How much should I be paying for 2009 Specialized Tricross Comp???
Hello all, Ive recentlty come across a 2009 Specialized Triross Comp (brand new) for 40% off the sticker price of $2,200. My question is, for a 6 year old bike, is the $1,320 price tag fair?
Some info about me. This is my first bike in about a 7 year hiatus from biking. I used to ride a Trek Shift ($380), a GIANT Alondra MTB (90's) and a Trek 830 MTB. I originally sought out a bike with NO front suspension as the Trek Shift got on my nerves because when I pedaled, most of the energy went into the shock. Furthermore, that bike was just not fast enough for me. I used to ride pretty decent distances on my Trek 830, usually greater than 30 miles per trip.
So that lead me to looking into the Trek FX 7.4 and the Specialized Sirrus Comp Disc. I rode both bikes at two different LBS and liked the Trek better. Then stumbled upon this site and learned of cyclocross bikes. Learned about the Trek and Specialized equivalents and went to the LBS to try those. I fell in love with the Tricross immediately and really didn't like the Trek because it felt uncomfortable. So that led me to seriously considering plunking down the cash for the Tricross. I just really want to make sure I'm not overpaying for it.

Would you buy a 7 year old "new" laptop for 40% off the original list price? Probably not. Bikes don't go through quite as rapid a change each year as computers, but you need to compare to similar 2016 bikes and see what they cost. Off the top of my head, the price still sounds a bit high. If you like the bike and can get it for for around $800, I'd say go for it. BTW, model year 2009 bikes were sold in 2008, so it's a 7 year old bike. 105 components from 2009 are not comparable to today's 105 components.

Bikes don't go through quite as rapid a change each year as computers, but you need to compare to similar 2016 bikes and see what they cost. Off the top of my head, the price still sounds a bit high. If you like the bike and can get it for for around $800, I'd say go for it. BTW, model year 2009 bikes were sold in 2008, so it's a 7 year old bike. 105 components from 2009 are not comparable to today's 105 components.

It looks like the Tricross was discontinued, maybe in 2014.

Keep in mind your bike has linear pull brakes. Most equivalent bikes have moved to discs.
That is also a 10s, which would make it equivalent to a Tiagra based bike, I think.
I snagged the basic version of the 2011 Tricross for $200... plus a bit of maintenance. 8s, I think. If I wanted, I cold upgrade it to new 11s Ultegra, and probably save some on what you're paying for the 2009 bike.
Mine was rated at just over $1000 new.

Thanks! I just looked at the AWOL, the Diverge Elite A1, and the Crux E5. Of thiose three, I like the Diverge best. However, the Diverge is using Tiagra. I'm not sure how they compare to the 2009 Tricross 105. If the Bike shop will come down to at least $1,000, I think I will still purchase the 09'.

To me, it sounds like a good deal. However, you are getting old bicycle "technology." It's not bad technology, but there have been improvements. Unless I was racing (this is the commuting forum) I don't think I would be buying a bicycle today without good disc brakes... mechanical or hydraulic. My rim brakes are fine on my carbon fiber synapse... it rarely gets ridden in the rain. However, my cantilever brakes on my touring bike have been a disappointment. I've tried different brakes, pads, all kinds of adjustments... they just don't do it for me in wet conditions. They are "satisfactory" in dry conditions. I'm trying to modify the steel frame to accept disc brakes.
The tri-cross is a good bike. You're several years behind in developments... but, for a commuter, I'm sure it would still be excellent. You just don't want to be craving something that is available today that wasn't in 2009.

Yes, this is why I am thinking about the Diverge Elite A1. I do not plan on racing whichever bike I get at all. I do plan on riding vey long distances though. Thats what brings me back to the Tricross; when I test rode it, it was just so darn comfortable. I could see me easily riding that bike all day long. The cantilever brakes were my only gripe with the tricross. I fidgured I could swap them out for mini v's. I think I'll go try the Diverge tomorrow and make my decision based on that. If its just as comfortable, I may switch to that despite the lesser grade Shimano groupset.

What are your goals? On road? Off road? Gravel?
Why a Tricross vs a road bike?
Are you looking at other road bikes? For Specialized, perhaps the Roubaix? Or, perhaps some older road bikes?

There is nothing wrong with 2009 bike technology, and apart from disc brakes not much has changed of significance. I'm quite happy with even older technology. I am also a fan of canti brakes. I like to use Koolstop Salmon pads and have yet to have trouble stopping.
Also looks like it has a mix of 105 and ultegra. It might be doubtful the shop will come down more, but you could try for other deals in locks, lights, clothing, rack etc. At that price, they are probably looking at selling it for wholesale or just over to cover the cost of shipping.

Mostly city, urban, boardwalk riding (I live in Southern NJ). I also plan on doing some very tame trails every now and then with my MTB buds (nothing a Tricross couldn't handle). So that ruled out a pure road bike for me. If I'm not mistaken, the roubiax only takes up to 30c tires? Whereas the Tricross can go much bigger.
