NOT FOR SALE, Louis Garneau Arm Warmers $1. That's all I paid. Sorry they are not for sale, please don't delete my post.

Anyone wanna take bets as to whether or not bianchiriderlon was a crossing guard at some point, hall monitor perhaps and quite possibly a Virgo?

1971 Schwinn Super Sport -- $15 at a local thrift. Not being much of a Schwinn expert, I took it for a Varsity at first (and I was still gonna buy it for $15). A second look showed the Weinmann alloy wheels, GB alloy drops and 'Chrome Molybdenum' decal on the seat tube. From what I've read since I got it home, these were hand-brazed, and not your garden-variety Chicago boat anchor. Seems to be all original, but the Brooks saddle was MIA.

Okay, you Schwinn gurus -- fill me in on this one.

Lucky dog! That's one of the few non-Paramount Schwinns to have. Still not light, with straight gauge tubing and boat anchor parts, but absolutely a fillet-brazed piece of Schwinn coolness! I believe they're a step or two below Paramount in the line. Great find!

While visiting my parent's today, I went through some old boxes of my junk, and found a patch from my very first century ride in 1976. It brought back some great memories. I was 16 years old and the Century was sponsored by the Baltimore Bicycling Club - Hunt Valley Hundred - what a day that was!!

By my scales it comes in at 31 lbs.; not a flyweight, but a good bit lighter than a Varsity. According to the '71 Schwinn catalog, there was a Sports Tourer model with an alloy crank and Campy GT rear derailleur between the Super Sport and the Paramounts.

I'm going to yanking it apart tomorrow, and give it a proper cleaning and overhaul.

They had 'em priced a bit high at 16 bucks, but it was half off day! What's your latest cool find?

I used to have a pair just like that. Mine had aluminum cleats. and a leather "lip" onto which the cleats sat. I wore them for some time, before I "moved" up to some synthetic Patrick shoes - before I discovered the pure joy of clipless. Mind you this was all when God was a boy.

I'll post pics when I get home but last week I got an red 80s Trek 400 from a thrift store for $2.50. It's got some paint chips and such but I plan on touching those up and cleaning up/overhauling the bike, it rides nice.

This is a free bike, saved from the last mile to the landfill. Has anyone ever heard of Rabasa? On the seat tube it says MADE IN SPAIN. I found this on the web: "1922 - DERBI was founded by Simeon Rabasa Singla as a bicycle repair shop in 1922. The shop soon expanded and Mr. Rabasa had to buy new bays to cover the production of bicycles." Anyone have a clue? Thanks, Joe

Hey mswantak - nice ride! Only a year older than mine, but yours is stock! For $15, how can you go wrong? Mine is most definitely a trusty steed.

mswantak 09-19-05 07:41 PM

Yeah, I'm already conniving excuses to keep it and tweak it a little. Picture this: Alloy crankset, Brooks saddle, bar-cons, Suburban fenders, and repainted black with gold decals and striping. Gentleman's Express, I say!

Well, not my cup o' joe, but then again, I don't drink coffee! No, if you'd ride the [blank] out of it like that, more power to you! I'm expecting a dedicated thread sometime soon here...

if anyone knows anything about any of these feel free to chime in. lots of small frames. all are in pretty bad shape, the only one that might be restorable to original without repainting the frame, respoking the wheels, and replacing a lot of rusted pieces is the green schwinn.

most are going to be parted out for other bikes (or consolidated) if any of these just screams to you "restore!" or "i must have that bike!" be sure to let me know, or even if you need some pieces for your own restoration, i'll see what i can do.

Wow - starting a reef, are we? :D

USAZorro 09-20-05 01:10 AM

I'm debating whether the Free Spirit, or the Western Flyer is the ugliest of the lot. ;)
It looks like the Western Flyer may have a decent leather saddle on it - which alone would be worth the $15.00 (plus gas$) paid for this "collection".

A small catch today - A pair of unused Shimano SPD 515 clipless pedals for $1.99 at the local thrift.

Oh, and a big "Thank You" to mswantak for not seeing them before I did...... :D

wearyourtruth: That granny bike (White's Performer) is the pick of the litter! Although the split top tube is pretty neat on that free spirit, never saw such a design before. I'd convert that thing into a cruiser!
Actually, if you're gonna part out the granny bike I'd love those handlegrips and the seat (is it comfy?) for a bike ive got.. even the fenders would be nice!

Walking through the neighborhood this afternoon, I saw a neglected-looking Motobecane Mirage out with the trash.
I called through the open door of the house, and asked the owner if I could take it. I just took it 'cause it was a decent 62cm frame for another fixie project. Hard to pass up any bike my size.

Sammyboy 09-23-05 02:01 AM

Ok, so a proper score today. I'll post pics soon of my Gazelle that I got for £30 ($50?) from ebay, and I've pulled various cheapies out of hedges to use for choppers, or for my kid, but this is a PROPER score.

No pics yet, cos I can't pick them up til tomorrow, but 2 Moulton Minis for £7 ($10), from the local ad paper. Apparently they've been standing a while, and have somewhat rusty rims, but it sounds like they're viable. One is a three speed, and any 2 Moultons for £7 seems like a hell of a bargain, since even total sheds go for £30 on ebay.

After speaking again to the guy, even the rims aren't rusty. Sounds like a clean up and some tyres, and these things'll be worth a lot more than £7!
