The Bern Brentwood is listed in the REI outlet for $69.73 and not in anything near my size. If I could find it for around $30 I'll order right away. El Cerrito is the only city in California with an ordinance that requires adults to wear a helmet and I ride through there often.
It's also that I'm thinking that my reactions are not as quick as they used to be. I crashed my truck yesterday.

I didn't find the movie that offensive. Not a classic or something I'd seek out to watch again, but it made for a fun movie date at the cheap theater. I didn't walk out disgusted or embarassed for the movie-makers like I did after Hobbit II of III the other night.
The Basic Bern is one of the least ugly hardshell mushrooms. The Nutcase has some nice graphics.
To me, a helmet should be light, comfortable, and have good ventilation. That's all I care about. I'd rather wear nothing but the social stigma is getting so strong and the mindless peer-pressure and many events demanding a helmet that I only put it on to make other people happy and get their oppressive safety-nazi granny ninnyness off of my back. As far as I'm concerned one cheap beer cooler foam hat is as good as another except for the weight/comfort/ventilation. No silly styrofoam talisman is going to be as comfortable as the old-school cycling cap.
progress...

Vents.
If you live in a warm climate and ride hard, you need vents. This is an area where I recommend function before form. Fashion helmets don't do you any good, if you don't want to wear them. I barely notice that I'm wearing a well-fitted, well-vented helmet...
That being said, I've thought about a Bern, or something similar, as a winter helmet.
As much as I hate Specialized, I do enjoy their Echelon helmet. I really enjoy the older version of this:

And, the only good part of long flights to Europe or Asia is that you get to catch up on bad movies. A perfect guilty pleasure. I'd never go to the theater to see something like Premium Rush, but I enjoyed it on a plane

It turns out that backcountry.com only has yellow in XL. You don't find that out until you try to put it in your cart.
This is one bike purchase that my wife is all for. She says she doesn't want to have to take care of a vegetable.

Grand Bois, really sorry to hear about your truck, hope your doing ok?
I'll throw in my vote for "Nutcase" helmets! I too was blessed with a large head, the XL Nutcase fits me really well.
Cheers,
Chris

Sorry about the truck!

I don't think El Cerrito was enforcing it anyway.
The truck is driveable. I just had to cut off the end of the bumper to get it off of the tire. It's 22 years old, but I have full coverage with a low deductible. It's not finished yet.

I don't blame your wife a bit. Although…that said… there are no guarantees of course. This thread made me think of Michael Schumacher.
Poor fellow. All those thousands of laps in an F1 car going up to 200 mph +, and he takes himself out on a rock. I'm rooting for him. But mostly hoping for his wife and kids.
Good luck with the helmet search, GB. I think Nutcase may be a good option too.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.
I'm not too big on the mushroom look, either. It looks like a good choice for winter riders who want to keep their heads warm. I have the opposite problem, as anything over 65 degrees feels 'too hot for helmets' to me and my head gets pretty well soaked from sweat. Still, I keep it on, unless I'm doing a grueling climb.
In two of the four cycle crashes I've been in during my adult life, my Magic Styrofoam Talisman saved my bean from getting pretty well klonkered. Now if I only had a way of saving my lily-white hide from all that nasty road rash
I still hate having to wear a helmet, but I feel I must. And it has absolutely nothing to do with peer group pressure.

Even a bad movie isn't that bad with good popcorn (or real Chicago stuffed Pizza) and that magic FF button on the remote control if things get too dry or stupid.

I have a Bern Watts that I use with their winter liner for winter biking here in Minnesota. Great helmet, as are most any they make. Would recommend them.
Outside of winter, I use a Giro Feature for both mtb and anywhere else I feel I need a helmet. Visor, solid ventilation, clearance for larger sunglasses; all-around sound helmet.
Both were purchased at REI and were reasonable ~$60 (or less if you have discounts/rebates). I like something that has some back of the head protection and somewhere between looking not looking like goofball or trying too hard.

I wouldn't have broached the subject had it not already been done. I regularly ride in temps of over 100 degrees and high humidity. The Giro Rift helmet I currently use is hardly noticeable. Extremely good ventilation. And extremely comfortable. A helmet liner would be nice though.
And, while living in Belize, I had the opportunity on two occasions, to see first hand what a human head looks like after hitting the pavement from the distance of a bicycle seat. Of course there was the added velocity of being struck from behind.

I didn't think Premium Rush was bad. It wasn't great, and there were a couple seriously stupid parts, but movies about bicycles don't come around every year so I'll take what I can get.
Regarding helmets, I've had good luck with a cheap black "Schwinn" one from Walmart. Fits great, is light, doesn't give me grief.
??? Is it a collector or something? Once a car's value drops below a few grand I always cut it down to liability only. But I guess if you're going around hitting things...
