Bikes: Yes, please.

Spotted this Barale a couple of days ago at Eroica Germania.

Apparently the brand name was just one letter too long for the bike's previous owner.

Barale was on the very extensive list of names MauriceMoss had posted, but since we now have PIX...per my completely arbitrary "rules" this now becomes an official addition to "the List" at number 57.

BTW it's getting hard to find but "the List" always lives in post number 71 and is updated whenever I get to it...

Bikes: Felt VR (All day Road), Fiftyone Assassin (Gravel) '79 Alan Super Record (Sunny Day Show-Off Bike)

Wasn't born an Alan

Hi there, thanks for this wonderful thread. I've just picked up my first Alan and seem to have potentially found another rebadge.

The first clue was that the frame looks like a late 70s model, but the world champs frame sticker went up to '85. Now I've got my hands on it, the frame stamp does indeed indicate 1979 and I can see through the paint fade that it wasn't born an Alan! It also doesn't seem to have Alan forks, if anyone can offer an ID on them that would be great, they have 'LG' embossed on the dropout as that's the only clue I can find.

I figure 'Bolley' is French, and that would make sense of the dress kit on the bike (simplex gears, maillard freehub, mavic hubs) but some initial searching doesn't seem to reveal anything I can latch on to (beyond a professional rider called Serge Bolley, whose career seems to have finished in 1972, so the dates don't really line up so well)

Unfortunately I have to rack up 10 posts to be able to put the pictures, so count this as 1 and a quick intro, I'll try to get some more up (without clogging stuff up too much) so I can get pictures up in due course.

Frame stamp (at the top of the seat tube) is N1279 - which I guess is either 1st Feb '79 or December '79?

Have had no mention of a "Bolley" yet so this will be a list addition once there are pix posted.
What you CAN do (before you reach the 10-post threshold) is to upload your pix into a gallery that's part of your user profile page.
Then anybody (that has over 10 posts) can copy and paste your pix into this thread.

I'm struggling to make the gallery thing work for me (I can see the pics I tried to upload to the thread in my first post, I can create a new album name, but I can't upload anything from my computer to it).

I was a bit bold and took the Alan sticker off the down tube today, so I can see the full 'burn' print of what was there before, not much more, it says 'Cycles Bolley'

I'm still wondering if it's connected to Serge Bolley, did he open a bike shop after retiring in 1972 perhaps?

the "gallery' or "album" thing is mysterious to me, but many get it to work...maybe some folks here more conversant with the technique can offer pointers ?

If you go to the gallery right after it is posted you can get to the album in the recent photos. I'm not able to get to it from the profile until after 10 post.

well "Rothchild" has just 2 more posts to go, so this will soon be moot for him, but I only see an "album" tab and no "gallery" tab when I look at most Newbie's profile pages, so that may explain things (or just add to my confusion)!

per the Waja for sale in Benelux happy to say Waja is already on "the list" at number 32

Hello again, sorry for the delay, I was riding a 200km brevet yesterday (9 of 12 for Randoneur Round the Year)

I've managed to get my post count up now, so hopefully with some pictures I can get some more insight on what I've got here and who 'Cycles Bolley' might have been (especially if they had a connection to Serge Bolley (https://www.procyclingstats.com/ride...nd-tour-starts)

Thanks for posting the above pix, could we also see a shot of the complete bicycle, including that fork (which appears to perhaps be chrome-plated steel, given the fork-end)?

Sure, here's how it came to me. I've been fettling today so it's now de-stickered completely, but it's not revealed much more, there was clearly some sort of design on the seattube, but it's just a repeat (without the lettering) of what's already been found on the downtube.

"Bolley" is now added to the list, thanks Rothchild!
Just to satisfy my suspicions: can you apply a magnet to the fork and see if it is steel (or confirm it's not)? That fork does not look like any of the "typical" ALAN Road Bicycle forks

In case of a Alan, 542490 does not mean a thing, at least, nobody knows.
Some years ago I did this comparative research.

Yup, very magnetic, definitely steel.

I may be getting round to servicing the headset at some point so hopefully I can find some more clues about the fork then.

My general suspicion is that this sat in a shed for a good period of time (with the sun on it on one side) and was pulled out at some point (potentially not all that long ago) it got a full referb (it's been done properly, insofar as there is a decent quantity of grease in the stem and seatpost etc) and that's when, for whatever reason, the forks got swapped.

The collection of finishing gear is close to what you might expect (assuming it was put together by a French LBS) with the spidel / simplex derailers, mavic hubs/rims and Atax stem (I know Simplex and Mavic were part of Spidel: https://www.disraeligears.co.uk/site...railleurs.html), but it also has suginio cranks (should perhaps be stronglight), a gipiemme seatpost and Galli brakes.

I'm still keen to hear anything about 'Cycles Bolley' they are otherwise entirely invisible on the internet, which given the number of bike enthusiasts seems somewhat odd!

Bikes: So many have come and gone… my first good bike was an Austrian-Daimler AD-SLE

I think I can add “Turin” to the list. Turin was the name of a shop with locations in Chicago and Denver that was importing high-end products before most other shops.

Turin now added to "list" as No. 59
interesting variation to the "World Champion" stripes colors: purple and orange?
