I'll join too.

So far I have ridden 66 miles in April. It's been a lovely month so far.

How about an hourly equivalent for us MTBers? I can get some 30 mile days in and i can get some 3 hour 8 mile days in. Usually the 8 mile days beat me up more than the 30 milers. I would enjoy being part of the group tracking effort, but I can't keep up with the miles riding on dirt. Pavement scares me, even those new bumbers leaves nasty marks.

What do you roadie types average in hours per month?

Well, 500 miles probably = 30 to 50 hours depending on the rider. Want to split the difference and call it 40 hours for the MTBers out there?

Trying to equate hours to miles is as pointless as trying to come up with a "value conversion" for trainer miles to Real Road (tm) miles.
A mile is a mile, no matter if you ride it on the road, on a trainer, on a spin bike or off road.

I know; the typical argument is that there are no headwinds or hills on a trainer, and that off road terrain is often more technical and difficult that road terrain. Regardless of these differences, a mile is a mile. I can choose to ride my 500 miles on the MUP or at the velodrome: They're outdoor miles, so I guess those are "real" miles... But is riding at the track or a dead-flat MUP really any more difficult than riding on rollers? What about compared to a spin bike with the resistance cranked way up?

Which weighs more: A pound of feathers or a pound of iron?

While each individual will determine what they want to include as miles, there are no rules.

Heck, no rules, no awards, no cash prizes.

The mileage goal should support your fitness and/or weight loss goals. Misrepresentations have not been an issue in the past. It's like playing solitaire, cheating is kind of pointless.

If you ever bring a bike to the Vegas area, PM me. WE can ride the MUP from Equestrian Park to the mouth of Bootleg Canyon. Then we can ride "Mother" "Dr. Kevorkian," or even "Girl Scout." Then I want to hear your speech about Mile = Mile. You'll be looking for several pounds of feathers, I'll just bet you will.

I'm guessing they're all very intense hill climbs?
I'll trade you: You bring a road bike up here to WA and we'll go ride the Alplet Plus.

I stand by my statement of a mile is a mile, and that you can't make a simple conversion of hours to miles just because the terrain isn't paved. If your aim is to do 500 miles in 1 month, nothing says they have to be the 500 most difficult miles you can find.

Its a DEAL, and yeah, what you say is true. But sometimes its fun to fall down a volcanic strewn hillside and get cut to pieces. It beats catching a tire in a storm drain and road rashing.

Maybe. Sorta.
I'll stick with 24% grade climbs on the pavement. At least if I go arse over teakettle, it's not because the road slipped out from under me.

133.69 mi - thru April 8th. Which is a pace for 501. Purely accident but thought it was funny it worked out that way.

I'm in. I've got 109 miles in April so far.

Where is November to March in all this? Ploughing through the snow/riding on ice sure is fun.

All right, then, I'm in. I've been averaging about 300 mi per month ( ~850 so far this year, but I missed about a month due to a crash, which bent my frame ) so far, so can work up to 500 mi so long as I won't get kicked out if I don't make it. That's a pretty aggressive goal.

I've got around 100 mi so far this month, but will be commuting by bike starting Monday. This challenge just means I'll still have to keep up my evening fun rides after I start doing it to get to and from work.

You qualify for the satisfaction of achieving a difficult goal. You then enjoy the health benefits (hint, hint).

I found that 45 to 50 mile rides, three days a week, works best for me.

The great benifit about the 500 mile/month goal is that you will make huge fitness gains. Easy, it is not.

So far, this thread is indeed motivating me. I want to get to 250 miles by the 15th. That's 80 more miles in the next four days. I think I can do it.

I don't know that I could do three 50-mile rides per week. I usually do 20-30 miles 4-5 days per week. I am thinking that if I have the time I want to do one 50-mile ride per week. The ride I did today was a new route that wasn't too bad. The only problem was that a large portion of it was on an MUP that was VERY CROWDED. It was almost as nerve-wracking as riding on a busy road.

Everyone finds their own pattern. Keeping with a 20-30 miles 4-5 days per week pattern should provide great results. It gets much easier after the first 1000 miles as long as the bike fits well and the rider is staying hydrated and properly fueled.
