, did a 32 mile day (personal best over the last 75 days) and I'm feeling it a bit. Just the same, the mileages are starting to pick up and it's getting easier all the time. Syke Deranged Few M/C |
Good news. You'll be blasting me by the time this dumb winter is done.

Not much. Early Shimano Deore MTB mechs (yours if you want em USAZ, see PM) and a Suntour Superbe rear mech, plus a 1962 Schwinn Racer, pretty cool. Also a 26.4 seatpost in GC, always nice for a francophile... right price, just didn't bid against one of the dealers at an auction... he didn't want any of this obvious crapola (the superbe had been badly installed on a Schwinn Le tour, believe it or not, I replaced it with a VGT for him and got the shifting working right, then gave the bike back to him).

Here’s a 1988 Bridgestone 400 mixte I picked up for $10 today at Salvation Army. It looks like it has never been ridden. There’s not even the usual garage dust and such. It looks new except for a tear in the seat (probably from dropping a garden hoe on it!) Pics are a little cloudy... I think my lens was fogging over.

Not exactly a Catch of the Day, but when up in the attic getting the Christmas stuff down I noticed a pair of wheels way off in the corner. Shimano 105 hubs circa 1983, 26 spoke, 3x, with Araya 1.25 alloy rims. Not that exciting, but the freewheel was a virtually unridden 7-speed Suntour. That was worth cleaning up, lubing, and putting on my older bike. Took all the cogs off and made sure that the threads were well greased. Flushing the old and dried lube out of the freewheel took some time, but now it runs great. I have been riding my old bike with a Nashbar 7-speed freewheel and that freewheel is noisy in the two middle cogs. The "new" Suntour freewheel is SWEET - quiet and shifts crisply. Not exactly the gearing I want (It's 13-15-17-19-21-23-26 and I'd rather go more toward a corcob), but it is servicable.
I had forgotten about these wheels. They were off my wife's Bianchi Limited and I put my old wheels on her bike when I built some tubular wheels for myself a LONG time ago. It still had the original tires on the rims, but they are not in good shape. |

Found a couple of goodies today; a pair of nearly new early "patent" 144BCD "Nuovo" Record rings in 42/52. They're so clean, it looks like they were new bike take-offs. Also got this NOS/NIB 1st generation Dura-Ace (Crane) rear derailleur:

Found a pair of Bluemels Populars at one of my LBS today for $20. Here they are, temporarly mounted on my Raleigh Sport Roadster (ex-Gran Sport) to check their fit.
Forgive the mess, and rest assured, the bottom bracket is not being damaged in the vise. Take care, -Kurt |

Catch-as-can for the real McCoy, but I believe SKS has a current line of fenders available under the Bluemels name available across the pond, if I'm not mistaken. The strength and finish of the plastic used on the vintage Bluemels are unmatched, and make any modern Mt. Zefal look like trash. -Kurt |

I found a Univega Sportour at Goodwill today. It is much too small for me but will make a great bike for my youngest son. It is in very nice shape. The components are:
Dia Compe 400 brakes Suntour Cyclone M-II derailleurs Sugino GT cranks Araya rims Original Univega 700 x 20c tires MKS pedals SR Laprade seatpost Sunshine Gyro Master hubs The frame has a sticker that states: Chromoly Double Butted Frame Tubes Mangalight Fork Hi-Tension Stays The frame has Shimano rear dropouts. I didn't get the serial number off it but any ideas, based on the components, on an approximate date? Thanks Joe C. |
The date codes for Sugino cranks and Suntour Derailleurs can be found at vintage-trek,com
I'll make a WAG - 1985. You now have the power to make me look silly. Go for it. ;) |
USA-
I finally got around to checking the date codes for the Univega. The cranks are from 1982 and the brakes are from 1983. You weren't too far off! |
oh, geez. Zorro missed it by a whole year. maybe two! Extra remedial old bicycle catalog homework for him!

probably yes, In Austria manny small bicycle shops are closing or are under new management because of the dominating Sport Superstores. This small shops all had their own bike production or at least assembling of bikes starting in the fiftys. The new managers want to get rid of the "garbage" so they sale old parts and frames in kilo prices (for almost nothing) I still have several nos super champion rims in different colors (polished, black, gold) for this guys. Probably i should wait a few years and exchange for an japanese highlight
