I had a rental car, dropped off my sister and drove 20 m, and then it stopped in the middle of the road, as she had the proximity key on a chain around her neck. It could be pretty dangerous.

I found a nice carabiner on the ground while riding.

We recently got a minivan that has keyless start, I don't know if you'd call it a proximity key because it doesn't automatically unlock the doors when you get near, but I have determined that (a) the car obviously will not start if the key is not proximate, but (b) if you start the car, then a person leaves the car with the key, you can drive away at least 100m and the car doesn't shut down. I didn't test it further than that.

I never see anything interesting on the ground while riding. I guess due to the sheer volume of the people, it's kept clean and anything interesting is taken immediately :/

Today there were about 50 little black hairbands on the ground.

Found this on the MUP. Didn't see anyone in the vicinity. I'm assuming it got lifted and ridden to where the thief wanted to go, then abandoned. I posted a picture on our local bicycle group page in case someone is looking for it.

My badge from work which I had dropped only a mile-ish into my 11-mile commute. I was stunned when I backtracked later in the day and there it was just sitting there off to the side of the trail.

And a wallet a few years back...called the owner and she came and met me.

Baby turtle trying to get back to lake. I stopped and got it just in time before it would have been run over and returned it to the lake. Felt good the rest of the ride and love seeing the turtles sunning around the lake during my rides.

Was riding down a pretty busy street this morning turning left when I looked down and saw a phone laying face down in the turning lane. I made the left turn, then parked my bike and ran back out in the street dodging traffic to retrieve it. When I picked it up and turned it over I could see that it was pretty much destroyed. At that point though, I decided that just dropping it back in the street would be littering so I stuck it in my pocket.

When I got to work I pulled out the SIM and saw it was a Verizon phone. I think later on I'll drop it off at a Verizon store. Maybe they have the serial number on file and can contact the owner, and maybe the owner has a damage replacement plan.

Bikes: A touring bike and a hybrid

Several pairs of gloves, couple nice hoodies, a spring clamp, couple ball caps, iPhone that I was able to reply to a received text through the lock screen and return to the owner, a wire brush - there are several silver coins that I pass on my commute but never care to stop and pick them up. I have their locations memorized and see them every morning (well, up until the snow covered them). I guess it's good to know if I ever go completely broke I can go on a bike ride and retrieve about $.40. I wish I'd find more pens. I once met the grandfather of a friend who before he died had amassed an enormous collection of writing utensils from his daily bike rides around town. Our daughter, the budding artist, is always using then losing our pens.

Other day I found a Craftsman 7/16" socket driver with a universal joint head. This pup is 14" long, and appears to be indestructible as you'd expect of a Craftsman tool.

I wonder if I have any sockets to fit it... not likely.

Once on a walk down the bike path we found the tools someone left when they took off in a hurry after stealing a bike so we decided to mess their plans up took the wrench and tossed it under a bridge on the side you cant get down easily come spring im going to take a look for it lol. More recently on a ride i found my lost subway the bag holding it split at some point when i put the bike lock in it and i never noticed until i was a block from home so i ended up backtracking 4 times in a row and out of the missing lock and 3 footlong subs only found 2 mine were missing . Also found a longboard someone ditched on the side of the path while they went exploring apparently took it with me intending to sell it if no one was looking for it only after 10 minutes or so of being in the mall and the time it took to get to the end of the path(20 mins walking) they was some teenagers saying it was their board and being rude about it.

About a third of my own laundry on the way back from the laundromat. I hate what passes for laundry bags.

That reminds me; yesterday morning on the way to church in the car with the family, I saw a wrench on the side of the road that I forgot to look for this morning on my way to work. Looked like approx 15mm combo wrench, and you can never have too many of those (when you are lead assembler for your work's annual Bike Drive for military kids)

Local pawn shop has trays full of used wrenches, usually for $1 each, and I tend to get my change in 15mm wrenches; figure out in my head what will round my purchase up close to the next $10, and grab that many before I head to the register. Between seriously seized pedals ruining them and just always sticking one in my pocket before checking anything more than two steps from the bench, we tend to go through a lot.

Keep thinking we need to stock up on cheap brand new 15, 17 and maybe 9-10mm from somewhere and offer them for a couple bucks each. Maybe a roadside kit with a 15 and 17mm wrench, 5 and 6mm hex keys, a combo screwdriver and a set of tire levers. Too many of the cheap kits have near useless wrenches that won't hold up to a tight axle nut.

I've never bought a bungee cord, no need. The last one I found about a month ago was brand new with the tag still attached. I've gotten picky about tools, it has to be real nice for me to bother keeping it.

This is my latest tool acquisition (I actually paid for it), I love it. I put masking tape on the handle and wrote 'LOOSE' in blue sharpie on one side and 'TIGHT' on the other, just black on the off-white tape (Blue=loose, white=tight). (That's as helpful as the post on the tips&tricks stickie that suggested marking the base of the 5mm on your Park AWS-1 with tape, to help you navigate it quicker.)

This baby was very helpful for our team of volunteers that had to put together about 150 Huffys, about 50 of them were cruisers with seats that needed lots of 15mm cranking to secure onto their seatposts. A regular socket didn't fit in there, and a regular wrench took too long with all the removing and replacing. The nuts needed seriously like 5 full revolutions each, and could not be done by finger.

2 bike tire levers, made in England. Left them in what I thought was a visible spot and several days later after no one picked them up I took them home.

A Christmas tree, covering half the bike path. I don't know if left there deliberately or if it just rolled out of someone's truck bed, but it would have been hard to land the way it did accidentally. Still had the fake icicles on it.

Best thing so far -- $500 cash. Second best thing, $100 cash. But I've also found things that destroyed my wheels and led to a 10 mile walk.
