The skirt part is wraparound, so it doesn't bunch up. It drapes across you thighs and keeps you well covered. You don't sit on the back of the skirt, instead it flows around you. There is an extra lycra triangle at the back of the waist for a little extra stretch. The shorts are well made - strong, stretchy, and a good durable weight with a flexible stretch chamois. The shorts alone are worth the price! When I got off the bike the skirt immediatley covers you up. I'm 5'2 and the skirt drops to my bottow of my knee cap (catholic school length!). Mine are Terry's Plus Skort, they also make them in regular sizes in two lengths. I bought the 3X which is a 22 - 24 size range and it is a very generous size. I think I may go for the 2X because I have sinched up the waist clasp to its smallest size (luckily, I can sew). I've worn them all week and they are now my favourite!

Cyclokitty... thanks so much for the info! I think I will get a skort!

THANK YOU *lol* for sharing this ... sometimes you have to hear things over and over, but it sinks in eventually... everyone starts *somewhere*. And, wherever that somewhere is is fine!

Thanks for the detailed info cyclokitty. I noticed the clothing links in these forums and had gone to the cites, but then hesitated because I wasn't sure of these kinds of details Now, with this information I feel more confident about ordering one (which I'm about to do)

I love this site!

Tom,

You have helped me transition into the BFs, offered useful suggestions, and given me kind words. Your presence adds to this thread and will continue to do so, imho. The thread would be less active if you were not contributing.

This was the first thread I'd subscribed to because I found it so amazing to be able to connect with similar others. Before this I'd assumed I was the only fat lady out there riding and felt isolated and a bit strange. The day I found this thread it was like .. "oh, yea .. wow - real people, like me" and when I am out on the bike, I *know* that and feel that much more comfortable riding. In fact, just knowing others like me are out on their bikes has allowed me to not even be embarassed anymore (at least due to being bigger). I don't feel like an oddball anymore, more like "normal"

This is a good thing.

I browse threads rather than subscribing, so that accounts for my usage pattern.

Mirysien, one thing that helps me is the range of people I see riding, particularly on my commute. It's very clear that there's no uniform and no one body type.

BTW, thanks to whoever posted the link to teamestrogen.com -- I got a jersey and a new pair of shorts from them, and I love them! Gonna get some more today!

Hello there GypsyAngel

It is the one and only crazylady. I heard you were asking about me and my posting. I do have a lot of things to catch up on. Thank You for asking about me. It got Tom off the computer long enough to let me do this.

Just kidding there.

Talk again soon.

Re the Terry wrap skort thingy -- I've worn one for a couple of years. Very comfy, and a nice alternative. But the front of the skirt does tend to flap around when you get some speed going, so I usually end up tucking the loose end into the cuff of my left leg. Not the prettiest, but less annoying!

Earlier I had posted about my lower back pain, and was offered some re-fitting suggestions. I have since been refitted at the LBS and got a shorter stem, moved the seat forward, and purchased a new saddle. So far my back feels pretty good, but I haven't yet had a long enough ride to really test it out. I'm still getting used to being much closer to the handlebars. Also, I'm having to relearn how to sit on my sit bones properly by tucking my butt under. Its a little awkward, but I imagine I'll adapt. The one thing that this new position really made clear was how weak my abs are -- time to get a stability ball and start doing some crunches, I guess!

Allow me to introduce myself...

Name: Kathy

Age: 47

Marital Status: Married forever with 2 grown kids.

Height/weight: 5'3 1/2", 205#.

What bike do you currently ride: Now myTrek Navigator 200, My husband just bought me a road bike off ebay for my birthday. I await it anxiously.

How long have you been riding?: I started riding regularly in March. And of course when I was a kid I bombed around the neighborhood on my bike all the time. Come to think of it, when I stopped doing that was when I started to gain weight!

Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: Yes, by cutting out most of the junk food and eating low fat, reducing calorie intake and kicking up the exercise to high gear. That's not working though and I'm going to have to resort to actual dieting, probably Weight Watchers.

What is your ultimate goal?: To be healthy into old age and not develop the familial Type II Diabetes. Also, I think eventually I'd enjoy doing a little touring.

How often do you ride and for how long?: I'm riding about 4-5 days a week now, usually an hour or two each ride. I'm trying to make a 100 mile week this week for the first time. Last week I made 90.

