I wasn't feeling so well when I woke up, so I planned to either wake up my son for a ride into work or just take the bus. Then I remembered that there is construction, starting today for the next 3 weeks, on the road going to my office building that will require a 2km detour around it and down from 2 lanes to 1 lane for part of it so I decided that cycling in would be best because I could pass the lineup of cars on the paved shoulder, although I would still have to go the same additional distance as them. In the end, not all of the setup for the construction had been completed so although the detour was in effect, there were still 2 lanes.
Mild, 15C/59F, partly cloudy but strong breeze. |
High humidity and high dew point days are here for a while. Pretty sticky coming in.
Yesterday evening I decided to go out for a quick fun ride. Just 16 miles, but it felt nice to ride sans-commuting stuff. I turned north on one road and discovered a nice tail wind. I had already battled the head wind and this was taking me home. I hit 24.5mph for one mile and 21+ for the next two miles! Wheee! |
It's cooled off quite a bit, barely 60F this morning with threats of rain throughout the week.
|
Pleasant ride in on the fixie, sunny, cool, slight breeze. Looks like a nice week ahead. Hoping to break the trend of only bike-commuting once a week. Totally missed last week due to travel.
|
Hot today with the sun pounding down and no cloud coverage at all, but at least with some wind. Looking forward to the predicted thunderstorms for the the rest of the week to cool things down.
|
I'm sitting it out this week. That includes my idea of walking to work on the solstice. The forecast is 107-110F all week, peaking each day right around home time. I don't even want to try to ride in and back out at lunch, it's 90F already before 9:30
|
A very pleasant uneventful commute this am. Though I could not find my rear light. I have been having issues with it staying attached to the bike since I bought it a few weeks ago. I rode without a rear light. I felt uncomfortable with out it. I found it in my bike bag at work after taking a shower. I need to find a way to make it stay attached.
|
No ride this morning, tropical storm weather is predicted to start today/later this afternoon and I'm not riding in 30-40mph gusts :). Mid-90s for the ride home yesterday and the home stretch doesn't have much shade, so I overheated during the last 5 miles. But, no cramps (thanks, Nuun), no mechanical issues, and nothing lodged in my eye (all problems from last week)! Success!

A good ride this morning. Warm and humid, but the high is only supposed to be 80F somehow. No major rain forecast, but I guess it will be cloudy enough to keep it cooler.
I stopped to take this photo on the way in. Just a creek running higher than normal due to recent rains. https://scontent.cdninstagram.com/t5...89805056_n.jpg |

The opposite here - almost chilly this morning, under 60. Yesterday evening the winds were horrendous - like bending trees windy. Oddly enough I really didn't feel it because mostly a crosswind from the west which for me is mostly blocked by stuff. |
Upper 60's this morning.. no complaints! Easier ride than expected since I gave blood yesterday. That ride last night was a bit difficult though!

Feeling a bit under the weather for the past two days, had to skip commuting by bike :(
I don't like that. |
Haven't bike commuted in...10 years?
Today I changed that. Drove down to a park on the riverside MUP and commuted the 6 and a half miles from there. I used a hard tail Haro mountain bike, only commuter mod is a front handlebar bag; still on knobbies. I'd like to have something more upright and with less rolling resistance (and fenders!) but for now this will be ok. If I do it much more I'll either mod the bike or get something different. |

^ Yikes! 106F today and 108F tomorrow in Sacramento.
https://www.wunderground.com/q/zmw:94203.1.99999 Yeah, I'd probably throw in the towel after 100F as well. It was an oven the last time riding in 96F here last week. At least the humidity was low? I rode from home today. Should be nice weather. But my backside says that I need some cream on it. :( |
Good one today. First real warm one. Road the fast bike today. I guess you could call it vintage maybe. It is a 2004 frame. I love my steel Davidson, but also love this Alu and carbon Merckx. Strong, quiet, and fast. Fun for light days where I only have a pack. :) Did my normal commute along the rails to trails path and Big Wood River today. Not too windy.

Wunderground said 119.9 F 8% humidity when I left work. So yeah, dry heat. I wasn't the only cyclist out there either.

Excellent ... heatwave today (almost +30C) ... stopped by the beach for a swim and an ice cream ... showered and went into work.

Nice quiet ride in, coolish temperatures at 10C/50F, but sunny and little to no breeze.
This week, there's been construction on the road leading up to my office building on the university property so there is a 2km detour to another entrance to the university. It wasn't so bad on Monday as the construction crew was just getting setup but yesterday, the cars were backed up for 2km and I had some things to do early in the morning and was depending on my son to drive me in. We got in the line and slowly moved forward when I decided to get out and walk the rest of the way and he turned around and went back home. Other coworkers told me that they're seriously thinking of biking in for at least the 3 schedule weeks of construction. The indoor bike cage holds only 5 bikes, after I came back from my shower, there were 6 bikes in there, the last was leaning up against the wall, I wonder how many others will be there now. |

Welcome back! Yea, it doesn't take long to justify a need for a new bike. :)
Rode in again today. It was sprinkling when I left the house, but cleared up when I parked at the MUP trailhead. Saw a whole bunch of rabbits, a couple yellow finches, and two deer, a doe and a spike horned buck. He kept on leading me out for about quarter mile, and then finally dove into the hedgerow between the path and the Hudson. There was a guy on a vintage fendered drop bar commuter that passed me up just past that, he commented on the deer's passage. If I get a different bike, it'll be well used. A local guy just listed a 90's Rockhopper for $200, it's 17.5" though, maybe too small for me...I'm 6'. My mental image is that I want something steel with a triple, solid fork and v brakes or cantis, that I can outfit with a rear and front rack, some lights, middling city tires and a trekking bar. |
I had a good ride. Some early morning rains left the roads wet, but not bad. I felt a few rain drops near the end of the ride. Maybe some more throughout the day, but who knows about 5 o'clock.

Came out today to squishy tire. Instead of my normal lazy routine which would be to pump it up and hope for the best I actually changed the tube. It's too damn nice out to worry about flats. |
