Sidewalk!

I was told today by a not so bright driver of automobile that I should "GET ON THE SIDEWALK!"
How would you react to something like this. I showed him who was #1.

I just disregard or yell "I will if you will". Most of the time there really isn't even a sidewalk or you can't see it very well.

Just keep cycling!

this isn't orginal but it works, if somebody honks at you, slow and wave like mad, like you just seen your best friend, this confuses them, at the very least you'll get a kick
out of their sour puss faces. Now when someone shouts maddening things at you
like "get on the sidewalk" or "get of the road" peer into their auto and affect a big
cheesy accent and tell them "you really love america but your english is no good"
that confuses them even more.

Hahahaha, I like your style.

I don't usually react to pretty much anything said to me from cages nowadays, I just don't care and I find that it doesn't affect me in the slightest. Either my brain makes more endorphins or I have grown thicker skin over time, either way I just enjoy the ride..... It wasn't always that way tho, I used to be quite agressive once. My usual reply to anything used to be along the lines of "pull the f**k over so I can kick your f***ing head in, you f***ing....... etc. etc." delivered at the top of my lungs... yep, I was young and stoopid once.

I carry a set of motorist/cyclist "safety message" cards (4 cards from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety) in my panniers. Card #1 says that bikes are vehicles and are to be ridden in the road and are not allowed on the sidewalk.
End of discussion!

I cross onto the sidewalk if it's safer or more convenient (say, for passing a long line of cars that are too close to the curb). What can I say? I like living in both worlds, car and ped.

I have no problem using the sidewalk when necessary... However I normally dismount and just walk my bike. I don't like riding it on the sidewalk because I believe we deserve our "right" to the road. It just shows you the power of the bike since there can be a bunch of vehicles stuck in traffic and I can just dismount and walk my bike on the sidewalk. I then remount in a better location and ride on! I just love to stare at the people stuck in their metal boxes!

Another time there was a road that was blocked due to construction. I just crossed the road and walked my bike along the sidewalk. Motorists had to make a right and find another route! I just walked past the area and got back on the road! :0) Viva la bike!

Think outside the box! Ride a Bike!

Keep Cycling,

Bikes: Gary Fisher MTB, junker Univega fixed.

I sometimes ride on the sidewalks in front of the "stripmall Hell" part of my commute. Because it's sketchy, and I see maybe 1 pedestrian a week using them, if I'm lucky.

IMHO Most of the danger of sidewalks doesn't seem to come from pedestrians. Usually, it seems to be intersections and driveway crossings.

Bikes: Ritchey P-series prototype, Diamondback, Nishiki Triathelon Pro.

Bunny hop onto the sidewalk then kick off back onto the road.

Then ride with no hands while pulling 3 feet of chain and lock out of my backpack.

I've heard the exact same comment on more than one occasion. Usually I just ignore it (the same way I ignore all of the other ignorant things that motorists say and do). If they're stopped and have their window down or are in some other situation where I think they might actually hear me I'll yell "no thanks". It just doesn't pay to get wound-up about these things.

I just wave. It's humiliating if they suddenly get stuck in traffic about 1/2 km down the road.

Confrontations are not worth it, especially in places where people can carry guns.

I tell them to tell it to the cops. If they don't mind me on the sidewalks, I wouldn't either.

I wear hearing aids and most drivers pass so fast I only hear 1 or 2 words. I know when they are mad and just smile and wave. Those that go slow enough to hear "get on the sidewalk", I tell them it's against the law. I worry about those that come up behind and act like they would like to bump me. I do not give way though. The law says I have as much right to the road as they do.

Half my commute is 2 lanes each direction. I take the outside lane right down the center grease strip. If I give any more room they will try to get between me and the line. I have had an ambulance company pull up behind me in the outside lane twice and touch their siren. If they are on a run they should be in the passing lane with sirens blazing. I just kept going. Next one that does this I will stop in the middle of the road, take his number and report him to the police. Their base is on my route and I will go back to it and file a complaint. They do not get a third time.
