Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for about a month and just joined up this month in case I needed to ask a question. The forum has helped me find a lot of answers and for that I'm very grateful! Thank you guys (and girls!)

I just recently inherited a 1986 Fuji Sagres from my brother... it was hanging in his garage for the last 20 years. In any case, I decided that I should overhaul the bike and replace tires, etc before riding it. As it turns out I had to buy some freewheel removal tools. No problem there and I got the freewheel overhauled tonight. I want to do the axles and crank bearings but not sure which tools to buy... or which tools will fit correctly. I wouldn't want to buy the wrong tools!

Since I can't find detailed specs on the bike, can anyone tell me if the Park Tool CWP-7 will do the job to pull the cranks? Will the tool fit fine on the Sugino threads, or should I use a different tool? Also, to get the axles off the hubs, it looks like I need a set of thin wrenches... but, I don't know what size (in millimeters). Can someone please tell me what size I should purchase?

Thanks in advance for any help! Also, if any other tools are recommended, please let me know. Just so you know, I'm not planning to overhaul bikes for a living, I just need the bare minimum tools to get this one bike running.

Get a ccp-22 or Pedro's, which is a little more robust. The handle makes it easier. Also, invest in a can of PB blaster and shoot the threads on the BB cup. Remember drive side is righty loosy. Also:

Parts are not unique to a Fuji, and who knows if the parts are all original anyway? Chasing after original specs is a waste of time. I've never seen bike manufacturers list such information, even on their brand new stuff. Realize Fuji made the frame on your bike, everything else was bought from the same suppliers that sold to all of the other bike manufacturers.


You are going to need several cone wrench sizes, the cheap route is to get the stamped ones that are two sizes on one end and another two sizes on the other ($3 or less on fleece bay). They are pretty flimsy but work OK. Tools are a personal choice, myself, I love tools, so I am always looking for deals on good ones used and avoid the flimsy ones. But for occasional use, it would be OK. You can always use a 17mm socket for the outer large nut (or 16 if yours is that size).

You are also going to need some bottom bracket tools. There are several there depending on the design of your bottom bracket. HCW-4 as a minimum, HCW-11 is sometimes needed. Channel locks can work on the lock ring, but a good lock ring wrench is a better choice.

Between the front and rear axles, you could have anything between 13mm and 17mm. I would add 14 and 16 to OJ's list above.

Thanks for the help! The Sagres is all original as my brother bought it brand new in 1986 and never modded it. In any case, I did more research on the tools on-line and ended up just going to a local bike shop in the end. I bought the recommended CCP-22 (they didn't carry Pedros), and also a 15/16mm combo cone wrench (bought this blind as I had no idea what size to buy... only knew it was larger than 13mm). I was able to overhaul the BB and the axles as intended as I already had all the rest of the tools I needed. Just need to take care of re-wrapping the handlebar with new tape, and changing up the brake pads. Already got new 27 x 1 1/4" Gator Hardshells installed for wheels. Just FYI for the future... the "stock" axles require a 13mm cone wrench for the front, and 15mm for the back.
