Ha. Just ask Will, Paisan or Ibohunt... I gave them snacks at the beginning of the ride. I might post the recipe when I get back. Traveling the next few days for work.

Keeping up with fuel and hydration was key and also watching my HR even though I have no learned how to use it like I should yet. It was my first time out with it. But I know not to go hard at the beginning because I will suffer later. I know I could have down the 100 yesterday. I felt great.

I did, I did. In one piece and very tired, and my Vernice dominators are barely scrapped. Gotta keep the patent leather collection looking shiny.

I know you guys missed me, I heard all about the hen clucking going on lol

I'll be there on the 19th. Not doing the canal deal, the little hills are short enough where it won't take a herculean effort.

If I get on the canal I usually ride from Sharpsburg to Williamsport or Brunswick then turn back to Sharpsburg. I don't play well on the Canal since they have a 15 mph speed limit.

Paisan just wreched my arm to do the French Creek Iron tour Century (100 miles 6600') June 10th as a warm up for the Garrett Co Metric (63 miles 8000') June 23rd.
Nothing like climbing an average of 126' per mile :-O

Oh they happened. Good thing he didn't bring more or I could have got fat(ter) on an 80 mile ride.
My HRM says I didn't burn that many calories. I probably did gain yesterday

It was 80+ miles of "Cat" stories
One of the better ones....You hit the gate and then it hit you back.
Missed a $10,000 opportunity without a video camera for that one.

Yes but don't forget the best part, she hit the gate, crashed, broke her thumb and still rode 50 miles with me, Will and Sayre.
Tough as nails that one.

I'm doing the canal since I'm recovering from major surgery and a blood clot in the lungs. I have to crawl before I can climb. Even the rollers of Shephardstown are too much for me and my new knees. Besides there are lots of soft things to land on along the C & O.

I was a volunteer for the French Creek Iron Tour in 2010. Biggest complaint riders had about the century route was that the worst of the climbing was backloaded into the final segment. Not having ridden it, I don't know if that was true or not. In 2010 we had a lot of riders SAGging:

Toughest rider on the century route:

BTW, one small piece of trivia.... the actor Kevin Bacon in his youth spent his summers in the Phoenixville area, riding his bike over some of the roads you will ride. Mr. Bacon fundraises for the sponsors of the French Creek Iron Tour, The French and Pickering Creek Conservation Trust. His brother still lives nearby.

IBOHUNT, want a challenge? Come down to NC in June and do the Blood, Sweat And Gears Century with me. 100 miles and almost 14,000 ft climbing, it is, er, strenuous .

Perhaps if I hadn't already signed up for these two in June I'd join you.
I look for climbs (yeah, I must have hit my head) because I suck at them. My mantra is... practice what you suck at. No use practicing what you are already good at eh?

My Grandfather was from Valle Crucis. I wish I knew exactly where.
If I ever had to move from here that's on my short list of places I'd like to move to.

Thanks for the pointer. Ride is bookmarked for next year.

Valle Crucis is a lovely part of the world and great biking country! We have plenty of other rides like that down here. You may want to look at the Assault on Mt. Mitchell, the Bridge to Bridge, the Hurt, Pain and Agony and the Grizzly amongst many others. Hills we got and plenty!!

I did Bridge to Bridge years ago. What a GREAT Ride!! I'd be interested in doing that again this year if it still falls late in the year like it used to. Right now my big goal for the year is the mountain mama which has 13k ft of climbing over 100 miles. Everything between now and then(Aug 4th) is geared towards building for that.

I have a century coming up in May with a few other BF posters, and then looking at a possible second one later in May. June is going to be particularly tough. IBOHUNT and I are doing 1 metric w 8k ft of climbing and 1 century w /6k ft of climbing 2 weeks apart from each other but July is wide open. Do any of those other rides happen in July?

Bridge to Bridge is Sept 23rd. The Roan Moan century is in July. Here's a link to other organized rides in the area. I do quite a lot of them so let me know if you sign up.

Thanks for the link. I've bookmarked it. Too bad the Grizzly was canceled. I might could have come to that. Looking at the Moan with 1 each CAT 1,2,4 and 7 CAT 5's.
It's late July so if I don't find anything closer I might just pop on down.

Biking stops in Sept and doesn't start again till Dec due to bow season.
Sorry, a man has to eat you know.

Never done the Moan but heard its a good ride, will probably sign up for it.

The Grizzly was a great ride and very tough. The Cat 1 climb over Beech Mtn is a brute, try it and you'll know why it was one of Lance Armstrong's favorite training routes. I imagine they cancelled the ride because of the death of a cyclist who lost control during a descent last year, I was on the ride and passed him, a very sad day.
