Saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan when in 7th grade.

So Beatles, The Who, Procol Harum and more recently Fountains of Wayne.

Also, a heartfelt RIP to Mr. Bowie. A big part of my musical education, for sure. The bands I played in BITD were almost exclusively original material, but somehow "Suffragette City" always managed sneak onto the set list. It just felt so damn good to play that song. A real house rocker. :)

Along with Beefheart, there was always Dave Thomas/Pere Ubu. For all displaced poets out there.

Non-Alignment Pact was as mainstream as it got.

Lost in the Ozone is one of my all time favorites. I recorded it on reel to reel to preserve the vinyl.

Here's one of those tunes where the famous cover is good, but the vintage original is better.

Kreist... just watched that Bowie video, Lazarus. Not sure I'm glad I did.
Spookiest and saddest video I've ever seen.
Whew.

Great band Mr. Giordano has. I think he's the last keeper of the big band music from the 1920's through 1940's. He used to play at Sophia's in Manhattan a few years ago. I met him, some of the band members and Sol Yaged there a few times. Sol used to play one or two songs on his clarinet most times. It was Monday nights, if I recall correctly. Then they got the bigger gigs playing for The Aviator movie and the Boardwalk Enpire TV series that you linked to above. My wife use to see them a lot of times at the nightclub. She also knew Mr Giordano's wife (she took the tickets at the bottom of the stairs). I remember his wife mentioning that Mr. Giordano didn't like flying very much. So she was the driver for the van for many road trips. :)

Your best vintage tune? Turn on the way-back machine Mr. Peabody!

I don't know a lot of these songs first hand but get the Peabody reference!

Through family marriage, some fun gathering and holiday with Jim P. Amazing talent and to think he wrote this one at 18. One of my sisters can jam as well on the piano. Name a song and if she's heard it before, can play it.... especially 60's-80's r&r. At one party, listening the two of them jamming was a hoot. I never tire of the classics.

Maybe you've heard this one. He played and co-wrote. Quite protective of it. I don't blame him for doing so. Checks all the right box's. Definite classic and crazy its still used in TV advertising, politicians campaigns.

I bought that record when I was 16 or so. It was cheap (five guilders, about two dollars at the time) and it looked great. I'd never heard of them, but a band with a name like that has got to be cool, right?

Turned out to be a very nice surprise. I didn't spare the vinyl. :)

This is incorrect. I have nothing to do with the excellent UK derailer site. From the copyright info at the bottom of his home page, credit appears due to one Michael Sweatman. I live in NYC. The fact we have in common is that we're both aware of and amused by story about the album title (related at the top of the site's home page).

I'd never read that G. Baker anecdote before. Great.

I'll pick a channel on Pandora like 'Blues Essentials' for some old-timey gritty blues...

I did not know that and stand corrected.