What is your favorite thing about riding?: I feel strong and healthy when I ride. I'm doing something good for myself and I'm actually enjoying it.

Marital Status: Not married

Height/weight: 5'8 1/2", 208#.

What bike do you currently ride: Rivendell Atlantis, Klein Stage Comp, Bridgestone 200, and an SR touring bike.

How long have you been riding?: In the 80's, I commuted by bike, In the 90's, I never touched a bike. 2001 I started riding short distances to exercise my dog on a 60-lb bike. Got my new bike June 2007. Accumulated 2 more since and dragged my old one out of the garage.

Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I'm doing nutrisystems, and I don't think it will work with all this exercise, because I'm starving.

What is your ultimate goal?: I'd like to do longer distances and explore on the bike, like to get to 140, which is a good weight for me when I'm muscled.

How often do you ride and for how long?: I'm building up slowly. I'm now up to about 10 miles/day, every day.

What is your favorite thing about riding?: Being on roads and trails I've never been on before.

I've said it before and I still wish some of you Athena's were closer! I'd love to ride with you!

I made a post over on the Clyde's forum, and thought I would add one here to:

Hi! I'm a 32 y.o. female living in the Detroit, MI, area. I'm married with two young children. I'm 5'8" and 375lbs. I've never learned to ride a bike. Probably about 5 years ago (and about 100 lbs ago), I first borrowed a friends bike to try to learn to ride. I was having fun with it and ended up buying a mountain bike from WalMart for myself. At one point I managed to actually "ride" for about 20 seconds. It was pretty exciting! I don't remember what stopped me from going out and trying again. I probably used the excuse of being busy with too much work and school.

My husband (Altinos) really enjoys riding and I would love to learn to ride so we can ride together. Seeing that there are other heavy people out there who can ride, and that there are products and equipment to make it easier and make us more comfortable is really promising.

I just wanted to introduce myself and just say that I'm really happy to have found a group of people who are in the same boat! I hope the Athena's thread here continues to become more active. I think women have some different challenges than men might (skorts for example!) and it really is nice to be able to share and learn from each other.

I've never worn bike clothes, so I'm skeptical. I finally ordered some, and they're due to arrive today. I've been putting off my ride, waiting for them, and now storms are moving in. I just find it hard to believe they'll be better then the ol' terry cloth bright orange (visible!) skort.

How long have you been riding?: I rode A LOT as a kid, and hope to get back on soon
Are you trying to lose weight?: I'm thinking about it. What I'm REALLY trying to do is love & enjoy my body regardless of it's shape.

Hi all! This morning I supported my best friend as she swam/ran/biked her 2nd triathlon. I was so proud of her that I cried. In the registration forms for other local upcoming triathlons I noticed something about Athenas (What? Fat women bike?!?!?) & had to google the term. I currently have no intentions of ever being a triathlete, but I thought I was simply too fat to even ride a bike -- finding you gals has made me very excited. We don't have a lot (<$200) to spend on a bike, so it's gonna take some searching on my part to find a good match to my height and weight. Any advice would be very appreciated!

BTW, Lil_Round_One -- I've struggled with infertility (5 years due to PCOS) as well & I wish you the best of luck!

What bike do you currently ride: Raleigh Venture 4.0
How long have you been riding?: 6/1/07, more or less
Are you currently trying to lose weight, and how are you going about it?: I'm not TRYING to lose weight, I'm GOING to lose weight! Calorie counting, biking, walking, and some swimming.
What is your ultimate goal?: To be under 200 lbs, strong, and fit. The much-hated charts say I should weigh 170, but.. hmm.. haven't seen that since I was about 12? Have to wait and see. I'm also thinking about doing triathlons, someday.
How often do you ride and for how long?: I ride 3-4-5 days a week, at least 5-6-7 miles each time (that distance is increasing pretty quickly). I try to ride, swim or walk every day.
What is your favorite thing about riding?: I'm starting to think of myself as an athlete!

Nice to meet everyone - I've been thinking about ordering from TeamEstrogen for some cooler-weather bike clothes (no point in buying summertime ones, they wont' fit next year). Glad to see they've fit others here.

Welcome! Sorry I didn't notice you newcomers sooner... the Athena area tends to be a little quiet, so I don't check it often.

Hey! Maybe we can change that!

Anyway, welcome.

Susan
