Wide or wider

My Passage project is ready to go, except for fenders. After a lot of reading I have decided on the smooth Tanaka alloy fenders. The clearances will allow anything up to 45mm. From my research it seems 40mm is plenty to cover the Kenda K40s which are a measured 33mm wide. My question is do I gain anything in looks or functionality by using the larger size?

The ability to use wider tires, should the mood strike you.

Personally, you have a bike like a Passage with something like a 105 wheelbase- take advantage of it and roll with 27x 1 1/4 or 32s.

I'd go with a smaller fender size. I'm using an extra large 50mm wide fender with a 700x38 tire and the tires become hidden and anemic looking. The size differential between a 28mm wide and a 45mm wide fender is excessive. You won't like the result. I'd target tire size plus 5 to 10mm equals fender size.

33mm, not 28

Good point. These 27x1-3/8 K40's are 33mm wide fully inflated, not 28. (Preview is my friend)

I think it was too early for me to be writing anything. At that hour I should just focus on feeding the cats.

I'd go wider. Better coverage, and a more "classic" look. My 650b conversion has 38mm (Soma B-Line: mmmmm...) tires and 52mm fenders (VO Zeppelins) and looks "just right" to my eye.
