Total-358(rounded)
I expect to break 400 with the four remaining days, just to say I have. I have come to find that I enjoy slower speed, long distance runs much more than I enjoy trying to go as fast as I can for 20 or so miles. I know at this time my "long distance" is a world different from what other enthusiasts here get in a days ride. I feel very proud of my accomplishment for a fellow with one foot who has been in bed more than out in the last four years, and who in that same time frame has gone from just under 300# to the 205# I weighed in at this morning.
Who knows....after the "season", I might even be able to go below Clyde again for the first time in 15+ years.

First frozen ride of the year, this morning. 31 degrees! It was exhilarating! However, it only cemented my view that the majority of cagers are absolute morons. Almost got run over several times by idiots who didn't scrape their frosted windows. Hey jerks, you can't see me if you can't see... anything! Jeez, it's a miracle that these people remember how to breathe every day.
Later on, I passed under both the I-90 and the I-190. Both were backed up with stand-still traffic. I laughed my frozen ass off. No doubt one of the unscraped cagers caused the backup when they ran into another car that they couldn't see.
I was worried that the colder temperatures would keep me off the bike. Well, I no longer worry about that. It was more fun than most of the bike rides I've been on all year!
The ride home was fun too. Warmer, but darker. My new headlight worked great, but requires me to keep looking straight forward the entire time. I looked left momentarily to check for traffic behind me, and it allowed some large "thing" to creep up on me without me noticing it, and I ran over "it". I have no idea what it was, some sort of road debris. Inspected the tires afterward and found no damage, so that was good, but it convinced me that if I'm going to continue night riding, I'm going to need a frame-mounted forward-looking flood light in addition to the head light. Ordered one up, and it'll be arriving soon! Yippie!
Also, my new Superflash rear light and Front Basket arrived. The rear light is good, much more noticeable than my old one. The basket is simultaneously uber dorky and uber awesome. I'm not going to install it quite yet (I only bought it because it was a $100 basket on sale for $20, couldn't pass it up), but next year when I begin transitioning to a car-light lifestyle, I'll be using it to do grocery shopping and running other errands.
Last night I stopped on over to the bike shop and dropped off the parts list for the new bike. They looked it over and helped me fill in the gaps, and gave me an estimate today. Looks like about $2k, which is cheaper than I expected. Tomorrow I'm heading over to get fitted. Oh boy I can't wait. This is going to be sweet!

And so it begins...
Decided to bike on over to the bike shop to get fitted for the new Trucker. Put down a downpayment, parts should be here in 2 weeks. No real hurry, I probably won't be riding it until spring. Maybe late winter. Ah hell, maybe in 3 weeks. Who knows.
My bike shop has a room dedicated to "Indoor racing" this winter. People go there and pay to use this expensive virtual racing indoor trainer, and there's this elaborate ranking system. It's pretty cool, but not for me (yet). There were a few people using it as I was getting fitted, and they finished and we all left at the same time. As I was prepping my bike to go on my way, one of them told me "You know, it's much warmer biking indoors...". I said "I know, but it's much funner biking outdoors!", and she looked at me like I was crazy. It was only 40 degrees out, but I was having fun. You start to question your own sanity a little when even other cyclists begin to think you cycle in bad conditions.
Realised I was only 5 miles away from the Big and Tall store, and that I needed to pick up some more winter clothes. Decided, why not bike there? And so I did. Had an interesting problem in that for the very first time ever, the only sizes available in one of the pants I wanted were too big! I may be moving down to the normal people store soonish. I hope. The clothes I ended up buying fit perfectly in my trunk bags' fold-out panniers, so the first non-commuting utility cycling ride was a success. It started raining so I got out my rain cover which protected the clothes. Near-freezing rain is not pretty, but I survived and managed to make it home safely. Only 61 miles away from 700 miles for the month. Tomorrow is looking like it'll be nice... so maybe I'll end up doing a metric and getting my very first 700 mile month? I dunno yet. I'm so close, but it'll be a very long time before I'm able to get anywhere near 700 miles in a single month again. We'll see.
In the long term, I began seriously thinking of going car-free lately. Todays utility ride proved to me that even on crappy days, running errands on a bike is perfectly doable. If I had installed my front basket, I could have done even more errands in this one trip. We'll see how I fare when winter rolls around, however. Something tells me I'll be singing a different tune when February throws 6 feet of snow onto the roads.

Couldn't resist. Absolutely gorgeous day out, so I decided to do my 4th metric and 12th 50+ ride of the year. Probably my last of the year as well. This ride was pretty ironic, actually. When I went down to Northern Virginia back in August, I met a cyclist there and we began talking. When he found out I was from Buffalo, he made a comment about how he wouldn't be able to stand the short cycling season up here. So here it is, October 30th, and I'm still cycling my merry butt off, and the news is saying most of Northern Virginia has no power and they just got hit by a major snowstorm. Short cycling season, indeed!
I was so close to 700 miles I decided to break that barrier. I realised I probably wasn't going to get this close to 700 miles until at least next September again. March/April are likely just going to be base mile months, learning how to ride clipless and getting accustomed to the new bike. May/June I'm going to spend doing entirely short-distance hills once I am comfortable with the clipless pedals, and July/August are going to be too hot to do any serious long distances regularly. So that leaves September/October, a whole year from now. So I forced myself to make that goal, just so I could say I did it. Hooray.

Just made it this month. Going away to see the ND-USC game last weekend along with this bizarre October snowstorm in the northeast almost took it away. I got out today after the roads cleared up and despite a flat 2 miles in along with a very tight schedule I got the miles in to hit 300:
10/1 22
10/2 11
10/4 15
10/6 15
10/7 10
10/8 11
10/9 25

10/20 11
10/24 35
10/26 15
10/28 11

So, do you count Spinning indoors on bad weather days? I'll admit, Spinning is harder than outdoor cycling...no coasting here!

I might ride today, but I'm not going to get a century in so that is probably about all I'm going to get this month. Oh well given that daylight hours are fading fast and I had two weekends taken up by helping family I don't feel too bad about it. If I just sat around all month that would be a different story.

Not safe for work
240 miles for October. Meh. I'll blame the rotten cold I had during the first week and a half of October that sucked the will to live out of me.
But here comes November!!!!!
